- Over the last few months, Streamlight has been quietly stepping up the output on a number of their weaponlights. The latest model to get this treatment is the TLR-7; the new TLR-7 HL-X is a dual-fuel version of Streamlight's weaponlight for compact handguns, and has more lumens and candela than the previous version. @Hoplopfheil stopped by the Streamlight booth at NRAAM 2024 to check out their new crop of lights.

It's pretty funny how easy it is to tell that Hop actually gives half a fuck about specific booths lmfao
Kudos to Stream light for continually pushing the envelope with their weapon lights.
And not charging an arm and a leg just because you know the name of their company
Half (at least) of the envelope pushing credit should go to the companies making these new high output small emitters. This looks like it might be the Nitelab UHi20 or one of its siblings

How? The Holosun PID HC beats every pistol light by miles in terms of cost/performance. The only thing they have worth buying is the HL-X/HL-X Pro, but they refuse to change their tailcaps to take standard Crane plugs without rattling around in the jack.

30 min runtime at the high setting, 1 hr at the lower setting FYI.
I guess the reason is because the user would momentarily use it for the identification.
That's 1,000 lumens @ 22,000 candela for 30min on high (default), or 500 lumens @ 11,000 candela for 1 hour on low w/ the SL-B9 rechargeable battery. If you run a CR123A, you're only getting the low setting for 1.5 hours of runtime. Also, if you have an rm2 and a tlr7a or tlr7 sub, you can put the rm2's HPL head on the 7a/7 sub for that bump in candela if you don't feel like buying the x since I've seen some places selling them for between 170 and 200 bones. No idea if the SL-B9 battery is compatible with the 7a/7 sub.
@@charlie-tangomotors2516Werkz Holsters interviewed Streamlight as well and when asked the rep said you would not get the full output swapping just the head onto a 7X body. I do not believe you can use the new battery in the 7A.

Most interesting video so far. Really love what Streamlight is doing.
Gotta give it up for Streamlight, they make good stuff.
I would like a hop rundown of the Streamlight weapon lights. They have quite a few products, and it’s not clear from their website what the pros and cons of each light is.
If they did this large of an increase in output with the TLR7, I'm curious to know what the TLR1 body can put out with a re-design
They've already jumped from 300 to 800 and now 1000 (maybe another stop between 300 & 800).
Remember they also make the big head TLR-1HPL if you want to reach out an extra 200 meters (probably limited to a long gun, unless you're a kydex master LOL).

will we be able to just buy the new reflector to put on the tlr7's or only works with this new 7?
I appreciate Hop asking questions that actually matter.
Wish hop would of asked about holster compatibility. Anyone know if this works with existing tlr 7 holsters?

Can't wait to see it in the fence and island
And here I just bought a Foxtrot2r since it was brighter than my TLR-7A and locked myself out of 80% of the holster market.
Seems like werkz is your only option
@@tizben Most holster makers that do accommodate that light only do so if the gun is a P320 or P365 (Werkz being one of them). If I want one for a P-10 C, for example, Odin, Blackpoint, Falco, and Redhill are the only ones I've found. Odin seems like the only one that has decent options (like tuckable clips), but I've heard mixed reviews on the quality.
If you’re going to give a rechargeable option then just allow for charging externally. While I’m not an Olight fan, their charge system is really handy. Unscrewing the front to then take the battery out, to then plug the battery into a little usb charger just seems gimmicky.
Plugging my gun in seems gimmicky too.
@@TommyTombstone Between the choice of two gimmicks, tell us you'd choose the less convenient one.
@@Omniverse0 I'll choose whichever one gives me better output, reliability, and runtime. I have to pull the batteries from my handhelds and rifle lights to juice them up, too. Don't become a slave to convenience.
The new pl mini 3 comes with two batteries and latches in from the bottom I think. Will see how it works when it comes in on Tuesday or Wednesday.
@@mastermeow1582 yeah but it's a nOLight, so who cares?
Wondering if it’ll affect holster compatibility - it doesn’t look *that* much longer than the old tlr7, but given lots of kydex holsters index on the light… Also the snob in me likes that the old tlr7 sat flush with the end of the muzzle in most g19 sized guns

