Alice Yeah defos. It made their relationship much better and realistic imo, and it made you feel bad for them having to deal with the eccentric characters.
It's amazing how the comedy and the lines are best served to the supporting characters. I think that helps sell the show because that way the main characters appear to suffer because of their relatives and friends and that tests their relationship with each other. In the second season they got on really badly because Smithy, Pamela, Ness, Bryn and Gwen were often in the way of their romance.
