I am sole care-giver for my mom. This would be a great "just do one block" quilt, since time is not my own. Also, I think I'll use sticky-notes above/below each step so that when I get interrupted (which I will) I'll come back to the right step. :)

Hi You can usually add another row or two to make the quilt a rectangle for tall people to use. Regarding pinning, I sometimes use glue to "pin" small pieces....works great!
Cute block. The blues you used makes the block have a wintery/ snowflake look. This block in blues would make a great table topper/runner. Thank you for the tutorial on this block.
I also do a pieced backing. I try and use all of my scraps from piecing the front. Some are big and some are potato chip size. I find that kind of sewing very freeing! No plan, just sit and figure out how things go together. I try to not get too wrapped up in making any shape or size, and also try to minimize the amount of scraps I “recreate” using this method. Makes for an interesting, although sometimes crazy, backing and keeps my scraps in check. Yes, it does take a fair amount of time and the project can get stalled because of that, but still worth it to me! Thanks Corey! Loving the weekly videos!!!
@@brookhaag7021 does the overall quilt get heavier with a potato chip backing? I think all those extra seam allowances mean extra fabric so it might feel heavier? I’m like Corey, I think a pieced backing would be interesting but once I’ve made my top I want to finish the quilt and move on to the next one, well done to you for having the creativity and patience to do a pieced backing
@ Yes, it does get heavier. Lots more fabric and lots more thread. It’s not THAT much heavier though. But I quite like a heavy quilt, as I live in a colder climate. If you used a lightweight poly batting, or wool, you could take away some of the weight. I prefer a 100% cotton batting, but not one that is real thick. I use Quilter’s Dream cotton select for almost all of my quilts.

I say this every time but I loved this video! Love love love that beautiful wide red border too! I always think aqua/teal/blue-green and reds are so complimentary. And after watching you share the instructions for piecing the Startwist block, what came to mind was my Kentucky grandmother (my mamaw) who was a lifelong quilter and crafter. She always told me to make sure the back looked as good as the front, no matter if it was a quilt block or a crochet project. The back needed to be as pretty as the front or it wasn't done correctly! And the back of your quilt block looked perfect, just as nice as the front! It's funny the things that remind us of our loved ones, especially those who have taught us skills and passed on valuable knowledge that comes in so handy in our lives. I didn't pick up quilting until a few years ago (and I'm 53,) and I wish my mamaw could have known how much I love and enjoy it all. ❤

I like square quilt on my bed for 2 reasons. 1- don't rectangle because I don't cover pillows with quilt and 2- you never have to worry about the right side up. They all work.

I started piecing backings probably four years ago during COVID. I had ordered the specified yardage for a back, but neglected to order extra for the one-way fabric! Bummer! Faced with two options, either order another piece of fabric and pay shipping OR utilize all the pieces left from the quilt, including half-square triangles and tons of 4x1.5" strips. You guessed it, that quilt now has a lovely rectangular medallion on the back! That was so much fun salvaging a disappointing mess- up that it's routine for me now! Thank you so much for your weekly video! I live in a small Texas county and rarely meet up.with like-minded quilters so my connection with you via your blog and your videos is such an important part of my golden year life!
That sounds like an amazing quilt backing....pieced backing can really add a lot to an already beautiful project. And I'm go glad you can join in on Saturdays...we have such a nice community of quilters!
TIP. Minute 3:04 If you are a seam spinner, if helps to always sew "top up, bottom down" so that all of your seam spin clockwise. If you are more random, sometimes choosing bottom up, top down" the you will also have counter clockwise spins. No big deal in some blocks/quilts. VERY big deal in others.

Good morning, Corey! Yay! I don't *think* I have Star Twist yet. I will have to double check. Thank you for the tutorial on this block, they are always helpful. I am also glad that the pros mis - cut, too. Just the other night, I read a step over and over. Had the measurements in my head, and then proceeded to cut them an inch bigger than they were supposed to be 🤦♀️ I wouldn't have thought to put such large borders on a small quilt, but I love the way that turned out!

