  • It should be up there, right?
This is my first Unlucky Morpheus song and a high bar has been set. We should probably throw the bar away because I don't know how this one can be outdone.
Drummer? Savage. Violinist? Shredding. Guitar solos? Dueling. Fuki? Fuki. This is about as metal as it gets.

This is a masterpiece, I have never heard other bands do it so perfect before this song, except for some drum parts and lyrics, the guitar, bass, violin and vocal melody is 100% backwards. And Unlucky Morpheus is a very special band, their music includes speed metal, neo-classical, melodic death, metalcore and hard rock etc. I recommend 《angreifer》 live and 《black pentagram》 live to you🤘🏻🔥

Jill is a genius to say the least. Every cell in her is made of music. If you want to know more about her, I recommend "[Cover] Dream Theater - The Dance of Eternity (Violin Cover)" or "[Cover] Yngwie Malmsteen - Far Beyond The Sun (Violin Cover)".
UM's recommended songs are [Official Live Video] Unlucky Morpheus - "Black Pentagram" or [Official Video] Unlucky Morpheus - "The Black Death Mansion Murders"

Fuyuki still my #1 metal singer from Japan also Fumiya san my #1 drummer. Unlucky Morpheus (Ankimo) very underrated band.
This song is a masterpiece of art!

Technically it's only the stringed instruments where the parts are completely reversed, the drums are different & I think there's some modifications to Fuki's vocal melodies, as well as changing the lyrics; not that it makes things any less impressive from a compositional perspective. Also with the video, the blue tinted close-ups of Fuki in Cadaver are her singing vocal lines from the second songs in reverse, so during Revadac they are the only bits of the video playing the right way round. They have performed the two songs back-to-back live on several occasions.
Unlucky Morpheus (aka. Ankimo) was founded in '08 by Fuki & Shiren (guitarist with the red headless Strandberg guitar, the tuners are built into the bridge) originally as an anisong cover project, then morphed into a Touhou Project doujin band, which then turned into a full time originals group with the current lineup solidifying around 2015-16. By choice they've never been signed to a label and are completely independent.
As well as guitar Shiren sometimes plays piano, trumpet & even harmonica onstage with Ankimo. He also does growls, though the most recent album Evolution doesn't feature any (they apparently recorded a death metal album with no clean vocals or Fuki at the same time, but only one track has been released as an MV) and was was part of the original studio proto-Kami Band for Babymetal back in 2012 before their first album.
The other guitarist, Jinya, is the youngest member of the band and in someways sorta their Angie, as Shiren originally knew him when he was still in high school. He usually plays seven & eight string guitars, mostly ESPs. Jill the violinist started playing at age three and is classically trained (though she originally started via the Suzuki Method, same as pianist Hiromi Uehara), having graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts & won several international competitions for her playing; in additional to Ankimo she's in demand as a session musician, plays in several other projects and sometimes still guests as a soloist with string quartets and orchestras. You get to hear more of Jill & Shinya's lead playing highlighted in Quadratum, the instrumental sub-unit of the band without Fuki & Shiren, which released an EP/mini album of classic hard rock/metal covers in 2021.
The rhythm section consists of Ogawa Hiroyuki on bass, whose background is in funk and jazz and Fumiya on drums, who is an absolute monster, having previously also played with Galneryus; he currently has a tribute band for X-Japan where is doing both the keys & drums as their Yoshiki.
In terms of other songs to try, something much more simple structurally would be 'Welcome to Valhalla' that has an infectious melodic hook and a very nice crunchy bass; you can't go wrong with any of the MVs from the last few years though. All their official live videos from 2017 onwards are pretty good mix-wise, I have a soft spot for " 'M' Revolution" from "XIII" Live at Toyosu PIT, as they all look to be having a great time and the guitar/violin balance is perfect.

Ankimo are a amazing band. Shiren (red guitar) is a brilliant songwriter/guitarist and original founder with Fuki. Recommend checking out "Unending Sorceress" "M Anthem" "Tower of Blood (live)." Something else with live strings? Check out Galneryus' "Angel of Salvation" which is an original song of theirs that incorporates parts of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D including the main guitar solo by SYU. Brilliant stuff.

    Bonkers :P
If you're into classical/neo-classical though, the technical term for this stuff is 'cancrizans', a lot of classical composers used it for parts, this is however the only example I know of (except for twelve-tone music...) where it encompasses the entire song.
The entire idea came about after reading about a swiss firm turning the ashes of dead people into diamonds. So the song is about a person becoming said diamond, and the second part is backwards, so the return from death. Great stuff. Plus, Jill is always a treat :)

I was fortunate to see them live at Shinjuku Blaze earlier this year and during their amazing over 2 hour set they performed Cadaver/Redavac...it was a sight to behold. Unlucky Morpheus are a group of virtuoso musicians with the fantastic voice of Fuki creating perfect music.

Unlucky Morpheus are absolutely magical. I can't add anything that hasn't already been said. However I note that UM have done a number of songs that are very long compared to the standard 3 minute single we hear often. Japanese bands tend to produce longer tracks in the range of between 4 and 6 minutes. It is far harder to write a 6 minute song than a 3 minute song.

They've done this live in concert before too. It was epic. Unfortunately, the video seems to have disappeared from TH-cam, but I found it before on Facebook.

Also in the 1st half of the clip, her mouth movement is off with the song but finally in sync on the 2nd half when the video is reversed. No idea why they add that detail when i'm sure barely anyone noticed it.

total Mozart shit. there's an "inverse" version on YT which proves "REVADAC" is "CADAVER" played backwards.
