The last 747 rolled out on December 6th (747-8F N863GT for Atlas Air), ending 54 years of production of one of the most successful aircraft in the world
To think this basically started with a handshake and a promise between two friends on a fishing trip is the true testament to the integrity of people from that era.
I was a year old in 1968 when this aircraft was rolled out, now I have a diecast model of this from Inflight200 which arrived this past Thursday. I love the model & I'm glad I finally decided to buy one.
Tje 747 has been the best and the greatest of all times despite any other A380 or the latest 787. It was the first heavy built in the late 60's and will be forever.
I was there with Louie Weathers, sitting in his new GTO on the freeway to watch this Monster Jet take it's first flight. I had just got out of the Army a month before and Louie helped me get a temporary Long Shoreman job on pier 47, we were having a ball for three months. We were listening to the radio driving around and heard the live report and got to the view area from the road looking down on the runway. I looked like it was flying about 80 MPH because it was so Big, and so Loud!
50 years of the first flight of the Boeing 747!!! February 9, 1969 made the first flight of the Boeing 747-100 (initial model of the series "747") - the world's first long-haul double-deck wide-body passenger aircraft.
I saw this plane in 1969 Palm Springs........they were doing the warm weather testing there because Acapulco was too cold. What a sight to see when that whale came around the pattern......it was impressive then and still is now..........
