One point the author is missing, the Irish, Polish, Germans, and Jews were also treated awful, not welcomed when they came to the states. My great grandparents came over from Holland in the late 1800’s and had to bury two of their children who passed away at sea. Please don’t overlook their important stories as well. It wasn’t a cake walk for many immigrants, my great grandparents never spoke English and were poor.

We should have evolved from that type of mistreatment against humans by now!

      And? What. You’re just generalizing.
Humanity has been different factions wishing for different things.
Why should this be a far cry from contemporary time?

I think you’re incorrect. America 🇺🇸 represents when everyone is United. American culture you see today is an influence of many. We shall, not fail.

My grandma was from Ireland during the Colorado gold rush days. She was the daughter of a miner. She told me great stories.

This has been my argument against people in this country that have the audacity to call someone else an immigrant, to make them feel unwelcome & to say that they need to come into this country "legally!"
    Did yours?
    I don't think so!
I love how some who call themselves "Americans", seem to have amnesia when it comes to their own family history & immigration story!
First, Anyone who isn't Native to this country is an Immigrant.
With the exception of the millions of African slaves that were forced to come here!
Secondly, Just because your family came here on a boat 50 years before someone else's doesn't make you more of an American than the next person!
Lastly, If your Forefathers intended this to be a "Whites Only" country then they should have built it by themselves!
Instead Millions of African Slaves & other Immigrants built this country & made it what it is today!
If it weren't for them this country would not be the richest most powerful country on earth!
This country was built on the backs of Slaves & Immigrants of whom have never been given proper recognition for the contributions & sacrifices they've made for this country & for their future descendants!

One group desperately wanted to be Americans. The other group just wants to work here. Does anyone who lives in a city actually stop and think, oh boy, wouldn’t it be great if more people lived here. Did mass immigration make anything better?

The Professor is rammed and she assumes it was because she is a so called “Chinese American “, but that’s in assumption, so what it has to do with this discussion is irrelevant. The guy with Mexican parents who are undocumented has to realize that this is not 1920, and what went on in Ellis Island can not happen today. His family would be The first to admit it.

The 1900’s & today are completely different time periods. The Italians, irish & polish came here & built the entire US east coast & midwest. & they didn’t do much crime. We don’t need to increase the US population with foreign workers. Americans need good paying jobs in the US. If foreign workers come in the US, they will take away jobs

@Tony Dokoupil , you are not a philosopher, nor a cultural analyst, and definitely not a high caliber intellectual .... your a news caster that should remember to get and stick to the facts. People don’t not care about you opinions or views about immigration and culture.

Its called History & Facts deal with it!
The History of America has been covered up &
      "White Washed" for long enough!
If you can't handle the truth about this country's history that's your problem but continuing to live in denial won't change it!

@@spljah75 To remain racist in the US it requires you to be totally oblivious to history. They think that historical events can be "opinions" despite historical documents, published works, and records from previous generations. You can tell 99% of right wingers have never written a bibliography in their lives regarding historical thesis.
