  • This is a Step By Step assembly guide and honey bee introduction to the NEW Ivry B Hive Design.
    It's a horizontal hive, shaped like a cylinder that closely matches some of the oldest bee hives found in the Jordan Valley.
    This hive is wood and made without hardware, the original Jordan Valley hives were made of unfired clay and were kept in a structure, possibly a temple at the time of King Solomon.
    This is the most unique observation hive I've seen.
    WINTER UPDATE Feb 2024: • Ivry B Hive Update, ho...
    Learn More about the ancient inspiration for this hive design: www.world-arch...
    TODAY, July 25th is the day that Ivry-B is launching a fundraising campaign here in North America. You can learn more about that here:
    www.indiegogo....
    NOTE the first 300 supporters will receive $150.00 off. Please use this link: igg.me/at/ivry... 44 days left as of July 29, 2023
    I do not personally gain or benefit from this campaign in any way. BUT, this hive was presented to me in exchange for my opinion and observations.
    Who is this bee hive for?
    I think this is a very novel hive that serves as a fantastic conversation piece while providing people with a very safe way to observe honey bees going about their tasks without disturbing them. Beginners as well as seasoned beekeepers will surely appreciate having this hive on the porch, in the honey house, or class-room. I will personally be using it as an educational tool.
    The frames are unique and round. I see honey harvesting from these frames as another unique opportunity to take comb or chunk honey. My very small swarm of honey bees have already filled 7 of 15 frames and are making very good use of the space. I will personally try not to pull the frames apart as one very interesting aspect is seeing them fill all spaces with honey comb.
    Wintering - The hive is well insulated, more than most of my Langstroth style hives. This hive will remain on deck throughout the year sheltered by a roof.
    Honey Harvest - When they finish filling all of the frames, I will harvest only those frames that are opposite from the entrance, and replace them with the extra frames/foundation provided. I plan to make sure they always have empty frames to fill .
    No Lifting - As with all horizontal hives, there is no lifting of heavy honey supers. You will be removing the cover and then the transparent inner cover. After that you'll be removing individual frames as needed, or inspecting the frame faces for overall evaluation of hive health.
    Burr and Brace comb is going to be attached to the interior surface of the transparent observation window. You will have to peel off the inner transparent layer and clean or replace it as necessary.
    Placement - I recommend that this hive be placed in a shaded/sheltered location where direct, mid-day sunlight will not hit the hive when opened for inspection. I also recommend that it be placed so the landing board faces south or south-east for winter sun exposure. I suggest that you place this hive on a stable surface at a height that is comfortable for viewing. You can gather and sit next to the hive on every side but the entrance side. The bees come and go without interruption while you enjoy their interior activities, their sounds, and the wonderful scent of bee-bread and honey.
    I personally enjoy having many different hive designs and configurations here at The Way To Bee, this way I can share about each hive's traits and features that benefit the bees as well as those who keep and manage them. It's a pleasure to have a Ivry-B hive added to my apiary. I would have selected the longer version.
    UPDATES - I will continue to share about this hive over the next year so my viewers can understand how well it holds up through the seasons, and how the bees do in that interesting cylindrical space.

    Oh my gosh, very beautiful, Fred! Well done.
    You had me laughing so hard talking about patience. Even though I can not have bees here due to a lack of forage for them, I should probably get a kit to learn patience, as I possess very little.

    Fred...very interesting hive. So do you plan on leaving the top on for the most part and do you plan on letting this hive swarm just like your other observation hive(s)? Is that entrance 3/8"", 1/2"", can a shrew get in? What about the skunks? will the bees be able to clean out the bottom? I wished you had installed the inside temp so that one could tell ow hot it is getting when you have the cover off and are viewing the bees with others. Are you gonna do tests on the glue that they sent? Could you put 2 of these 2 together and a queen excluder between them and make it an Ivy-horizontal hive with brood one side and honey on the other? How would you extract honey from these frames? I could go on but I will resist the temptation!

