I have this exact problem and I was sure someone had to do something like this before. Buying a whole keyboard just for a key? Ugh. Too expensive. Thank you! Now I'm sure this is possible!

Great idea that I never thought about this before, as I work with electronics and laptos I am just at the moment trying out the same idea on a broken "F1" key/hinge on a small netbook Toshiba nb200. Ill let you know my results later on I have to let the white silicone cure for a day I guess, ill update you later this idea with silicone is really good in theory you should be able to use two component silicone too. Then I shall let the uv light cure this for a little while.

So a little update if anyone else is trying this do not use "odor free silicone" like 704 that comes in multiple colors, I did not have any fast curing white attic acid based at the time of my first attempt. And then I bought a small tube of fast setting white silicone but I chose to glue the part down in the cap, first I sanded the cap flat inside and I took a dab of "B 7000"in the bottom then smear it out with your finger top and stick the key down on the most flat surface press it down and wait 1-2min. Then mix a spray botte with detergent and water and spray a few times into the cap blow the worst away, then I added the silicone, and the piece is held down in place and you can force the silicone down into all the areas you want. I failed when gluing it at first because I got a small "glob" of glue below one of the hinge pins, so inspect that you do not have glue where you dont want it I am now waiting for my third attempt and the scissor clips I am attempting are small 5x6mm I am not giving up until i get this to work!

I have a good hinge but the metals pins which holds the hinge in place are broken on my logitech k470 keyboard, the Ctrl key.

can i use epoxy resin instead?

Hi Hendry. It depends - slow cure epoxy would work. Especially if you were very careful, or if you had a vacuum chamber to suck all the air bubbles out and ensure all the tiny gaps in the mould are properly filled. The reason i used UV resin is because of the ease of flow, lack of trapped air bubbles, and ease of setting. In truth, I did try with 5 minute epoxy but it did not make a very good cast. The UV resin gave a much better result. Especially with such a tiny hinge. If you were planning on casting a bigger hinge than the MX keys hinge, it would be much easier. I thought there'd be a simpler way to do it, I don't have all these tools and things.

The best options: contact keyboard manufacturer or search on ebay and alibaba.
