  • Snowplanes like this 1963 Scorpion air-sled were once dotted across the prairies. Manufactured by Polaris in Minnesota, only 10 Scorpions were ever produced. Take a spin in one with Alberta snowmobile enthusiast Jerry Kallal, who put hundreds of hours into its restoration.

Scorpion Trail a Sled Snow Planes were built in Crosby Minnesota from 1960-63. After that time they developed Scorpion snowmobiles. They built a total of 40 Snow Planes over that time period. They sold 25 of them to Polaris Ind. in 1963. It could be this was one of them sold to polaris. This information I found at "Scorpion online" a site dedicated to Trail a Sled Inc. Scorpion Inc. and Scorpion snowmobiles history.

0:00 The "on" and "off" switches are mounted upside down. Any reason for this? Thank you!

"Snow plane" is a poor choice of words to describe the contraptions. When I was a kid, we built these things using old Harley 45 cubic inch flathead engines for power, and used an industrial fan blade as a propeller. We called it an air sled...there were no airplane parts and the machine definitely did not plane when in motion.

The term came from the original construction (my grandfather Karl Lorch invented them early 30s in Saskatchewan). They called it a snowplane because they were built like an airplane using welded aluminum tubing and doped canvas covering it. Most of them also had airplane motors (Lycoming). L

Sounds like it runs on maple syrup and Molsens.

There are no real maple trees in the west. "Manitoba maple" is actually box elder. So no "real" maple syrup. But we make syrup from birch and poplar. I have heard of Molsens but wouldn't waste that for fuel.

this is news? planes only very seldom fly, it is very common for planes to be even older than that and still in perfect condition. 1963 is nothing.
