I do have to say one thing Steve...When it comes to CRT units and monitors, YOU"RE the guy I turn to for them. I use to see some TH-cam that do a fair amount to their credit. But nothing like the dedication you put into your works bro. Thanks as always Steve it it up as always 8^) Anthony..
You can try to look for electrical/computer repair shops that are small businesses first. They may be able to refer you to someone if they don't do it. It will be a pretty pricey job most of the time. No less than $200 generally. Other than that, I will be trying to set up a way for people to ship me the boards that they want recapped only & not the whole CRT. You'd have to reinstall the board & do all the calibrating.
@@RetroTechUSA thanks, in my case I got this beautiful trinitron xbr from the early 90s, the picture was perfect and sound but it started to turn itself off, then come back on, almost like a safety mechanism, I am pretty sure it is the G board power supply, but I am afraid to shock myself trying to take it out of the TV.
I love this stuff, thank you for these videos. I just went up on reddit for some help with no horizontal control in the service menu on a recently aquired kv35fs40 and your explanation of the different quadrants on the main board helped answer most of my question.
Another question Steve: I noticed in your previous video that you discharged the anode... but what about some of the larger capacitors on the board? Should those be discharged as well to prevent an unpleasant shock? Any other components that will shock me that im not aware of? I thought I had it all figured out last night but now I learn about discharging caps as well...
I've read about that and heard others warn of it. I'm not sure that any of these caps are really large enough to hold that much of a charge, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Thanks for bringing this up
@@RetroTechUSA Hi Steve, I don't know if you can help me. I have a 1990's Sony Trinitron CRT KV28FX60U and it's a UK model. This tv is more than 20 years old and was in perfect working condition until around a year and a half ago. Basically it wasn't used for 6-12 months and then when I tried to used it all the colors went very dull and dark. No matter what I did with the normal color settings nothing changed and it was still extremely dull. I don't have much knowledge of repairing CRT tv's, so I am not sure if this is a degauss issue or cracked solder joints. Anyway I also went into the service menu and really messed the colors up even more, changing some of the values and now you can see hardly anything. Is there anyway I can reset the values on one of the circuit boards on a Sony Trinitron. This tv was a fantastic tv in it's day. Any help would be appreciated thanks.
Hi. First off. Thank you for all your great videos. I picked up a Sony Trinitron KV-27FS100. Color looks very good but I do have some wavy sides. It bows inward on the left and right. My research online shows a lot of folks saying to either play with convergence strips or replace caps that filter 50/60hz. I've recapped a few arcade monitors with cap kits, but I'd be a bit lost where to go for this problem. You mentioned that a lot of the time the board is marked with the area it's relevant to. Do you know which area would cause the wavy sides? I've just push them to overscan for now but you can still tell if you look that the image is slightly distorted. I appreciate your help!
New to this... for my Emerson CRT, should i discharge the slightly swollen 560uf 200v capacitor while it's still attached to the motherboard, or should i desolder it first, then discharge it? How would I safely discharge a higher voltage capacitor?
Will a complete recap like this fix my geometry problems and bring the set back to showroom condition? Or would I still have to make adjustments within the service menu and internally? I know many of these adjustments require an oscilloscope or other special equipment that I won't have access to.
Unfortunately the cap kit will not fix the geometry really. That still needs to be adjusted. The problem is this lower end Consumer CRT did not have a lot of adjustment potentiometers installed.
Retro Tech Got ya, do you feel that the convergence strips did a better job as far as correcting your geometry problems? Also, do you have any more information regarding your proposed cap replacement service, where we could simply send you our TV boards. I'd be really interested in that!
Awesome video! Got a question for ya. I have a 27" Trinitron from 2003 or 2004 that i use for my ps2, so it has gotten a ton of use over the years. A couple years ago i started noticing ghosting of white objects on dark backgrounds (leaves a trail as it moves), it probably wouldn't bother most people but i notice it. Also there is a vertical line about 5 inches from the right side of the screen where from that point on the colors shift slightly. It is easier to see when the screen is black, after that line everything is just a slightly different shade of black. I Noticed this line about the same time as i noticed the ghosting. Do you think replacing the capacitors would resolve these issues?
I have a Kv-27v36 and the issue I have is the very corners of the screen stick point out. You had mention there a spot on the board that controls that. Would replacing the caps on just that spot fix the issue or would it be better to just recap the whole board?
Do replacement caps just need to match the original capacitance and voltage ratings? Or are there other properties that I need to match like the cap's ESR (equivalent series resistance)?
I've got a sony kv-27s42 that has some screen flicker (kinda looks like a candle if you know what I mean) anything you'd recommend I could do to fix it?
Hey what was wrong with your FV310 and did you fix it? Mine just started acting weird last night. Upper portion of the screen is staring to fold and shrink the picture. Come and goes.
So if you're not sure what the problem is, do you do a full capacitor replacement across the board? How do you know what kind of capacitors to order before removal?