My piecing became much more accurate when I started using my walking foot for all of it. I was having the same problem that your listener asked about in your QA section of your video. I would pin a lot and despite that, the seams shifted while sewing. You must have heard me yelling "walking foot" right before you mentioned it! Other quilters use a small dot of glue to temporarily hold those seams together. Thank you, Corey, for another great and informative video.

You make Saturdays so fun. I shy away from square quilts but I have made them, and I like your explanation of why some look better as a square. When I do nesting seams, if possible I have the top of the seam facing the needle just like you showed.
Thank you for all your great tips for quilting I learn something new everytime I get sewing. Love a walking foot that was a game changer for me. I've started pinning horizontally at each end to keep the fabric from shifting. I always pin vertically at start/end and at seams when I'm looking for sharp points and joins etc. X from 🇦🇺
I love your beautiful day line. I made a quilt for myself and my daughter loved it so much I gave it to her. So my quilt shop had more fabric so I remade it again for myself. I'm keeping this one.
I recently made a black and white Pineapple table runner for a wedding gift and wanted the seams to nest perfectly. And it would be very obvious if they didn't. I used a small drop of fabric to hold the seams in place as I sewed them. It was perfect! I had never done this before and it was a game changer. I also use "quilt tacks" -3-4 stitches at each intersection when nesting seams. It's easier to get the intersections perfect when I'm only doing a few stitches.
Another fun video! I enjoy a pieced back. I have often used panels on the back and then attached borders to achieve the correct size. This makes it reversible - two for the price of one!

What an interesting suggestion to sew with the seam going up when you nest the seams, it feels unnatural to me as I too prefer it when they don't fight with the foot of the machine but I'll try it this way and see, it does make sense when you think about it! And as for square quilts, I love them, love their symmetry, come to think of it 99% of the quilts I've made are square . Thanks Corey for another great video, you really take the time to think and answer our questions❤
You can also use a drop of fabric glue at the seam intersection. Finished up my Cuddle Up Sampler top. I added a hanging Christmas tree ornament inside the wreath. Looks great!
I used to have issues with blocks coming apart. My stitch length was just a bit too long when I was sewing. They can try shortening the stitch length to see if it helps.
Hi Corey! I also like piecing quilt backs like your other viewer but….sometimes that can go overboard! I recently pieced a quilt back and my goal was to use all of the leftover fabrics but make it look intentional….I ended up doing more piecing on that stinkin back than the front. It is basically a reversible quilt and really pretty but I learned my lesson. (I hope!!!! 😂) Thanks for the great video today!❤ Lori

Star Twist quilt pattern could have been made with the EPP pieces for the stars. I enjoy the different coloration renderings, as I feel I am color challenged. I am able to make scrappy quilts pretty easily. LOL I look forward to your Saturday VLOGS. FOR adding rows to square quilt patterns, on your example, I can add 2 columns and 3 more rows to balance the now rectangular pattern.
I like to make quilts for our queen size bed square if there isn’t a directional fabric in them. Not being concerned about which way to put the quilt on a bed is nice.

I often use a tiny dab of Elmer’s glue (stick) on difficult seams or sometimes use a stabilizing (long) stitch or two to secure a seam into position before stitching with regular stitch length (sometimes I use both).
I prefer my top seam to go against because when it’s on the bottom, I’m more apt to have that one pops up & the flap gets stitched down going the wrong direction. But it’s not always possible as you said to sew the direction we want. Love all your tips.
29:40 When I make these type of flip and stitch patches, after I press the corners back to test them, I sew another parallel seam 1/2" into the extra so I can trim off an extra mini half-square patches. Then I can make a mini- pinwheel scrap quilt from all these trimmings somewhere down the road. I just hate tossing these cute corner pieces.

This is a block that I know looks trickier than it actually is....blocks are often that way until you see how they are broken down. =)

Borders can solve a lot of size issues! Glue basting is a great suggestion...thank you for mentioning it!

