    My mother used to tell me of her father's complaints about ducks swimming in the cattles' water tank and how gallons of water had to be bucket dipped out. My grandfather was 6 years old when his family staked a claim in the Oklahoma land rush. My mother was a child in the 19teens. This was before water pumps and generators and everything on the farm was done by hand. It may be a "dirty job" but it will still be a dirty job a hundred years from now.

      At least Eleanor is smart. So happy you treated her first . Cleaning those water tires looks like it is a job since you have to have extra items there to help. What do goldfish eat while in there? They are larger now.

      janetscott - goldfish generally do not die in icy water. They can survive most water temperatures around the year. To make it easy for the animals to drink when iced up is to put a couple of tennis balls or a football in the tank. There will always be a drinking hole.

    • @dakotawinds9291
      @dakotawinds9291 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lisa-jb9rg oh please, this is normal of any tank, pond etc. It is what it is. The goop in the bottom is algae and will not harm anything as it always sinks to the bottom, might be a small amount of dirt mixed in from the bison's feet or mouths. Some places don't clean out their tanks more then every other year that I have seen. The barley bales help a fair amount also in my experience as we used them with our pond also. Once or twice a year cleaning these out are not a problem at all.

    Dusty, chlorine, even in the smallest bit will kill the goldfish. That's why you have to put de-chlorinator in the water when you set up an aquarium. Don't put any chlorine tabs in with the fish still in it. Just move them to another area if you're worried about them making the Bison sick. I don't think that two goldfish could make enough waste to bother your Bison, especially since the water is always refreshing when it gets low. Eleanor is so sweet! Glad she got some cubes of her own. Take care, Love from Memphis, TN!

    I remember my husband moving the water shut off valve from the outside of the house to underneath the house and around a big wall. During the winter when the pipes froze and burst and it was below freezing and water everywhere, he had to crawl through that freezing water to shut it off! the two goldfish are fine in that size of "tank" we keep 1 per 20 gallons. Do not add chlorine to that tire water that will kill them. You left enough stuff in when you cleaned it out that they still have plenty to eat inside there. Goldfish are fairly hardy and will be just fine. I used to have a pond 2' deep 7' long by 5' wide and we kept 4 koi and 2 shubunkin goldfish in it most of the summer (over winter they were in a 1' deep 2' wide by 6' long winter holding tank that we called the coffin lol). Yes shop vac is perfect for cleaning like that, that is how I cleaned our pond each spring of the gunk from over late fall and winter (leaves mostly). Cleaned the pond and filters, replaced the filter media (quilting batting) refilled the pond and treated the water, let set and ran pumps and filters for 4 days then added the fish back in. Loved that thing (hated cleaning it in the spring though) and miss it but had to take it out when my daughter started walking good cause she would not stay out of it, always trying to swim and with the rock edging it was not safe in case she slipped and fell in knocked her self out and drowned (she was a Houdini on figuring on how to get out of locked doors). The Koi we donated to our local Zoo for their huge koi pond (they are still there, see a couple of them each time we visit and both have unusual markings so yes I know they were ours). The two shubunkins we kept in a 75 gallon fish tank and just lost them both a few years ago (lost electricity at house while we were gone camping for a week - person taking care of the critters didn't think to check the pumps (filters and air) on the fish tank).

    On our cattle ranch in Namibia we had 2-sided back to back cement water troughs that watered 2 camps. These troughs had large outlets (stuffed with a Hessian plug) that we could open to clean the troughs. These were fed with water from large reservoirs that we would swim in. Green scum flouters ignored when it was about 40 degrees C.

    With fertilizer shortage I can not believe you threw away the liquid gold from the tank. Would have worked for wife's flowers. Thanks for sharing 🙏 😎 🏖 🏝

    We always had gold fish in my Grand fathers big tank and had no problems. I used to get assigned to break the ice when it got too thick and would somtimes see the fish under the ice after I got holes for the Angus to drink from; fish survived all winter but we never let it freeze solid of course. The big Tank was concrete and probably a couple of thousand gallons fed from a windmill.

    You could put some Mosquito fish in too👍, not only do they eat the mosquito larvae , they eat the algae & scumb to keep the water fairly clean--most states have a COUNTY EXTENTION PROGRAM & you can get them free to stock your ponds & such to keep mosquitos way DOWN on your property,, just a thought🤔🐡🐡🦟🦟-- good luck cleaning the rest of the water source for the Bison👍☘

    Question ... How did the goldfish get in the tank? People sometimes flush their fish down the toilet and find themselves in odd places. Tip, goldfish have very slimy skin/scales and it's best to catch them with a damp rag. This will not hurt them. Also some people actually put g/fish in their animals tanks to keep the water clean. They eat the food that drops out of their mouths, flies etc.. that drop into it. They can stand all temperatures and have been known to live under ice in winter...Maybe you knew all this but not all people do.

    The tire waterer is such a crafty designed. Definitely durable and much needed for your bison.
    Only two more to go...but you are a pro now.
    I think my grands would love one in their cow/sheep pasture. I'm not sure how it would work I'm Michigan winters.

    Forget the fancy drain - you could speed up cleaning if you used a siphon hose to drain those - you could then vacuum the bottom as it drains 😎
    3/4" or 1" hose would do nicely. The shop vac hose would almost work; it's probably just a little too short to not be fussy. A longer hose makes it easier to maintain the siphon. I'd wager you'd probably not have to do any bucketing or vacuuming with the shop vac.

    My grandad swore by putting couple goldfish in each water trough. He was convinced they helped keep down some worms and other parasites. And of course us kids loved it too......

    It's obvious you care for those Bison, because that was a nasty job. Unbelievable the goldfish survived and have grown so much. It's always a treat to see Eleanor, she was smart enough to get her own supply of cubes. Have the best day possible and thanks for sharing your adventures.
