Hi, great video thanks. I am going to make a 10 x 10 gazebo. What is the angle/measurement you use on the compound mitre saw to make those jack studs sit flat or on the same plane?
It depends on the pitch of your roof. This gazebo is 25 degrees. So on our chop saw we set it at 25 degrees and tilt over at 45 degrees. If you gazebo is square or rectangular you always tilt to 45 and just match the other angle to your roof pitch and the jack rafters will sit nicely against the hips. One mistake is to get the angles the wrong way round. So a tip is to keep your timber flat on the saw bench. Even if you pick it up or turn it to mark the lengths and birds mouth put it back in the same orientation you had it and just slide it along to cut the tail of the rafters. Hope this helps!
Excellent, answered several questions i had for my garden project. Massive help 👍
Thanks so much Jack, really enjoyed the video. Beautiful illustrations. On the hip rafters how did you calculate the angle of the bevel cuts on top?
Thanks, the bevel is the same angle as the pitch of the hip rafter. So my hips are 18 degrees making the bevel 18 degrees
