  • Here is my experience at Brimfield in July 2022. All of my buying and selling in one video. I had a great time seeing my friends and meeting new people. Brimfield is a great flea market / outdoor antiques show. Perfect for flippers and resellers, people looking for ebay or etsy goods and collectors looking for that special item. It is easily the show I look forward to most every year.
    My own website is www.mattgreigantiques.com

Loved it. We really enjoy the "look behind the curtain" of these longer selling/set up videos. Surely it takes a lot of time and effort to pull them together, but they are our favorites, and we appreciate it. Looking forward to the next one! Good luck at the September show!

Thanks so much! And thanks for watching of course. It did take too long to edit. I still have the Spring one to do as well as NH antiques week.

as a veteran Brimfield dealer (Brifmield Acres North, now Dealer's and Mays) you really nailed it. Most bloggers post just what they are looking for, but you covered lots of different merch. You gave a really accurate view of what dealers do, but at the same time gave shoppers a look into the different fields. Love all your videos, and although I am not a primitives /Americana dealer, I like what you buy,

Thank you. Its hard to film too much stuff I know absoultely nothing about (because I wouldn't necessarily know whats good), but I know a bit more than what I mainly focus on buying so I try to catch all of that.
I love Brimfield for its variety though. Thanks for watching
I used to do the Dealers / Mays combo myself

It is, I've always bought and sold the most in the Spring. I definitely didn't buy enough to justify going there just to buy.

Killer vid as usual bro, your welcome for the sausage. Crazy that HGTV was literally at my neighbors and didn't stop in our booth.... Still not packed for next week but we get the truck Sunday so I guess I gotta get my butt packing. See you soon!

Thanks for watching. I am packing all this weekend. Leaving early Monday. HGTV should have spent all day with you two and maybe Aaron. Seen some good stuff.

Have fun! I'm booth 90 towards the middle of the third row.
That ice cream truck is on the main drag closer to heart of the mart, sort of in front of the Antiques Center building.

What is the average profit margin that dealers strive for?

Thats a great question and something I occasionally mention briefly when I talk about why I don't buy something. I should do a whole video on it. When I first had a booth in an antique mall and did little cheap one day local shows in the early 2000s the rule of thumb was to at least double your money. Pay $50 and net $100.
Its simplistic and not remotely accurate for how I do it but I know others still abide by the rule. For cheaper stuff I usually want a much higher rate of return while I dont mind buying something for $400 and flipping it quick for $450 or slightly higher.
I like to think of the work I have to put into selling something. Generally if I am selling it online it takes me at least 30 mins of work (not including any research on the item). Thats 30 mins between taking the photos, listing it somewhere and shipping it. So the same amount of work whether its a $30 object or $400. So I try to make the time worth while to me. I'd like to say thats at least $30 an object but I do sometimes work cheaper for various reasons.
I do buy cheaper items to sell at a show, esp if the return is really high, say $1 into $10, but most of the shows I do are too pricey to pay booth rent that way. Brimfield is the exception as I have lots of space to spread out.

@@antiquingwithmattgreig1370 all things being equal…why not buy stuff in 500.00 to 5000.00 range, no furniture or Hugh stuff, lower the actual profit margin to 10%, sell at very selective shows, and have a great website? Most websites for antique dealers, especially New England dealers are horrible, no prices, sold stuff commingled with stuff for sale, crappy pictures, and poor descriptions. It would work for good bottles, early glass, toys, banks, insulators, stoneware, etc.

@@chrishartz2397 Shows are too expensive for the most part plus hard to say what or how many good shows are left. But the better shows cost at least 2-7k to set up at so you'd have to sell 100k or more to make it worthwhile at 10% profit.
I like to work on smaller margins but one bad buy will sink 5 or more good ones at a tight margin.
I can't afford to sink that much in inventory. I know dealers with a million or more in inventory but most of them got to that point gradually over 30 plus years of dealing
