We lost another member of the Highwaymen yesterday, September 28, 2024. Kris Kristofferson passed away at his home in Maui Hawaii. He Joins Johnny Cash and Wayland Jennings leaving only the great Willie Nelson to carry on the wonderful music talent we've all enjoyed throughout the years. These are great men with exceptional talent who live in our hearts and minds forever. RIP Kris, Johnny and Wayland and thanks for the memories!!

It's really amazing that so much talent and masterful songwriting, singing, and production can be combined into one 3-minute song, even if you were unaware that all four lead singers are legends in their own right, and already were by the mid-80s when this was released.

This song was played at my Papa’s funeral. He was a trucker all his life, and often said the likes of Willie and Johnny made his long days driving that little bit easier. When he passed of cancer in 2017, I couldn’t listen this song. Now I come here to listen to this song when I need to feel closer to him. One of the best masterpieces ever written.

Such a powerful message in one little sentence. I get it, it's part of our beliefs.
Bit still, it's a majestic writing, on the part of the writer. (Can't remember who wrote it now, but it wasn't the Highwaymen).
Not to take anything away from theor performance. Incredible. I get shivers each time I hear this, or watching it - I get memories,,emotional feelings about my late grandfather, rushing back.

Mine died in my arms at the age of 94 July 2nd 2024. He was the most intelligent and wisest man I knew. 2 days later I was napping on the couch at 10 am sleep deprived.
He came to me in my dream the house was as it really is and he was only in his shorts like he used to be while reading in the living room.
I remember it like it was so real I stammered “how you died” he hugged me and told me “it’s okay Keir everything’s okay”
Then I woke up but I wasn’t surprised or astounded I just accepted that everything is okay and life is how it should be.

Not happy or sad, don’t know what emotion that was but it was not an emotion I’ve felt before. Of course I take music very literal and analyze every last note sung. Every little idiosyncrasies the performer may have when saying the words. I don’t know what I do without TH-cam and being able to go back and watch these old videos. My 87yr old stepdad who just passed loved this song. Tough as nails old man who was born on a farm in 1933 , never graduated high school , served in the military and got a college degree , became a police officer and then started his own business and was a successful man. Taught me honor and respect and keeping your word. He didn’t take any shit but he made sure Shriners kids were taken care of.

This one is for Orio Palmer, Batallion 7 Chief of FDNY.
    I was a fire chief.
Into the Towers I did go.
And my fear I did not show,
We looked for survivors among the smoke and all the flames,
We refused to leave if someone still remained.
And there we stayed until the Towers fell to the ground.
    But I am still around.
Rest in peace, Chief Palmer. You are remembered.

Amen. That was a great eulogy, man. Brought tears to my eyes. All the rescue people that day, including ones who passed away that day or later from the poisonous air that lying officials claimed was safe to breathe; & the "lucky" ones who survived the horrors, but now have PTSD from that day, are heroes. I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart.

Couldn't agree more. My father listened to Johnny Cash all the time when I was growing up, and I've come to love his music myself. We had the immense honor of meeting Johnny and his beautiful wife when they did a concert in Colorado during my teen years. I'm grateful my mother was there to get a photo of us together. Just yesterday, at the ripe age of almost 50. I realized that this song being sung by some of the most outlaw of the country outlaws, is totally about the continuing existence of "ourselves". That the highway man, sailor, dam builder, and starship pilot are all the same entity. Although not knowing what it would be next, it knew it would be.
The last verse is so powerful.

RIP Kris. I was at our small town fest on Saturday. It was so hot, there was a parade, games, the bars were selling hot dogs and beer, and a local band was to play later that night. After the parade we sat around, watched the kids run and play, pretty much the whole town was in this 2 block span. It was the first street fest there after a 30 year break no one knew the exact reason for. The old owner of the sales barn wanted it revived, and so it was. It was he, who to our delight, drove his tractor into town with these big speakers on a trailer behind. While we waited for the local band to play later that eve, old man Varner and his crew played all the best country and folk songs. We were kept entertained as he walked around shaking hands and visiting with old friends. I can imagine how proud he must have felt that he could achieve this once lost tradition! The Highwayman was one of the songs that played, and I remember thinking, oh I love this song, what memories were in my head of my dad singing along. It was like an earworm all day, stuck in head on Sunday too, the "again and again and again" playing over and over. I was shocked to see today that Kris was gone. How was it that day I was with so many, singing, celebrating, reminiscing? How do these things get tied together, the day, the song and the death, a coincidence was it? I guess so, or not, but it's curious, sad too, and poignant for sure.

One of my best friends loved this song. He listened to it everyday. Last August he took his life do to depression. We played this song at his funeral. Not a dry eye in the building. He worked for the county highway for 40 years. During the winter we had to clean the roadways and he would always say a prayer over the radio for us. He ended the prayer Everytime with God always watches over the children and the highway men. Hearing this song brings him back to us. We miss you Jocko.

    I was a highwayman
Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five
    But I am still alive
    I was a sailor
I was born upon the tide
And with the sea I did abide
I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico
I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
    But I am living still
    I was a dam builder
Across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
    But I am still around
I'll always be around and around and around and around and around
    I fly a starship
    Across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
    But I will remain
And I'll be back again, and again and again and again and again
