When I first heard Ghost years ago they instantly reminded me of 70's hard rock like Blue Oyster Cult. You and your lady HAVE to react to Dance Macabre.
About Ghost's genre, I think Tobias said in an interview that he calls it "Scooby Doom Metal." Considering that Papa Emeritus does live performances of his song "Zombie Queen" with A KAZOO SOLO*, that's pretty accurate to me! *Which he named "The Kazoo of Destiny"
Audard I can see that for some folks. I have been listening to metal for decades and when I heard ghost for the first time it just broadened the genre for me. But I suppose ghost can be a bit easier to swallow in regards to heaviness if that’s what you mean.
Tobias Forge said in an interview once that he really loved the rock music of the 60’s and the 70’s so he wanted Ghost to sound like mixture of bands like black sabbath and ABBA lol they even did a ABBA cover funnily enough.
"I'm tryin to figure out this style of music" We all are. It's like very over-the-top Black Sabbath mixed with ABBA. But at the same time the band knows how silly it is, but still takes it kinda half seriously. Like I could play a song about praying to the devil for my mom and she'd enjoy it cause the band is serious about makin dancable hard rock songs.
Best band of the last decade. So many goodies. Hell, you should react to their entire catalogue. My top tracks are Secular Haze Zenith Kiss the Go Goat Deus in Absentia Ritual Rats Witch Image The cover of here comes the Sun is amazing as well.
i just discovered this band a couple months ago, and i cant believe how good they are. and why i never heard them before. They should be headlining at MsG with the song catalog they have.
Song is about Freemasonry "Standing on the Square" is something you do when going through your rites . So they are referencing Freemasonry. The Line where it says " That you're on the Level" that's reffering to the brothers in the brotherhood's standing in "Degree" aka level or Rank there are 3 Degrees. In Scottish rite there are 29 degrees numbered 4-32 but none is higher than 3 (Master Mason) rest I recommend researching if curious . Lots of Mason Refferences in here .
The freemasonry is mostly fluff. The main theme of the song is to continue the story about the antichrists reign. --- In the first album "Opus Eponymous" songs refer to the advent of the Anti-Christ. The birth and the arrival of the Anti-Christ on Earth is the main theme of the second album "Infestissumam". The third album "Meliora" describes establishing Anti-Christ's reign on Earth. "Square Hammer" extends the idea behind the third album. The song is proposing people to swear to the devil instead of god. This sets the notion that the devil is no longer an abstract idea, but rather is an established entity. It also introduces the idea that the devil occupies the spirit of people.
Actually, you are partially correct (I am a Master Mason and currently sitting in the South as the Junior Warden of my Lodge). Definately a Masonic vibe, BUT what I get from this is they are members of a Clandestine Lodge (otherwise known as black lodge referring to many delving into magic and other esoteric forms) which are non-sanctioned Lodges that are NOT freemasonry but actually prey on people that think they are joining the Freemason (of course some join them quite willingly). Magical societies like The Order Of The Golden Dawn have in fact been heavily influenced by the Freemasons (contrary to popular belief, Alister Crowley actually worked to change their rituals away from Masonic tradition. He was a Freemason & was of the mind that it was its own, sacred ideology and that using it for things beyond its original intent was not beneficial). I'm not personally against clandestine Lodges as long as they don't distort the Form or dupe people into thinking it's a Blue Lodge. But technically, in a lot of Lodges, one could be a Satanist and still be a Freemason, since we are not a Christian-exclusive fraternity. A candidate needs to believe in "Diety", and swear on a Holy scripture appropriate for said religion. The Church of Satan has their own holy text (albeit not taken literally by most that claim to be of that church). It still would count, I suppose.
I was a douche... I had never really given Ghost a chance, but this tune sold me. A lot of different elements I like in there. 80s pop, 70s hard rock, gothic/symphonic metal. really nice track. Thanks MJ and T&T. I feel a little less douche'ee now. Cheers! Peace!
Ghost is a great rabbit hole to go down Their roots are definitely black/symphonic metal, but i love how Tobias Forge evolved the sound into something completely new I agree about CIrice for your next listen. The video is amazing. I'd also include the live version of 'Monstrance Clock' from hell fest, and the acoustic version of Guleh/Zombie Queen for something that sounds completely different
The satanic imagery and face paintings aside, there is not much in common between Ghost and black metal tbh. Ghost is completely lacking the shrieking vocals, extreme distortion and aggressive drums of black metal :P
Ghosts style is mostly based on progressive and psychedelic hard rock from the 60s and 70s. Doom metal and heavy metal are also big influences. Of course with their own unique satanic twist. A former member described their style as a mix between pop music and black metal. I simply call it ”occult rock”.
I saw ghost once in New Jersey at a 2 day festival. Guess who the headliner was... Metallica!!!. This was my first time hearing any ghost. But they were awesome and loved them ever since (this was maybe around 2012 ish)
Symphonic Metal is a good description, but I'd put them more into the Progressive genera, based on the their older music. Very melodic, very theatrical. Awesome band. Glad to see them finally getting some mainstream attention. Thanks for posting this.
Rats and Dance Macabre, both by Ghost, are good....Can I request Sabaton though. I didn't see that you've done anything by them so far. Bismark is a good song to start with.
I was sure you would like ghost. their sound is very approachable and tasty. also sorry, I know I asked a lot about symphony x, but you said you already reacted to 2 songs and I should check your channel. you still didn't upload them or is there something I'm missing? thanks a lot again

