@@kashty024is it hard?! Because I am gonna write bc work about this topic
Girl thanks a lot! I needed to understand the concept of index/indexical for a class about transcultural communication. Very insightful!
Life saver for every art history course and art lectures I have had at cal poly
This subject is so deep and pervasive in our every step of life that you can easily get lost in it forever. Not to mention the doors it opens...
That's really a great video getting me to understand semiotics!! I'm really fascinated by the Structuralists vs Post-structuralists, and have just read Barthes's the Death of The Author, which is closely related to the concept of semiotics~!
the video when im alone: 0:30
the video when my mom walks in: 3:08
Play means moving forward. Forward means right. The Play button is an arrow facing right. Get it?
thanks madam, u explained very well..
this helped so much. i love you.
This was fantastic! I remember a similar thing about icons in Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics. Fascinating stuff!

That's a great idea! :)

Thank you Mam....
Very clear , thanks

I am confused between index and icon as both meaninng is same ?? Can anyone tell me ?? What is arbitary meaning ??
En español tenemos una idea en la cual tendemos a diferenciar signo("sign")de símbolos("Symbols"), En ambos casos representa ideas, pero intuitivamente me entiendo más con el significado que le dan los ingleses.
great video, you have a new suscriber!!
This was a lot of fun. But the "play" button is not arbitrary but rather indexical. The right pointing arrow indicates the direction a tape would play in a recording studio tape deck of an old Boom Box playing cassettes. A button pointing in the opposite direction, to the left meant rewinding the tape, the tape would spin in the other direction. The addition of multiple arrows (fast forward or fast rewind) indicate the speed in that direction would be increased. In the digital age, folks like You Tube have adapted the right-arrow play button for digital uses and so it may seem arbitrary, but for anyone who used or still use tape decks of any kind, it's most def an indexical sign.
But like I said, I enjoyed this a lot and will be sharing it with a colleague and some students (I'm a PhD student at University of Chicago).
Your argument works also for the words of a language, they are symbolic but they are not arbitrary : they all have an etymology. Maybe a better definition for the symbol will be a conventional relationship rather than an arbitrary relationship between the representamen and the meaning.
The "play" button is arbitrary.
At some point in history, some guy in an office decided a triangle pointing right or left would mean play or rewind while he was designing the first boom box, cassette player, etc.
There is nothing inherent about a triangle that suggests the direction of the tape moving.
In some "alternate timeline", someone could have chosen to associate play with an arrow shape, or a heart shape with the pointed end showing direction, or maybe even a thumbs up in the direction of play. There are many possibilities.
Good luck with your PhD, I am also doing one.
sakeos23 Woaw... I actually didn't know that... Thanks...
and thus the Media Aesthetics course was born. jk I know it existed long before this but it's funny that I looked this video up to remind myself of something i learned in class and I found someone from U of C
You should consider using examples that can be shown in a public school. I'm not sure I'm allowed to show this in my high school art class due to the nude painting. I know, it's art and personally, I have zero issues with it...but some communities are conservative and as such might object. Just my thoughts.
Well that was a great reminder. Thank you :).
this was fantastic
Thank you so much. this video is awesome. It helps to understand semiotics. love ya :D
Thank you!
I'm now ready for my midterm lol. Thank you for explaining it so well!
This was useful thank you👍
What does arbitrary mean??
Somebody get Plato on the phone! Nice job!
Concrete Turtle Thanks :)
If a picture depicts a family, is it iconically a bunch of people and indexically the idea of family or home?
im honestly even more confused like whattt im honestly going to fail my exam lmaoo
But what does 'Play' sound like or look like?
Quite interesting!!!
Thank you! :)
What's more of an index? A photograph or a hologram?
Please can you Write the definitions of icon, symbol and index with examples in replying me in the comment.
Is an image with words symbolic?
Yeah! It certainly can be. An image is iconic, according to Peirce (a semiotician/philosopher) and the words would be symbolic. If you are interested in the topic, there is also fascinating work done on words called ideophones.
At 00:36 you say that "The Process from the signifier to the signified is called signification" But on your drawings signification is placed on the right side, at the arrow down. The arrow down means signified to signification. I just wanted to ask what is the right meaning of signification. Signified to signifier or signifier to signified?
Thank you so much :)
The "Object" is about what sign refers ....it is not a concept or signified .....even signified is closely related to " Interpretant
hi Karin, i would like to quote you on my assignment on semiotics, however, i do not have much details except for your name and the link. please help..assignment due on the 21st
Indexicality and ostension in philosophy of language is to me a problematic area since, since ostension cannot rest on the physical act of pointing. The notion in semiotics of an indexical sign also seems like a weak point in the whole theory since the photo could look just like you (given the distance, clarity, etc.) and yet have been taken of someone else, so that it would in fact be indiscernible from a photo that was actually taken of you. The one may have the correct causal history, but that is the only thing suggesting it as a representation of you. Replies are welcomed.
THIS IS Good
does humain language include indexical iconic or symbolic signs ? justify your answer.
Nice introduction! It is pronounced CS "purse" not Pierce by the way!
Not true. The play button denotes play-forward movement by facing the same direction the we read & write.
Every thing was nice bt the picture at 3:21 it made me addicted to this video 😂😂😂
does Tom know that you are using his video?
anyone else here from school 👀