So can I just buy the rechargable for my old tlr1?
Fenix has had USB rechargeable cr123s for years now
Might damage the internal circuitry as rechargeable batteries might have slight voltage variations outside of the lights specifications. I saw a comment were someone reached out to a streamlight rep and asked about using their rechargeable batteries on a TLR-7A and the rep confirmed it would damage the unit, however they didn’t specify if that was with a rechargeable CR123 or their proprietary SL-B9 rechargeable battery

Streamlight > Surefire.
Made in PA baby!!!
What? All my Streamlights were made in China. TLR1, 1HL, 3, 7, 7A, and 9. I still prefer the 1HL output to my X300s, but let's not get carried away.
I prefer streamlight too…but they’re made in China.
They're made in China my guy. That's why they're half the price of SureFire and ModLite.
Hop, you forgot to ask if it's just the head replacement/bezel or if there is different circuitry in those new lights to help produce the higher candela/lumen.
Yes, it's new circuitry as well. Putting the HLX head on a non-HLX unit will not yield the "high mode" output. Confirmed by SL when interviewed by Werkz Holsters.
@@TommyTombstone Thanks Tommy. I knew before asking, but wanted to let Hop know he needs to be a bit more thorough, when asking questions of the reps. Just in case people don't or didn't know to see it on the Werkz channel/video. Excellent response though, thanks!
If i got a tlr 1 can i buy stuff aftermarket to make it an HL? Or x ?
You can use rechargeable batteries with up to 3.7v for higher output. Will lower your led life. But don't know by how much
@@tizbenprobably not enough to matter. The battery you're thinking of is a 16340.
Can you just get the new head assembly and perchance throw it on a tlr8a since they share the same body?
Yes. Output won't be as high but is still improved. I tried the HLX head on my TLR7a and it's good enough I pre-ordered one of the heads for it.

The new HLs put out 22k candela but idk what you consider high candela
@@bubbalawrence1The X300T is putting out 69k. So something more like that, but with the TLR1 switches and price point.
20k candela is getting to be the minimum standard for a defensive handheld, and soon to be the new minimum for WMLs as well.
I have a relatively small handheld that's pushing 80k.
@@TommyTombstonethank you
They probably aren’t, but it would be cool if they release the heads as a stand alone purchase so we could upgrade our regular tlr7s without having to buy the entire light.
I believe they updated the electronics in the new light and the old body won’t support the new head. Job security I guess…🤷🏼♂️🙄
Do I need a new holster?
Depends if the bottom is open or not. Some holsters crimp the lower edge in on both sides, some don't.
Not if you have a heat gun 😊
Will it be possible to just buy the new HL head for those who already own the TLR 7?
The head is said to be the same as the updated RM1. Battery Junction has a pre-order for it already as a replacement part for the RM1.
This should be the correct part. No guarantee on actual white output with whichever battery you choose.
I'm not sure why the Streamlight rechargeable 123 would not work in the TLR7A. If not, a different brand rechargeable 123 would fit.

It looks like they sell the head separately for the RM1/2, which use the same head as the 7. You won't be able to use the rechargeable battery but you should be able to get whatever higher output the cr123a can support.
@@EisernkreuzWhere are you seeing the separate heads? I've been looking everywhere.
Yes, but they're not in stock yet
@@freneticfanatic What's your source on that? I saw a couple of websites who were taking preorders for HPL heads issue refunds and close the listings.
When will malkoff make a head for the TLRs
Asking the real questions here
Probably not anytime soon. Their specialty is the drop in conversions for handhelds, the WML heads were I believe at the request of Arisaka.
You didn't ask if it was holster compatible with the old models.
It's not directly compatible unless the holster is open ended at the diameter of the light head, or you're willing to modify it with heat or a Dremel. The head is the same diameter but longer, the body is the same.
Well... take my money
I want that dummy rubber ar
We used to call them 'Rubber Duckies'. The blue versions are size-correct, but not weight correct (so they're far cheaper). The red versions are weight-correct and significantly more expensive.
This is for Glock 17 and 19 and similar, not the micro compact 43x and 48 and similar, according to their website.
The 7sub x-hl will be out soon enough
Make a RM2 HL-X that takes 18650's and doesn't shut off under recoil and I'll buy five of them.
What the InForce should have been.
I agree, 1k lumens and 22k candela with that style of switch and a fair amount of runtime could be a hard budget slim option to beat (at RM2 prices). It would be a pretty capable home defense or PCC light.
The new InForce 2x CR123 Gen 3 is pushing just about that at the same price, but they have a lot of trust to win back.
Hops slenderman esq figure really comes out next to a normal height person.

