Rancho Palos Verdes dealing with landslide 'twice as deep' as what had been modeled, geologist says

  • The city of Rancho Palos Verdes is dealing with more land movement from a larger slide plane than what was previously reported, the city's geologist said.
"What we've now confirmed with about 10 borings on the site, at least in the Portuguese Bend area, is that there is a landslide that's almost twice as deep as what had been modeled," said geologist Mike Phipps. READ MORE: abc7.com/post/...

If you don't shut the water off to the homes, the pipes will break and the pressurized water will create sink holes, I used to own a home in RPV.. I loved living there and miss the ocean views. This ground movement has been known about for decades. I don't mean to be callus and my heart goes out to the people but this has been coming for a long time. I'm shocked they have not already shut off the water to the area already. Electric,.water and gas pipes have got to shut off. A broken water main or water pipes to the homes will only create a sink hole and make things worse.
    .
I recognize we're talking about people's homes but Denial and temporary band aid fixes are just delaying people from moving on IMHO.

What is your take on the looming mega earthquake that seismologists are forecasting for so cal?
Because in a way, we have "known" this for a long time as well.
So should we move? It's just a difficult situation.
Yes the people may have "known", but can't really fault them for the situation. (Not saying that's what you're doing)
I don't live in Palos Verdes but I am sympathetic towards them.
And I know not to make light of their misfortune, because Karma has a funny way of making you humble, and the REST of us in so cal can suffer a massive earthquake the very next day.

Seriously, those homes just need to be abandoned. I don't understand why they are bothering trying to save them. Sure, theses are expensive properties, but life is priceless. We don't mess around with that kind of stuff in Canada. The government condemns the house, demolishes it and pays a compensation package. The amount of ground movement that can be seen on those aerial shots clearly shows that the problem is extremely severe and simply cannot be ignored. That entire hill is going to slide down the next time it rains and there ain't no stopping it.

A friend of mine sold his property in that area back in the early 2000s ..... There are various underground springs being the culprit and the ever increasing movements like never before seen continues to do its thing .... They are attempting to put in so called steel beams to stabilize the foundations of some of those homes.... thinking either they're going to survive the next post rain season or sell the property is beyond me.... Very unfortunately, there home will be a total loss and no insurance covers such damage or loss ...Not only that, the land their homes are on will either disappear and or the state and local Gov will permanently condemn the area

If the grid is out, how does the battery power get to the homes? How do you stabilize massive battery banks when utility poles, water pipes, gas pipes, and homes cannot be stabilized? This land movement is not a surprise. Other homes and public facilities slid away and crumbled in the area back in the 1950s, and back in 1991 I saw firsthand the rubble that remains. The main road into this area is constantly being patched and repaved because the land moves, and this has been going on for decades. I feel bad for the affected owners, but they have known about the problems for many years and threw the dice. Yes, the ocean views here are spectacular, but risking your home is not worth the view. The people who live here are not poor, and now they want the government to bail them out for their foolish choices. The and sliding cannot be stopped and trying to do so is pouring money down a rat hole.

Your best bet is to come to grips with the fact that you will lose your home, and you need to focus finding a new home elsewhere. There is nothing mankind can do to control mother nature at this magnitude. The big question should be: Who is going to be responsible for cleaning up the debris and rubble left over from hundreds if not thousands of homes being destroyed.
