    They’re lowering the basement floor to create higher ceilings. Probably. Many times basements typically have about 7-8’. In larger homes it might go about 9’. Today’s millionaire wants all the ceilings to be at least 12’. One might also be excavating an existing basement in order to install heated floors. The temps underground stay stable to about 65° but when temps dip down to 35° or below in the winter the floors could get colder, too. Then there’s the possibility of installing a French drain. Don’t know why it’s called that but it keeps the outside of basement dry when it rains or snows. A basement is just another level of a house but extra space. So much can be done such as a dance floor, bowling alley, cigar room, etc.
