    Hi Joey and Xena, thanks for another great video. Joey, you mentioned a floor crane in the Hoe Shack. The only thing with them is that you really need a clear floor to move it around. Personally I’d get a bit animated and my language colourful before long. It looks like you have insulation and power preventing access to the container itself. A monorail like you previously reported on in the old cat tank shed wouldn’t work. If you had enough head height under the ceiling, a full width gantry supported by vertical posts against the walls right to the floor to suit maybe up to 600 kg would completely remove the need to keep moving stuff around that’s on the floor. It could hang down a bit if you always parked it at the back of the shack, you’d have to duck when using it though. Your lighting might need to be reconfigured perhaps to thin profile light panels. Anyway just throwing around ideas. Keep on keeping on 😊.

    Just for learning purposes: a small block chevy “3/4” race cam has a lift between.480 to .500. It was a generic term back then, “ full race” was over .500 lift. (I googled specs) PS if you install a cam that is nearing .500 lift , you should check valve spring pressures. Probably pushing the limits on stock stuff.

      I can tell you from experience, if you are dealing with a low compression '70's small block with stock, large chamber heads, putting any kind of a "big: cam" in will kill some low end torque, and the heads/intake etc will "run out of breath" before it can pull the RPM's the cam is intended to do. NOW what I did to overcome that? Put some 58cc chamber 305 heads on, sure I lost valve size and port volume, BUT I took it from 8.5;1 to 10:1 (measured and calculated) went from a 14:12 @ 96 to a 13:22 @ 103.9 in a 3200 lb S10. With an overdrive and 3.73 gears, drove four hours to the track, swapped the slicks on, beat on it all day, and drove 'er home.

    Two things for easy lazy mans basic tuning; The spring on the primary jets & the primary jet & rod size. The spring is based on vacuum the motor produces and the timing with relation to that vacuum of the rods getting pulled out of the jets. If you have a fine scale I would do nothing more than measure compression tension to whatever height feels right to you to document what you currently have to see what differences you have between each carb (there is a correct way, can't remember what it is though). Document jets, primary rods and secondary rods. I've never had much issue just blindly mixing and matching qjets, however I've had mostly mid 70's qjets in my collection that came out of 3/4 ton trucks and van the newest has been an 83 before it really got hit by the smog era nonsense but still needed a bit of hot rodding on the secondaries to wake it up--even with a cam, I did not change the spring on the primary rod hanger or change primary jets. It started life on a 305, ended up on a 350 with a mild cam (460" lift).
    At 21m16s, that clear line you have connecting vacuum ports; I wouldn't do that. If you are mixing a manifold vacuum source and a ported vacuum source the carb won't be happy. Also so you know, just because the port is in the same place on a carb doesn't mean it is the same type of vacuum. Always check before hooking stuff up, especially if you have wildly different year carbs. But I've got two in the garage same year, different vacuum/manifold port configuration.
    Secondary tweaking we can get to later, but since you are not ripping down the highway doesn't matter much (or are you?), the secondaries won't be opening tooling around the kingdom.
    Those dual jets you want to give away, don't yet. They are the front half of a quadrajet; more primary jets! And hanger springs.

      @@kingofobsolete4789 Just sharing the info. And as long as I remember everything right... =-)
      Something you can do right now, tap on the secondary air door of all your qjets. That way you get a feel for how much tension they have right now to your finger. I adjust them by their feel, again, not by the book, but it works for me. Used to spend hours on a back road tweaking and running to get things where I wanted them. If they are stock, they are going to be tough to open. Also see if your blades open freely or "stuck"--which can happen if the case deforms from overtightening the back two screws, as you probably noticed years ago theres nothing under the back to support it. If it is jammed take a half round file to the carb body and shave just enough off so it doesn't stick. Dont try to bend it back to shape or you will have multiple pieces in your hand and a paper weight. If you do have a bent top case just mind it closely when installing it if you see it deforming, back offf a hair and resist the temptation to tighten it again.
      While you got them apart, get rid of the little lock off lever on the secondary shaft (passenger side of carb, sits on a boss with a couple keys 180 degree apart. You warm up your vehicles, and are smart enough not to lay into it cold so no need to have a potential lockout when you want to hammer it if the chock decides it wants to close a bit.

    • @alexb.1320
      @alexb.1320 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh yeah, and check the numbers on the dual jets, primary rods are different lengths on the carbs starting with 170, that you do not want to mix n match--I always kept hangers with the specific carb so never much cared to know more about it. Jets are still the same. The springs will interchange.

    if you're increasing the airflow in an engine with a bigger camshaft, you will have to either fatten the idle mixture or put bigger jets or thinner metering rods to fatten the fuel mixture to make it run better with the bigger cam. A basic stock quadrajet will run an engine that has a RV camshaft without any major work or adjustments. Other than myself, I don't know anyone in my generation who knows how to work on the Rochester Quadrajet carburetors.

    • @kingofobsolete4789
      @kingofobsolete4789  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    King, Those adjustments you're referring to require drilling out channels and orifices. That means they are forever modified/ permanent. And it's not even an exact science. I knew 2 carb shops who did it and they got $125/ hour back in the late 60's when carbs were laying around everywhere. (so if they scrapped one they just tossed it into a pile for parts) It's not for the faint of heart. Might be better to advance the cam timing a few degrees or go to straight intake manifold vacuum for the distributer vacuum advance to pull the timing up as soon as there is any vacuum. Diddling with vacuum advance is not going to change top end performance, because there is almost no vacuum at WOT. I've done the switch to straight manifold vacuum many a time with great success. In fact now that I think about it, if I were you I'd try that first thing. Just put the hose on any nipple with man/vac.
    .
    Another thing, I am of the opinion that a little air in the see thru inline fuel filter is normal. It may disappear someday, but as long as the level of fuel is up to the outlet, you're getting full fuel. If you reposition it more vertical so the bubble goes out the outlet it'll be gone. But it doesn't hurt anything, it's just trapped air. Now, FYI: Those other carbs, like the 2-G's, are about a dime a dozen here in the states. They came on everything up til about 1979. GM kept using them on boats for a while after that, but In 1980, GM vehicles for California went electronic . How do I know? I was there at GM in emissions when Calif Air Resources Board proposed rules called for electronic A/F control in 1979. That was the beginning of "Closed-Loop" fuel control. By 1981 the 2-G, name was gone. The electronic version was then called DJ2-E2SE and it went across the U.S. Lastly if those old carbs are pristine, someone may want them. OK FB, ben/ michigan

The Edlebrock haters, the Q jet haters, they are all the same. Easy to bash what you don't understand. Is it an ideal drag racing carb? No! But is it a great all around carb for street use that gets good part throttle fuel economy with the small primaries, but rips when opened up? YES!