This is a great point to make...whenever we are changing the pressing instructions in a pattern, we have to thoughtful about it.

My piecing became much more accurate when I started using my walking foot for all of it. I was having the same problem that your listener asked about in your QA section of your video. I would pin a lot and despite that, the seams shifted while sewing. You must have heard me yelling "walking foot" right before you mentioned it! Other quilters use a small dot of glue to temporarily hold those seams together. Thank you, Corey, for another great and informative video.

You make Saturdays so fun. I shy away from square quilts but I have made them, and I like your explanation of why some look better as a square. When I do nesting seams, if possible I have the top of the seam facing the needle just like you showed.
Sometimes you really just want a rectangular shaped quilt and that's just fine! =)

I've started pinning horizontally at each end to keep the fabric from shifting. I always pin vertically at start/end and at seams when I'm looking for sharp points and joins etc. X from 🇦🇺

I love your beautiful day line. I made a quilt for myself and my daughter loved it so much I gave it to her. So my quilt shop had more fabric so I remade it again for myself. I'm keeping this one.

I recently made a black and white Pineapple table runner for a wedding gift and wanted the seams to nest perfectly. And it would be very obvious if they didn't.
I used a small drop of fabric to hold the seams in place as I sewed them. It was perfect!
I had never done this before and it was a game changer.
I also use "quilt tacks" -3-4 stitches at each intersection when nesting seams. It's easier to get the intersections perfect when I'm only doing a few stitches.

Another fun video! I enjoy a pieced back. I have often used panels on the back and then attached borders to achieve the correct size. This makes it reversible - two for the price of one!

What an interesting suggestion to sew with the seam going up when you nest the seams, it feels unnatural to me as I too prefer it when they don't fight with the foot of the machine but I'll try it this way and see, it does make sense when you think about it! And as for square quilts, I love them, love their symmetry, come to think of it 99% of the quilts I've made are square . Thanks Corey for another great video, you really take the time to think and answer our questions❤

You can also use a drop of fabric glue at the seam intersection. Finished up my Cuddle Up Sampler top. I added a hanging Christmas tree ornament inside the wreath. Looks great!

I used to have issues with blocks coming apart. My stitch length was just a bit too long when I was sewing. They can try shortening the stitch length to see if it helps.
Shortening stitch length often helps if you are having trouble with seams opening up.
Hi Corey! I also like piecing quilt backs like your other viewer but….sometimes that can go overboard! I recently pieced a quilt back and my goal was to use all of the leftover fabrics but make it look intentional….I ended up doing more piecing on that stinkin back than the front. It is basically a reversible quilt and really pretty but I learned my lesson. (I hope!!!! 😂) Thanks for the great video today!❤ Lori

Star Twist quilt pattern could have been made with the EPP pieces for the stars.
I enjoy the different coloration renderings, as I feel I am color challenged. I am able to make scrappy quilts pretty easily. LOL

FOR adding rows to square quilt patterns, on your example, I can add 2 columns and 3 more rows to balance the now rectangular pattern.

I like to make quilts for our queen size bed square if there isn’t a directional fabric in them. Not being concerned about which way to put the quilt on a bed is nice.

I often use a tiny dab of Elmer’s glue (stick) on difficult seams or sometimes use a stabilizing (long) stitch or two to secure a seam into position before stitching with regular stitch length (sometimes I use both).

I prefer my top seam to go against because when it’s on the bottom, I’m more apt to have that one pops up & the flap gets stitched down going the wrong direction. But it’s not always possible as you said to sew the direction we want. Love all your tips.

29:40 When I make these type of flip and stitch patches, after I press the corners back to test them, I sew another parallel seam 1/2" into the extra so I can trim off an extra mini half-square patches. Then I can make a mini- pinwheel scrap quilt from all these trimmings somewhere down the road. I just hate tossing these cute corner pieces.
Another great way to save those scraps fun a fun future project!

I think a square quilt is great on a bed, it doesn’t matter which way it goes. You can turn it so it will wear evenly.
