As a tribute to Tom Petty since he passed I Won’t Back Down is played at UF football games between the end of 3rd and start of 4th quarter. Words cannot describe what it is like hearing 80,000+ people singing along with the song!
That's awesome. As a Bama fan, I am envious of that LOL! But I think you sold tour fanbase short; there are at least 95K in that stadium if not over a 100K!
Another great video. Thanks for raving about Into the Great Wide Open. Pulled it out and gave it a fresh listen. While not my favorite (Damn the Torpedoes is), this is such a great album. Top 3 for me.
Tom Petty is my all time favourite singer and songwriter. He had this cross over quality that is rare; he was accepted by pop fans as well as by hard rock fans, and everyone in between. The album I go back to least frequently has to be Let me up (I've had enough). I find it pretty lame with Tom Petty standards. The number one by far to me is Wildflowers. It is probably my favourite album of all time, a masterpiece. Tom Petty in my opinion made masterpiece albums over three decades which is rare. Take Damn the Torpedoes from the 70s, Full Moon Fever from the 80s, and Wildflowers from the 90s, and that is something very unique to achieve.
Hey Brendon! Happy Tuesday to ya. We are definitely on the same plane with Tom Petty, always loved the music of his produced by Jeff Lynne. So layered and rich sounding. Into the Great Wide Open is tough to beat, I especially love Learning To Fly. Wildflowers certainly ranks up there for me, as I got into him in the first place on that tour in ‘95 when my aunt took me to see him in Denver. I’m with you on Mojo, rarely pop that in the player. How about Echo? I feel like that one sometimes gets overlooked and may be somewhat underrated. What do you think of it?
Hi Brendan for me it’s wildflowers not a bad song on it and so many good memories listening to it when it came out and it’s always the album I think of the most and probably my all time favourite album. Into the great wide open comes next and always loved the last DJ . Love to see your full studio album ranking. Take care joe
Brendon - Hope you do more of these. Maybe have a panel and do it live makes it way more interesting and more albums talked about. Love all Tom Petty albums. Now that he is gone, these albums are even more special. Mike Campbell lead guitarist has 3 albums - Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs is a continuation of Tom Petty style music. I hope Mike is working on a 4th album. I recommend them highly. My choice for best album out of the four you discussed is Damn the Torpedoes album.
Always purchased every Tom Petty release...always a fan. When i was invited to a TP concert i was hesitant because I thought it might be a little boring... boy was I wrong!!!! Everyone singing along and the energy from the band was the best!!! Gone way too soon!
Wow this is very timely. I just picked up CD copies of Into The Great Wide Open and Damn the Torpedoes at a record store on Sunday! I picked up Into The Great Wide Open specifically based on your video of albums you always have in the car. I'm a big fan of Tom Petty as well as The Traveling Wilburys but never rounded out my collection of his LPs. I had the Greatest Hits album, Full Moon Fever, Wildflowers, and Hypnotic Eye. Looking to continue to add to my Tom Petty collection!
I didn’t care for Mojo or Mudcrutch. I love all the albums you chose for favorites. I think Full Moon Fever is the rare album that is solid top to bottom, no filler songs to skip. Also like She’s The One and Last DJ. “Jammin’ Me” is one of my favorite songs of all time. Thanks for your review.
MOJO is definitely a groove oriented album and I love going on a long drive with the album cranked on my car stereo. My favorite Tom Petty album is "Damn the Torpedoes" and I would recommend getting the 2 CD deluxe edition as the extra tracks are very strong. Also of interest, Jimmy Iovine produced this album as well as the Stevie Nicks solo album "Belladonna" and they are sonically similar and obviously also have the Tom Petty penned "Stop Dragging My Heart Around". Those two (2) albums can be seen as bookends to the end of the 70's/beginning of the 80's for these artists.
All good points here. I enjoyed the MOJO album alot. But I agree with the fact that there is the occasion filler song . But Pettys filler is better than most others best 😂. Great episode 👍
You forgot the 2 Mudcrutch albums. I'm fine about leaving the Traveling Wilburys album off because it's a super group and doesn't have Tom Petty as the sole singer. Mudcrutch may have Bernie Leadon's brother have some songs for where he's singing lead, but for the history of Tom Petty, Mudcrutch came before the Heartbreakers, so I like to have Mudcrutch a part of his individual discography. The Traveling Wilburys album may be a part of it on Wikipedia, I just don't see it like that, like I don't see The Highwaymen work be under Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, or Willie Nelson's individual works.
Big fan of Into The Great Wide Open but it doesn't quite make my top three, which are: 1. Long After Dark 2. Mudcrutch - S/T 3. Full Moon Fever If Mudcrutch doesn't count, then I'll replace it with Hard Promises. Least Faves: 1. Southern Accents 2. Mojo 3. Debut They all have some great songs but also others that I don't like at all.
That one has really grown on me in recent years. But I also like it because it has the least amount of hits and none of the songs made the Greatest Hits compilation. So nothing on the album is worn out.
@@BrendonSnyder The only song on the album that did get considerable airplay was "You're Jamming Me" that he co-wrote with Bob Dylan and I DO really like that song. I also love the first two (2) albums as they didn't get a ton of airplay when they were originally released (Breakdown & American Girl got some) but my favorite TP song is "Listen to her Heart" and that song just freakin' ROCKS!!!
