For those wondering, the show was loosely based off the book “Lonely Survivor” by Marcus Luttrell that tells the story of a doomed mission by Navy Seals in Afghanistan in 2005. Luttrell was the only survivor from the four person Seal Team that went on a mission to kill a notorious Taliban leader. The Scouts’ adaption of the book is a nod to their 75 year legacy as a corps and the strong brotherhood that has allowed them to survive after so many long years. It’s fantastic show and brings tears to my eyes still. I had the pleasure of being on that field with 149 of my brothers.

The song they were singing was called “You’ll Never Walk Alone” this has been Madison’s Corps song since 1954(The Corps was founded in 1938 and came from a Boy Scout troop) the song is unique to the scouts and it’s something that the scouts sing before preforms to give hope and it’s also a way to connect with past alumni, the people singing along in the crowd are Madison Scouts alumni.

Idk if you are aware but there was a corps that used that song long before Madison used it and that was the racine scouts explorer corps(tho oldest continuous drum corps)which one of the members that started the Madison scouts was a member of them before starting the Madison scouts

For Courtney...when they start singing, the tune is "You'll Never Walk Alone" from the musical "Carousel" and is the corps song for Madison...as close to a sacred tune as there is for the org.
The people standing and singing in the stands along with the corps are past alums (if they're guys....the corps did not go co-ed until this year)...the corps end up playing the rest of the chart to close the show.
The log on the ground at the beginning of the vid has MYNWA on it....May You Never Walk Alone (also the letters posted in another comment). I know of a number of Madison alums who have MYNWA on their headstones.

Those guard guys crying at the end was partially part of the show illustrating soldiers losing friends in war; it more likely were some senior corps members who were doing their last ever show before aging out of the corps

  • @camaro6712
    @camaro6712 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

So the song they were singing is "You'll Never Walk Alone" from a Rogers and Hammerstein musical "Carousel". That is the Scout's corps song (typically each corps has a song that all members learn which is special to them and they'll perform from time to time). Most of the people singing it in the crowd were likely members themselves, or had family who were.
Edit: Also that MYNWA phrase you saw on those prop logs and people in the comments is their main motto "May You Never Walk Alone"

The show is based on “The Lone Survivor.” The song was our corps song, “Never Walk Alone.” The MYNWA on the logs stand for “May you never walk alone.” Hope this helps! Sure others have said the same thing or given more detail.

As others have commented the Scouts' song is You'll Never Walk Alone. They also used to have alumni from the corps present new marching members with a literal nail on a lanyard for them to wear. It stands for Never Alone In Life (NAIL) and that alumni and marching member stay in touch with each other from that point forward (well, I know our son does anyway from when he march in 2016 and 2018).
Such a fantastic organization with one of the deepest, most passionate, alumni in the activity.

Madison Scouts have always been a crowd favorite, often getting several standing ovations throught the performance. They have struggled in the last 15 years to remain in the top 12, but still a crowd favorite. They were one of the two remaining all-male corps left (the Cavaliers being the other), but this year have decided to drop that requirement. Many of the older corps started as drum and bugle combos for the local Boy Scouts troops. Drum corps started as military or "corps style" marching, but these days more dance and theatrical movements have been integrated.

The song was the Madison scouts corps song, “you’ll never walk alone”, and the people singing in the audience were alumni to the corps. Also, the scouts were one of 2 remaining all male corps, along with the cavaliers, up until this year, where they were going to allow women in the group for the first time ever. Unfortunately the 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID.

The feeling you describe is exactly why I fell in love with drum corps. Was at drum major (folks who conduct) camp in '84 and we got to see the Cadets rehearse and perform at a show. They did West Side Story that year and the show started with the song Maria. On the first big swell of the horns they did a slow horn raise and this warm gust of air coming from the horns hit the stands. I had goosebumps then and am getting them again just typing this. Definitely something you need to see live to appreciate!

