The 2024 Whanganui Street Drags Meet 'The Rivercity Express'

The annual Whanganui Road Rodders Street Drags was held on Taupo Quay beside the rail yard on Sunday 25th February. The event was booked on the same day as a railway excursion was scheduled to come into town.
This was the 37th edition of Whanganui’s street drags and 70 competitors had registered to participate in the event. There are only two other such car races in the New Zealand.
The Rivercity Express was operated by Steam Incorporated Paekākāriki and brought up passengers from the Wellington and Manawatu regions. The train stopped at East Town to set down passengers to board busses bound for a ride on PS Waimarie on the Whanganui River. Other passengers remained onboard and were brought into downtown Whanganui to explore the heritage precent. The train had to stop near the Taupo Quay crossing to meet the busses there, as access to the railyard entrance was restricted by the road closure of Taupo Quay.

Yes, myself & Zane have watched your video not long after it was uploaded. We noted your location. I had given thought to that Cobham Bridge vantage point on the day, but realised it was going to be hard to get from the bridge to the table in the short amount of time given.