My favorite is Wildflowers made even better remastered with all the rest & for me there is no Album that has any filler there all great from start to finish. My least favorite is Echo it has good songs on it just get played as much as the others. I also love the 2 Mudcruch Albums along with the Traveling Wilburys as well & their box set Live at the Filmore East.
Just because Rock sprung from Blues doesn’t mean Rock sounds like Blues. They’re very different forms of music. I simply don’t like Blues. I also don’t like Rhythm & Blues, and Soul which also inspired Rock. Rock has moved way beyond the Blues banner. Rock has also spawned a lot of other kinds of music. So do I also have to like all of the types of music that Rock has influenced too? I don’t feel like I do. I just like what I like.
To the guy who was gleeful in saying he hated Tom Petty: You saw the title of the thread here that the OP was ranking Tom Petty albums. Coming on here and ragging on Tom and how you hate his voice was just you showing your arse for it's own sake. It was like going to a Tom Petty fan page and ragging on him to their fans. I don't care much for the Grateful Dead but I'd never come on here to sully the band if someone was ranking their albums. I would not even do that to Michael Bolton!
Maybe I got distracted but what about highway companion ? I like MOjo a lot !!! because it has that blues vibe. Full moon fever is the classic, there was a time where free fallin' was everywhere !!.. It's a supergroup but because he was in it.. what do you think of the travelin' wilburys ?
ITGWO is solid but I played it to death when came out so I never really need to hear it again. Hard Promises is always a welcome listen for me. Let Me Up also. Those are his best albums.
I really like Mojo. I think that Highway Companion is his worst album. Altough the opening track on that is really good. :) But the list of his best records is correct. Possibly you should have added Hard Promises as well.
I almost went with Highway Companion as well for Worst. But that still sounds like a Tom Petty album whereas IMO Mojo sounds least like a Petty album and therefore makes it my least favorite.
Wildflowers is one of my least favorites. Some really good tracks, and some BORING trash like "You Dont Know How it Feels". I feel like they lost something when they fired Stan Lynch
I’m not familiar with EVERY album but I know Debut- Wildflowers. Favorites Into The Great Wide Open Damn The Torpedoes Wildflowers Full Moon Fever Hard Promises Absolute Favorite Long After Dark Worst You’re Gonna Get It Southern Accents Absolute Worst Let Me Up I’ve Had Enogh
Yeah there are a lot of people who like Mojo. But if you don’t think it’s his worst, then which Petty album would you select in place of Mojo as his worst?
I know what you mean about Echo. It’s an album I didn’t really like at the time and still can’t stand Free Girl Now. But the song Room At The Top is one of his greatest songs ever.
I'm shocked that YOU don't like blues music a person like yourself who listens to mostly ROCK(weather it be punk, metal, prog or even classic rock which I listen to) should know that rock music evolved from the BLUES it won't kill you every once in a while to play a HOWLIN' WOLF record listen to the man's voice,I mean, c'mon MUDDY WATERS ain't that bad either just saying,by the way, MOJO is my favorite album as well as their debut record from '76 I know you're entitled to your opinion and I respect that but in my case,MOJO is a decent record.
Just because Blues may have influenced the development of Rock does not mean I need to enjoy it. The Rock and Metal music I listen to does not sound like the Blues by this point. It’s evolved way beyond sounding anything like Howlin Wolf or Muddy Waters. It’s why Slash’s new Blues album holds no interest for me either. Can’t do it and don’t feel like I need to simply because it’s part of the history of Rock. That’s like saying I have to like all of the music that Rock has influenced. No Thank You. 👍
@@BrendonSnyder I would agree that listening to Howlin' Wolf might convert anyone who is not a big fan of the blues just because of his voice the way Johnny Cash might convert those who would not ordinarily listen to country. Heck, they both worked at Sun Records. But, Brendan has heard it enough to know he's not into it. I myself try to appreciate it and respect it even though it's never a go to. Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry or Them and The Animals are what I really dig and I appreciate the influence the blues had on them! MOJO is the one Petty album I've never bought; I need to give it a chance.
Mojo is my favorite album with Tom Petty. The Blues is why I like this album

There are NO filler tracks on Full Moon Fever or Wild Flowers! The self titled debut album is the best one, all tracks are great.
Glad to hear they’re both so good for you
For me, Damn The Torpedos & Full Moon Fever are my 2 absolute favorites of his entire catalog!!

Really need to get hold of some of these albums and give them a go.
I highly recommend it!

Huge Pretty fan here…
Best - Hard Promises (All killer no filler and Stevie to boot)
Least - The Last DJ
Best..." Hard Promises"
Worst..." Along After Dark "
I almost include Long After Dark as one of the contenders for Best Album. For me it’s a go to album.
I'm trying to get into Head East, what were the albums you just picked up. Thanks for all you do. Very interesting. ✌🏻
I recommend starting with the debut called Flat As A Pancake which is readily available and has their biggest hit on it.
Thanks