That combined with the fact that the lady's mic continuing to cut out was actually planned made me lose some respects for Crown. Also their crown set at the end waks the most disappointing crown set of all time :( in conclusion, the show was exellently executed; but very poorly thought out. Better Crown shows include:

Madison Scouts is Boy Scouts of America explorer troop. The stadium announcer said "Representing Explorer Troop 600". Being BSA, it is all male. There has been a few guest female performers over the years. Being that the BSA has started admitting girls, there will likely be female members now and in the future. Madison is/was one of only two corps that are all male, the other being the Cavaliers. What the corps was singing was the corps song "May You Never Walk Alone". You saw the baton a couple times with "MYNWA". I believe there is a video somewhere in TH-cam universe with Elvis singing that song during a concert.

The Madison scouts were originally a Boy Scout troop when they first started in the 1930s. They are an all-male corps to maintain that 'fraternal bond' of the members within the corps. Besides the Cavaliers, they were the only other all-male drum corps in the states. However, they announced after last season that they were going to integrate and become a co-ed unit, allowing women to try out for the Scouts for the first time They did have female solo performers in 2005 and 2017, respectively, but just as soloists. We have to wait until next year to see the debut of the new Madison Scouts.

It's a really good song, I remember it from the movie and all the different people who have sang it over the years. Liverpool band Gerry and the Pacemakers charted #1 in the UK with it as a single in 1963, Also #1 in Australia and New Zealand in 1964. Most recently the song has become an anthem of support for medical staff, first responders, and those in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two of the songs in this show are from call of duty modern warfare 3 and call of duty black ops 2.
Another fun fact. This is probably the most demanding show I marched in my five years at the scouts. Usually you have a ballad in the middle of the show which serves as a breather for the horn line. This show had the ballad at the end, so we were basically on the gas from the start all the way to the closer.

Never leave anyone behind in war you bring them back no matter what it takes. So the song " "You'll will never walk alone" Is in this case is a tribute to the warriors who gave all.
As said most gave some .. some gave all.

Hair looks great. I love your reactions, very real and heartfelt. You make them about the videos and not yourself as many TH-camrs do. To top it off you have become my 3rd favorite New Zealander(sorry for the ranking) behind your Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Gin Wigmore one of the most talented singer, song writers in the world. Thank you for all the warm, heartfelt and sometimes patriotic reviews. You are a New Zealand treasure.

Courtney, you got me to cry again... When the audience first stands its because they play "TAPS" which is played at every veterans funeral, which is what gets me every time as I watched my father get laid to rest . Then they go right into "YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE". Thank you for playing videos that show the good side of Americans.

Hey Courtney- Yes! Those guys with the flags and rifles are called the color guard. Those things that they catch all at the same time with that great "SNAP!" - that you really liked are "rifles." And all male color guards are, to your point, very powerful. If you want more of that action, definitely take the recommendation below for Mad World/2010 Cavaliers. It's one of my all-time favorite shows. Scouts are amazing, but the Cavaliers really rock.

This is my first time watching this show. It is now definitely one of the best dci shows I’ve seen. That closer really hit different. Especially with the corps’ song... definitely made me shed a tear.
P.S: Please react to RCC 2018! its a WGI (indoor percussion) show.

When she was talking about judges I was just like oh honey the judges that judge wgi, dci, and other marching arts are so wacky and sometimes I wonder for their sanity. Granted this is just from what I heard from people who march in higher ups, but I could be wrong. Also yes they are called color guard 🙃

GO MADISON SCOUTS!!! the person so was holding the friend at the end was actually in the Corp for five/ six years and that’s why he had a different color uniform. Because that was his last performance he would ever do with the Madison Scouts. May You Never Walk Aline 💚

He was actually the “Lone Survivor” of the four person team. The book/movie Lone Survivor is a true story and this field show is us trying to tell that story. The other three were killed in a vicious battle and he symbolizes Marcus Luttrell, the actual man who’s story we are telling. But yes, it is also true that he was a six year vet who was aging out. The lighter color uniforms are supposed to represent the spirits/angels of the three men who died in battle.