@@Velkin999 Ahhh gotcha. I wish you the best of luck finding that light, brother, I know your pain haha.
I have a tlr6 hl for Glock 43x. They increased lumens which cut battery time by 2/3rds. You have 20 minutes run time on one battery. Their answer to this was to recommend carrying multiple batteries just fyi. 3 for 1hr run time.

@Eisernkreuz he's talking about the older ones with upgrades. Take the Protac HL-X for example. Upgraded from 27k candela to 50k candela but still looks the same.

This light is slightly shorter that the end of a G17 slide.
The TLR-1HL is slightly shorter than a G34 slide.
Yeah but it's not wide like a TLR1HL
Tlr7a is flush with a 19, the 7xhl will be flush with a 17, the tlr1 is still longer than that, and wider.
The TLR7a is flush with a 19. The TLR 1 is flush with a 17. This light appears to be flush with a 17, but not twice as wide as the Glock.

TLR-1 (any variant) sticks out past the end of the G17 slide. It's essentially the same as the G34 length.
The new TLR-7 HPL will be just under G17 length. I actually held it in my hand at NRAAM less than one week ago and spoke with Streamlight representatives about it.
Wish they would design their lights with a small hump on the sides so IWB holster have good retention lockup areas. Maybe a concealed carry version just for iwb kydex holsters ?
All my TLR7 holsters click nicely. Is there really a need?
@@Eisernkreuzyeah, same here. Sounds more like an issue with whatever holster maker he’s going with rather than a design problem with the light itself.
@@Andrew_182 yeah most likely the holster maker. But it wouldn't hurt to have that added tension.
There's only a handful of holster makers and they make the majority of those holsters for Glocks with the rail lights and some M&Ps. If you carry anything else with a light forget it. You'll need a custom holster for almost what you paid for your pistol and that's too much.
My stream light sits in the night stand. It was a $100 not well spent.
My brother in Christ, allow me to help you out. The PhlSter Floodlight 2 indexes on the light itself, not the gun. It's compatible with the TLR1 or the X300. The Tier 1 Concealed MSP does the same thing.
Otherwise, there are hyper custom Kydex shops all over the country, just pick one. FalTech comes to mind.

As much as I like my Streamlights, my biggest criticism is they're like Glock... reliable but stagnant. I'm glad they're listening to user feedback and overhauling they're entire weapon light lineup.
When is Streamlight ever gonna lose the “Ring Of Bling”? I mean they already have their logo plastered on the side of it. Just seems like unnecessary cheese.

What exactly is much different about carrying a TLR7 in your kydex holster everyday as a normal EDC, and carrying a TLR-1 on a belt every day as a cop? Most cops train and use their guns far less than a typical gun enthusiast.
Edit: I somewhat understand if your argument is light output. Sure, the TLR 1 is going to have more distance.
The new 7x hpl is 1,000 lumens and 22k candela. The tlr1 hl is 1,000 L and 20k candela. You have old information that dose not apply
@@dylanholbrook6239 It's not about light output, it's about durability. One will break if dropped on concrete at shoulder length, the other won't.
@@mordant221 Show us some tests of that then. I’m not aware of any of Streamlights aluminum bodies WML’s being any less durable than the next. Even if it did give up 2% in durability as a consequence of being smaller and lighter with the same output I’m fine with that, and again, most non-cops are harder on their lights and pistols than cops are.