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I plan to leave it covered other than when we check in on them in the late afternoon or early mornings. The entrance reducers are interchangeable and I'll be modifying one to block any mice or "shrews" from gaining entry == Well out of reach for skunks. Regarding that temp probe I didn't want the bees just glueing it to the bottom, and don't think there's much value in knowing the interior temp vs exterior temp, I can still put a probe in if I want to know more later on. I think most of the honey in this one will be for the bees this year, but in spring I'd have to pull remaining honey to prevent it from becoming bound when the flow hits. I will allow them to swarm otherwise. I don't have other hives to exchange frames with, so it puts me in the same position I am with the Layens Hives.

    I saw this on another video. Quite interesting hive. Not sure how long it will last in the weather, especially since here in the states. It's dry in the middle east. However the clay hive was used due to the clay being cool on the inside and warm on the outside during the hot weather. Same concept in homes in Arizona, New Mexico, California, parts of Colorado and Utah. While living in Arizona and New Mexico, I saw how the homes were built from the bottom up and it made alot of sense why they built them that way. Of course you go to Chaco Canyon, and Canyon De Che and you can see the cliff dwellings how they were built or even the pueblos. I have to say very genius ways using clay.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eco-wood doesn't play well with laminated wood. So, I went with something else in this case. Regarding pest management, you could do an OAV by drilling a 1/4" hole into one of the solid entrance reducers as they are interchangeable.

    That just seems like a solution looking for a problem. And seeing "the first 300" get a hundred and fifty bucks OFF, I can only guess that the price must be astronomical. Looks like an expensive novelty, but maybe that's the purpose.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure it's a solution to any problem. It's really presented as a novelty and another way to observe bees in another hive configuration. I'm sure they are likely to be expensive, and the beauty of that is for those wanting utility only this won't appeal to them at all. I personally enjoy the variation in design. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Fred, great assembly job and an interesting design but if they build burr comb to the lid how do you lift it off without pulling the frames with it, or get in there to cut out the honey and save the brood comb when they are stuck to the lid? not to take anything away there effort but it looks more like a novelty than a practical working hive, but with your testing i am sure we will find out. thanx for taking the time to help us learn more about beekeeping

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bees bumped in the wax foundation and buit cells on both sides with a center in the comb, but on one side of the wooden frames, if you look at the attachments on the clear window they are actually centering their comb between frames, but attaching to one side of each frame. When I open the hive and pull some frames, I'll explain that better.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's definitely not a production hive. Durability is yet to be seen. If you wanted to extract honey, you can uncap the comb and put it in one of the radial basket style extractors on alower rpm. Also, these activities and examples will be shared over the next year.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      These bees have never been fed, they find and found their own forage. Not sure what you mean by "insulation is a joke" this hive wintered perfectly with a full compliment of honey in spring remaining. It's not designed for comb to re removed and spun out. One of the strongest colonies in my apiary at the moment. Pulling the frames will not be easy, as they have connected it to the removable transparent layer. It's interesting. True, there is no bottom tray, the interior is as slick as a whistle.

    I was interested when you said it was based on an old world based design. I love history, this will be an interesting project to see thru as time progresses. You said the original design was made with unfired clay, I challenge a potter to make a fired glazed version of this same form. I'm not even sure of the R-value of pottery at different thicknesses', I think the heat the bees put off inside would be the determining factor really. 20 Years ago, I knew a potter with her own Kiln and if I would have helped with the forms, I bet I could have talked her into doing the experiment with me. It wasn't about mass production back then, it was more like family groups, and you did what you could for yours and bartered the excess if you had any for other things. Don't forget history, it tends to come back around from time to time to time, squared by who knows what number.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most kilns can't handle large objects, but I'm sure someone would fire individual pieces that would be assembled after. I think the originals were made of clay as it was a primary material along with brick and stone work. Inspiration can come from anything :)
