I learned how to drive one of these beasts but without the height extension. At first it frightened the hell out of me, the sheer power of it. There was one job called "chucking up" which entailed throwing scrap high onto a pile of other scrap. The height was usually higher than the machine. The technique was difficult to learn as you were using pretty much every control on the joysticks and the pedals all at the same time. If you got it wrong you could end up with a ton of scrap metal heading straight back at you towards the cab. I then had to learn how to scrape the working areas around me free of debris using an old RSJ. You`d basically use it like a massive squeegee. I had to get the tine's in the correct place before I could start. The other lads would take the piss relentlessly until i learnt. I heard from an instructor that a person who can operate one of these machines would easily have the skill to fly a helicopter if taught. Not sure if that was true. Hats off to these chaps on the video. People dont realise how much skill is needed for these lads to operate them well. If you cannot operate them well then you dont operate them at all or else they could be deadly to the driver and anyone else in the vicinity. Have to have superb hand to eye coordination and patience.
