Rancho Palos Verdes dealing with landslide 'twice as deep' as what had been modeled, geologist says

- The city of Rancho Palos Verdes is dealing with more land movement from a larger slide plane than what was previously reported, the city's geologist said.
"What we've now confirmed with about 10 borings on the site, at least in the Portuguese Bend area, is that there is a landslide that's almost twice as deep as what had been modeled," said geologist Mike Phipps. READ MORE: abc7.com/post/...
If you don't shut the water off to the homes, the pipes will break and the pressurized water will create sink holes, I used to own a home in RPV.. I loved living there and miss the ocean views. This ground movement has been known about for decades. I don't mean to be callus and my heart goes out to the people but this has been coming for a long time. I'm shocked they have not already shut off the water to the area already. Electric,.water and gas pipes have got to shut off. A broken water main or water pipes to the homes will only create a sink hole and make things worse.
.
I recognize we're talking about people's homes but Denial and temporary band aid fixes are just delaying people from moving on IMHO.
I hadn’t considered water pipes bursting and leading sinkholes. Thank you for adding your insight. Very informative. It is such a shame. Such a beautiful area!

Move
What is your take on the looming mega earthquake that seismologists are forecasting for so cal?
Because in a way, we have "known" this for a long time as well.
So should we move? It's just a difficult situation.
Yes the people may have "known", but can't really fault them for the situation. (Not saying that's what you're doing)
I don't live in Palos Verdes but I am sympathetic towards them.
And I know not to make light of their misfortune, because Karma has a funny way of making you humble, and the REST of us in so cal can suffer a massive earthquake the very next day.
The tribes have known about this for thousands of years, the explorers have known about this for hundreds of years, the settlers have known about this for scores of years, and the City Council knows nothing of this.
they have not taken a geology course or know its history
Not the city's problem.
They are only looking at the cities "Take" on the property taxes and what revenue will be lost towards their pensions.
Electricity is the least of the infrastructure problems. Water and sewer, anyone? You can make electricity anywhere, but if you do not have water for domestic purposes and a sanitary way to get rid of waste, you cannot live there.
There's no hope of saving anything when the ground is moving 3-4' per month. Just pack it up...and get out while you can.
Exactly. The whole area needs to be condemned, like right now. The ground could give way at any time now. Get the people out of there before they lose their lives.
Homes shouldn't be built in many hilly areas in LA county. Wait till the rains hit again.
Stop the Wild Fires
no insurance company would come back
Many homes should not be built in high risk areas, but if the esthetics, the view the weather etc. are enticing enough people with enough money flaunt nature's incredible forces and build, and then after several hurricanes or floods they still rebuild in the same spot. Corpus Christi, Texas comes to mind as well as the Outer Banks or the keys on the east coast. Weather be damned and high risk insurance does not deter them.
ask God if it's built on stone not sand
@@ReynaldoAba-h9e God is si busy with stupid Pluto freezing his b... of!

