    I think is a very unique human being. Not only does he always find a way to fix the van including multiple total engine rebuilds to feeding himself Alaska and others. He is an amazing people person and not any other individual could have made such an amazing success of a trip such as this. Making every place into a unique and fun having experience.

    The previous episode and the first few minutes of this episode brought back beautiful memories from my visit to Banff and Jasper, AB. Driving on the roads of the Rocky Mountains was such a treat! My hands were on the wheel but couldn't help my eyes from stealing long gazes at the snow-capped mountains towering above me. Having a hearty steak dinner with a 360 view of the Rockies after a day of snowboarding wasn't too bad either!

    My 18 year old at the time GMC truck made the trip with no mechanical problems except for an exhaust manifold heat shield that came loose and caused a short between the hot wire from the battery and the ground from the engine block. It fried the insulation on the ground cable from the battery, and disconnecting the battery while driving seemed to work OK as we made our way down from Eagle Plains on the Dempster Highway where the trouble began down to White Horse where I just simply removed the heat shield and we made it down the Cassiar and back to Vancouver with no more trouble except for a headlamp dimmer switch which pitched us into total darkness near Stewart, BC, where we ended up camping for the night... That was a great adventure!

  • @001Neal100

    Hi Ben, your baby food lids are covering the fan housing hot air outlets which are meant to be ducted with flexible aluminum piping to channel air to heat exchangers. The heat exchangers use the hot exhaust pipe to heat the air inside and route it to the front of the van via the center pipe that runs underneath to the dash vents in the front. If your red levers do not work in the dash, the cables are probably rusted solid like mine were and snapped off. The cables run under the van to flaps on the front of the heat exchangers which can be opened to control warm air to the front of the van. If you dont have heat exchangers you should block the holes to allow more cooling air to flow over the cylinders and cylinder heads. However you wont get any warm air to the front of van when it gets cold and screen fogs up.

    I noticed that when you were reinstalling the baby food container tops in the fan shroud that the ribbed air hoses that go from the fan shroud and down through the engine sheet metal to the heater boxes were missing. Blocking off this air to the heater boxes is ok as long as you don't need defrost or heat. I want to STRONGLY recommend that the hole in the engine sheet metal also be blocked off just as tightly as you sealed the fan shroud with the baby food container tops. The correct size freeze plugs work well too and are available at a decent auto parts store. The reason I STRESS THIS is being an air cooled engine the cooler the air cooling the engine the cooler the engine operating temperature will be. If the engine sheet metal has a hole in it (from the fresh air hoses and their seals not installed) then the engine cooling fan will source the air to cool the engine from beneath the engine and not from the louvered vents on the side of the body. This source of air has just left the cylinder heads and cylinders (cooloing the engine) and is very hot. Sucking this very hot air through the hole in the engine sheet metal and attempting to cool the engine with it will cause an over heating problem BIG TIME. To stop recirculating this hot air is EXTREAMLY IMPORTANT! Please make sure these holes are sealed and that the rubber gasket between the body and the engine sheet metal has no rips or tears. Inspect this gasket closely all the way around the engine. Each time you remove and reinstall the engine is the easiest time to do this.
    If the fresh air hoses are being used then still pay close attention to the condition of the rubber seals around each fresh air hose at the bottom (just on top of the engine sheet metal).
    May I recommend that you get an infared pyrometer. What ever surface you point it's lazer on will tell you the temperature of that surface. Harbor Freight sells one for a reasonable price. I use this as a diagnostic tool all the time. (If I think I have a brake that is dragging or sticking on then just shine the lazer on each brake to find which one is the hottest!)
    For more perminate monitoring you could consider installing these gauges: oil PSI, oil Temperature, Cylinder Head Temperature & Intake Manifold Vacuum.
    Since your engine is fuel injected it should have an oxygen sensor and being able to monitor how rich or lean the engine is running would help ward off trouble before it happens and a gauge displaying this information would be just the thing to have for this.
    One last trick I use cautiously is when trying to find a vacuum leak I spray short bursts (using the red tube) of brake clean in a suspected area. If the engine idle speed increases then you have found your unmetered (not going through the Mass Air Flow Meter) air leak. This type of air leak will cause the mixture to be lean contributing to a hotter operating temperature possibly burning a valve or a piston or both.
    While at an auto parts store see if they can sell you a longer than stock ignition coil wire. This will allow you to mount the coil to a surface ( on the driver's side (left) of the engine compartment there may be the bottom portion of the spare tire well, as an example) away from the heat and vibration of the engine. You will need a longer power lead and a longer wire to the distributor as well. Now it will stop shaking the rivets apart at the coil. Also please plug up the holes in the air shroud where the mounting bolts ripped loose to stop that air leak. As your trip continues please contact me with any Kombi Questions as I have worked on VWs for over 50 years. I am sorry to have mentioned these observations now as I think you said you were looking at your 11th engine rebuild. Also please check out a website: www.thesamba.com as this is an excellent source for parts and information for your Kombi. Lastly if you have a question please just ask and I will get you an answer!
    Happy Motoring!
    G.

    at the very least, start a trip like this with a brand-new engine; even if the van is used. I have enjoyed watching your progress even though I only started following you this last year. Mainly, I followed because, as a youngster I used to take short trips to Baja, and around the California Coast in a Vw Campervan. I have been getting the itch after many years of city living, and I may set-off soon on a trip like this. Good luck on your next trip.

    • @pokechopachunky2905

      Mario Cooke
      those busses are notorious for breakdown. the engine was a 1940 design and to this day still made the same way. if you get a year out of a new one it's a miracle. everyone puts the ecotec swap in them or something equivalent, then they're reliable. we've had several kombis and they are so much fun when they run

    • @mariocooke5463
      @mariocooke5463 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pokechop, some people have been putting in a 2.1 Suzuki engine that fits well. Heard of that? I will be leaving on a (perhaps) never-ending trip within a couple of years, and I am weighing my options. A California Synchro might work, but we don't have them in America.

    • @mariocooke5463
      @mariocooke5463 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      also, Pokechop, being that it is such a weak engine, carrying up to four passengers and gear, going up mountains...too much work for it. I had a Vw camper with a Corvair engine that gave no problems until I had a terrible oil leak and I left it on the side of the road where it broke down.

    • @pokechopachunky2905
      @pokechopachunky2905 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mario Cooke
      thanks for the reply. I haven't heard of the suzuki swap, but I know they're reliable engine's. I bought a wrecked be TDI from Craigslist and a friend put that motor in our last one. it worked great. pretty fast and powerful and 35 mpg highway. I put about 100k miles on that bus. recently sold it for a lot more than I paid, but maybe get another one someday

    Don't want to hate, and I'm sure is part of the production (makes the video more interesting), but who in their right mind would take such a long journey with an old engine? I don't know... I think the long drives are tough enough to have to deal with engine issues on top of it.

    Imagine how would it it be if you have not have so many issues with your vehicle, you guys have enjoyed your journey even with so many mechanical bugs,

    "we're insulating the the coil with a board strap" that's my bet for the cause of the fire. I'll donate a whopping 5 dollars if I'm right.

    i had a 65 bug 38 years ago, crankcase seals notorious leakers, lost a coil on the road, only 10 miles from home. forest fires are nature's way to clear the dead wood, been going on for eons! you get wild fires in Cali cuz the treehuggers won't permit the cutting down of DRY, "deadwood"...