I honestly think the biggest mistake that people make with Ghost is assuming that they're a metal band, i mean i completely understand the assumption, but in my opinion they're more like a 70's psychedelic rock band who just watched a ton of Hammer Horror than they are a metal band...maybe with some hints of Black Sabbath thrown in but that's as close as they get.

Love this band. To me, they sound like a mix of Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath. I highly recommend seeing them live. It’s an amazing experience and one of the best shows I’ve ever seen (3rd only to Maiden and Megadeth). They have a great catalogue of songs, but I would go with Dance Macabre, The Pinnacle and the Pit, He Is and Circle. Glad you see you enjoyed them!
A mix of Alice Cooper and Sabbath is probably as close as you'll get to describe them, good call. For reacting definitely Dance Macabre, He Is and Cirice. Pinnacle is a good song but not sure the studio version is quite as fun.
Tacobelly79 I concur on Pinnacle. Their live version is the way to go. A guilty pleasure song for me is Miasma. I love the slow build up and then, BAM.
These guys are plenty good enough without the schtick. The anti Christian/catholic stuff is played out. There’s no risk in it. There’s no hero status in it anymore if one rejects and mocks traditional values. That ended in the 80s. Otherwise, I dig the music.
Metal Elitists or someone from the metal world , kinda look at Ghost as a band that is trying to be commercial....This isn't really metal....the guitar work ain't no Dimebag, Alex Lifeson, Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Kirk or Dave or Marty etc.....basically....where's the big riffs or shredding........Where's the great screaming vocals ????? now you get me.......they are cool though.....Journey, Styx, Kansas, Boston, Yes, and Foreigner were considered heavy in the 70's....Bahahahahahahahahahahaha

I agree Dance Macabre is a a good tune. Also, Faith is a good tune probably one of their heavier tunes and on the same album "Prequelle".
BOC with a little ABBA mixed in :)
BOC was my first thought, with some Nightwish mixed in. Good stuff.
About Ghost's genre, I think Tobias said in an interview that he calls it "Scooby Doom Metal." Considering that Papa Emeritus does live performances of his song "Zombie Queen" with A KAZOO SOLO*, that's pretty accurate to me!

Ghost is the gateway drug to hard rock/metal.
Audard I can see that for some folks. I have been listening to metal for decades and when I heard ghost for the first time it just broadened the genre for me. But I suppose ghost can be a bit easier to swallow in regards to heaviness if that’s what you mean.

It's a great cover. The original is so strange.
You can also hear Metallica influences all over, as Tobias is also a big Metallica fan :)
I'm A Marinette is such a different tune then when they do it though lol.
You can say it sounds like “Black sABBAth.”
"I was trying to figure out their style of music"
They're Ghost. That's all there is to it. There is no classifying epicness of this magnitude :D
Ghost: the only ironically satanic band which you can buy glow-in-the-dark action figures of
