Towards the end of 1973, a war broke out between the Israelis and Arabs. The Arabs lost the war and the Israelis occupied some territories beyond their borders. The Arabs demanded a complete Israeli withdrawal from all territories beyond the 1949 Armistice border. Israel refuses.
Consequently, Oil producing nations, led by Saudi Arabia, started an oil embargo for Israel and all the nations that support Israel.
The embargo caused an oil crisis, or "shock", with many short- and long-term effects on global politics and the global economy.
From among the targets, Ethiopia was one. Everything stopped in Ethiopia. The cars, the trucks, electricity, water supply, you name it, everything that depended on oil, simply stopped.
At the same time, there was a drought in the Central Ethiopia. Ethiopians were unable to transport food from fertile area to the drought area. Ethiopians and Eritreans demonstrated. Protesters demanded that the king step down. Police and protesters clashed in several cities. The armies were gradually drawn to the people's demand, and in 1974, they rose in mutiny for the last time.
Due to this crisis, USA started to cut their expenses. They closed Kagnew station. They only left few personals there. The 12 million dollar budget cost for maintaining their soldiers at Kagnew Station was cut. 12 million is 75 million in today's currency.
During those days, the Soviets were offering help to solve their energy needs to any nation that's willing to accept Communism. Ethiopia joined the Communist bloc nations and became socialists and the Derg came to power under the leadership of Mengistu Hailemariam. The Derg ruled Ethiopia until the collapse of communism.
