John’s vocals are superb , but it’s Paul’s backing harmonies that tip this over into magnificent. If anyone asks “ So just what WAS this group all about ??”, play this.

John knew the force of Paul’s voice and matched it when they sang together.....you can hear the intensity rise when they sing together.......so awesome.....
John's voice will forever be treasured, but Paul's skill as a back vocal will always be my favorite!!! my mom always say that another way to spot a very good singer is through one's talent to harmonize or blend to the main singer.. i know John and George can do that too but yeah Paul is on the top of my list ❤❤❤ i have this very big amazement to all singers who do second/back vocals it makes every song more colorful
I prefer Lennon's voice, but I must agree with you. McCartney was the best harmonizer in the band. I loved it when he went high over Lennon's lead, root vocal like on the bridge on Baby's in Black - "Oh how long will it take..." Ticket To Ride - same thing.
That bridge, or "middle eight" as I think they would call it, ranks at the top of my list of favorite vocal performances in a Beatles song. I always turn it up for that section. That, along with the handclaps, always brings me joy.
Beatles For Sale was highly underrated. Its between "A Hard Days Niight" and "Help". But with songs like "Im A Loser" or "No Reply" or "I Dont Want To Spoil The Party" it shows The Beatles growing as songwriters. They were not quite in control in the studio yet but they wrote and played their own songs. No other group was doing that much in the studio in 64 except maybe The Rolling Stones and even they were mainly recording covers at the time. The Beatles were the real deal.
I think BFS is a far more better record than the other two. I believe the songs are more interesting on this album. Funny, up to Revolver I always thought that the winter albums were better than the spring / summer ones (ie: With the Beatles vs Please Please Me, HDN vs BFS, Help vs Rubber Soul)
20 years ago i bought Beatles For Sale, someone said to me "nooo, that's their worst record!".. but i wanted to hear Lennon's voice at its best ;D No way it's a bad record with that voice in it. Until Revolver his voice was super

John's weary, wounded, laconic style in the verses, and then Paul comes in to harmonise with his exclamations. Sensationally good. I read that John considered this song a turning point, when he stepped up a gear and became a more mature writer. The imagery is crystal clear to me. The desperation too. "If I were you...."
This is a very powerful and painful song. I wish somebody would've made a video of it that tells the story of the song. I actually lived this song many years ago and it still haunts me today. John sings the song with a lot of pain. This is one of my all-time favorite songs by The Beatles.

So someone help me with this please... How were isolated vocals recorded in ‘ 64 ‘ when they were not using headphones, and no monitors being played in the background? According to Geoff Emerick’s book, they didn’t use headphones in studio for multitrack recording until ‘66’. I know they had 2 track recording in ‘ 64 ‘ but how were Lennon and McCartney hearing themselves with no headphones? They had to be wearing them to do this vocal track.