I did replace them all. If you are having problems with one particular thing, you can just recap that portion of the TV/Board. I had to go through and manual count all the caps on this TV and order them individually from mouser.com
Thanks Steve, always getting great info from you. I ask because while I love my new PVM and have been playing on it a ton after some initial calibrations, it does have some very light shadowy ghosting against certain backgrounds. I've been told it's a sign of failing capacitors, and that capacitors are the first thing to go on CRTs in general so you'll wanna know how to replace them if you're an enthusiast. Not something that bothers me now but could clearly lead to more serious defects, so I think I'll practice capacitor replacement on my KV27S42 using your videos as a guide. Again thanks for all the hard work man, you're one of the only guys that consistently puts this comprehensive stuff out there for the less experienced.
Thanks for all the great videos, they are super helpful! I have a question about purchasing replacement capacitors. Do you have any guidelines or suggestions for ESR ratings? On Mouser, I've been filtering by the capacitance and voltage ratings for the radial leaded electrolytic capacitors (Wurth brand), but there still ends up being a list of around 7 difference choices with the only difference seeming to be their ESR rating. I'm tempted to choose based on price, hoping that anything produced today will be good enough for a CRT TV from 2004, but thought I would ask for your expertise first!
Maybe if a bad cap is causing a geometry issue, but (with my TV) changing the caps made NO improvement to the geometry. I am shooting a follow up video to answer this an other questions today. It should be out no later than tomorrow. Thanks
Thanks for the awesome videos on repairing CRTs! I got a question regarding a PVM I bought. Unfortunately it arrived with shipping damage. The color purity is bad. In a complete red picture I get on parts of the screen a more blueish red. This also happens with other colors. Can it be that the yoke got moved during shipping? Do you think I might be able to fix that with moving the yoke? Thanks!
Hi and thanks for watching. The yoke does have a set of convergence rings on it. You may be able to tell if any of the convergence rings moved during shipment. If they moved, it would cause color and purity problems.
Thanks for the answer! Yes, I checked to rings but they haven't been moved. They had a white mark on them and they all lined up. I actually tried correcting the problem by moving the rings. It is better, but not perfect. That is why I thought maybe the yoke itself has moved.
mldkhn1 A purity magnet may have fallen off too. It's just a small coin size magnet that is stuck to the tube by 2 sided tape. A convergence strip could have moved or need to be moved also. That affects colors also.
There are 4 convergence strips on the tube. I guess they are all still in place. I didn't see any magnets when I opened it earlier. I have to check that again!
go to the hardware store and get some small magnets of different strengths (thumb nail size to thumb size) and some two sided tape. with the pvm turned on and an image on the screen place the magnets on the tube of the pvm until the colors are corrected. might have to flip the magnets. Tape down the magnets where you want them.
Awesome video! Love Sony TV's lol. I have a very similar model its KV-27S25 which recently the upper corners are not as sharp as they once were. I noticed you mentioned an area that affects the corners. How was the outcome? Did it correct the corners and convergence?
Thank you! I actually finally found the service menu for this tv. Here is a link to those instructions. I think you need to press Mute to write your changes. Please check the comments of that video to be sure.
Your videos are just awesome! Very informational. I was able to get into the menu and adjust some but no convergence. Was watching your other video about the convergence strips. Will try that too. I do feel I might need to replace those caps for the pin area you mentioned. I have never discharged a CRT before and it kinda scares me lol. I live by myself. Can I replace the caps with the board attached still?
Steve, I picked up the exact same model Sony today. Do you have the list of Capacitors you bought for your TV? I can't find the service manual online so it would be a lot easier to have a list someone else already put together. Thanks.
I do have an order sheet on mouser. It is for the entire CRT though and there is no install guide. It's over 100 Caps I believe. If you want a copy, please email me snutt541@gmail.com
A small bo boo there. On the first cap you removed you trimmed the cap AFTER you flowed it. You should REFLOW after trimming because the trim action can sometimes leaves cracks in the solder. Trimming should be done before a final reflow. I think this is important enough to consider as you may see problems that weren't there prior to the recapping process and that could be a huge disappointment for well, anyone. All right cheers! For this reason alone, I had to leave a thumbs down which hurts me greatly because I know how much work you are putting into these videos and I sincerely appreciate it but I hope it's fair game to call this out and react in good faith with a thumbs down.
Yeah, unfortunately my producer missed that one in the final cut. Just kidding. I do all these videos by myself in my garage, so on occasion I miss something like this. Thanks for watching. I can say that the Cap replacement did not improve the geometry at all. I do think the sound is better on the TV afterwards though. Some of those caps must have been failing.
I feel like i have to do this to my trinitron too now :D
I do have to say one thing Steve...When it comes to CRT units and monitors, YOU"RE the guy I turn to for them. I use to see some TH-cam that do a fair amount to their credit. But nothing like the dedication you put into your works bro.
