That's wrong, it was Aaron Burckhard. The correction was made in the booklet for the subsequent release Sliver: The Best of the Box.

It's just a really loud and hard h sound through compression, "h" is basically the sound of breathing, which creates a similar sound to "p", they both have a strong release of air, then in the studio that release went through a pop filter and fx, which he was doing at the top of his lungs, thus making a super similar sound, but still clearly "hey".

If you listen closely he recorded the vocals twice for the hey/pain scream. He technically says both at the same time. It’s not that noticeable but you can just faintly hear the p sound
It's just a really loud and hard h sound through compression, "h" is basically the sound of breathing, which creates a similar sound to "p", they both have a strong release of air, then in the studio that release went through a pop filter and fx, which he was doing at the top of his lungs, thus making a super similar sound, but still clearly "hey".

It says "Hey," not "Pain". I don't give a fuck what lyric sites say, or even what it said in the original booklet. The compilation this is on came out 10 years after this was written, so until someone finds the piece of paper Kurt wrote this on, and it says "Pain", I won't be convinced. And for those who are saying that the last two words at the end are both "Pain"; the two words are identical sounding, meaning that they are both the same sampled word. The beginning of the sampled word is digitally clipped, making a "p" sound, as is common with sampling----he is not saying "pain". It just sounds like it. It's "hey".

The debate on the lyrics has always had me curious. I hear many different things. With the overdubbed parts on the chorus I feel he is saying different words. I hear pain, hate, and hey. Sometimes being said at the same time, maybe giving almost an illusion. I dont know, and I'm okay with that. No matter what he says we just gotta enjoy the song. Amazing song, and honestly one of my favorites from them.

i never noticed the descending “hey” melody ended on a different note each time. they sound only a semitone different from each other though… that’s a masterful thing to come up with… and to be able to sing.