You cannot stop this. Be like puttinng a cork in a volcano 😂🤣🤪
The mayor and city council are working on a solution? You'd have a much better rate of success asking The Three stooges to cure cancer
The corrupt politicians and city planners who approved these developments decades ago, despite every expert telling them that this would happen, should be jailed
Nobody is going to jail. Everyone is bought out
Next step? Condemn every home and relocate the people.
Yes have insurance write them a check and take the loss
It’s the only solution. The hillside’s joining the sea!
Their insurance is probably funded by taxpayers.
@@TehL33tNubz Their insurance doesn't cover for "earth movement".
The "check" came out from us.
Janice Hahn cut a massive check for them, and I think they also have declared emergency and asked for FEDERAL funding.
So it's not the insurance paying them, it's us.
@@TehL33tNubz Insurance won't cover this. It's an ongoing problem. Insurance doesn't cover it. I believe that is why so many people are staying in their homes. They can't afford to move. Their homes are worthless. Sad for the homeowners.
Poor rich people 😢
Rolling Hills...🤔 estates...👀...
Seriously, those homes just need to be abandoned. I don't understand why they are bothering trying to save them. Sure, theses are expensive properties, but life is priceless. We don't mess around with that kind of stuff in Canada. The government condemns the house, demolishes it and pays a compensation package. The amount of ground movement that can be seen on those aerial shots clearly shows that the problem is extremely severe and simply cannot be ignored. That entire hill is going to slide down the next time it rains and there ain't no stopping it.
A friend of mine sold his property in that area back in the early 2000s ..... There are various underground springs being the culprit and the ever increasing movements like never before seen continues to do its thing .... They are attempting to put in so called steel beams to stabilize the foundations of some of those homes.... thinking either they're going to survive the next post rain season or sell the property is beyond me.... Very unfortunately, there home will be a total loss and no insurance covers such damage or loss ...Not only that, the land their homes are on will either disappear and or the state and local Gov will permanently condemn the area
jeez its a totally unstable area. count your losses and move on.
If there is any substantial rain this winter it’s over for these folks
Help stop the land movement! People come up with the dumbest ideas 😜😜😜😜
build beams down under to 1000 feet
They really do and the dumbest yell the loudest....
When your home was built on a water bed.
It shows how out of touch in regard to how things work a guy is when he thinks batteries will power 500 homes. If there is no grid power, how do the batteries get charged? If the grid is out, how does the battery power get to the homes? How do you stabilize massive battery banks when utility poles, water pipes, gas pipes, and homes cannot be stabilized? Guy is just tossing things out in an effort to seem on top of a situation that will not be won.
Er, micro grid? Batteries are easy to place - they come in seavan containers. But it's a total waste of breath. The homes need to be condemned.
Finally falling into the ocean? 🌊
thats great huh, tyical MAGA
no
Yup: tectonic movement builds them up, weather and gravity pull them back down. Humans are just along for the ride.
The real problem is when sewer breaks and poops starts coming out
just like in the movie 2012
The dark ages are coming back....
Everybody living on hills in California might want to move very very soon. Pay attention to the signs 😕
Again, the to see township allows permits to build in an unstable area.😮

They are waiting for a bailout from Saint Newsom
wtf? That’s a rich area. Have them help themselves.
@@ghostup101 they’re greedy and stingy !
Actually you’re wrong. They pay a lot of property taxes so they deserve to receive government help. If the government doesn’t help, they all will move and the economy of the town will collapse.

How dare "nature" is on the move and didn't ask first...
This area will be the new sunken city. Just drive to San Pedro and see what remains of that portion of San Pedro.
how sad this is over no insurance company covers this people's life savings gone but they also knew there was ground movement when they bought it. take the tax loss give it to the bank and move on
Such a beautiful area on the California Coast! Very sad....
This land movement is not a surprise. Other homes and public facilities slid away and crumbled in the area back in the 1950s, and back in 1991 I saw firsthand the rubble that remains. The main road into this area is constantly being patched and repaved because the land moves, and this has been going on for decades. I feel bad for the affected owners, but they have known about the problems for many years and threw the dice. Yes, the ocean views here are spectacular, but risking your home is not worth the view. The people who live here are not poor, and now they want the government to bail them out for their foolish choices. The and sliding cannot be stopped and trying to do so is pouring money down a rat hole.
If you remove the underground water, what happens as water is pumped out and then there will be a large empty hole, cavern, won't that cause more calapasing or landslides or sinking of land to fill in that void?
home insurance companies would never visit and insure this place for ever
I'll pray for rain

Hahaha the fact they think they can stop the land movement! Mother Nature gonna do what she need to!
Every homeowner needs to do what the church is doing and if they can't. Your best bet is to come to grips with the fact that you will lose your home, and you need to focus finding a new home elsewhere. There is nothing mankind can do to control mother nature at this magnitude. The big question should be: Who is going to be responsible for cleaning up the debris and rubble left over from hundreds if not thousands of homes being destroyed.
It’s time for those folks to head to the IE.
We don't want them let them stay in LA county
So they are switching and not moving? 😅
Better Call Saul
Give it up! The city knew decades ago about the land movement there. They didn't have any problems collecting taxes. City engineers who approved construction projects there should be jailed!
State taxpayers should not be on the hook for this engineering blunder.
That’s what you get when you build on the side of a mountain
What to do is easy - condemn all the homes and tell residents tough luck
The new edition of sunken city smh same way how the first chunk of the neighborhood collapsed and created whst we know now days as "sunken city" literally was fhe same situation that happened. History always repeats itself
