La Brea: The Creature Cut

- All three seasons of NBC's "La Brea", but only when a creature is onscreen.
I threw this together just because I was curious about how much prehistoric life was in this show set in prehistoric times. The answer is not very much.
"La Brea" © 2021-2024 NBC Universal. All rights reserved
Okay, so this video kind of exploded. Can't say I was expecting it to take off like it did, but thanks for watching, and I hope you stick around for some upcoming videos I put actual effort into lmao.
Anyways, to answer a couple of questions I've seen pop up a bunch:
1. The show is NBC's "La Brea". It ran for three seasons from 2021-2024, and can currently be viewed on Peacock. I would, however, strongly recommend against doing that because it is QUITE bad. If I gave any of you the impression that this show was worth watching, that was a mistake, and I deeply apologize for misleading you.
2. As I said in the description, this is ALL the creature action they've got. The rest of the show is about 20 or so hours of badly-written melodrama with some generic scifi garbage thrown in every once in a while for good measure.
3. I'm like 95% sure the only reason they were able to get away with just straight lifting dinos from Jurassic Park is because NBC is also owned by Universal. Can't get sued for plagiarism if you're technically stealing from yourself!
Well, actually you can get sued for stealing your own work. Just ask John Fogerty.
Fear not my good man, I would haven ever subbed just for this show, not when there are still "alternative ways" (yarr) of watching it :)
Also You are right, it is kind of crap from the looks of it, I mean they even modeled their Direwolves wrong, I know we don't have a 3D model of one(after the recent updates on them) , but we do know they did not look like timber wolves, and since Universal is behind it you would think they could spare the money to make a decent model, Dire wolf = Short-Eared Dog on steroids, closest looking canid so it should be an easy task to make a model from that!
I remember before it came out they advertised the hell out of this show all over LA like it was going to be some groundbreaking thing. Seemed like a cool idea, glad I never watched it
as long as your happy to re upload over and over, things i've already seen. you have gained a sub
@@ericneely3028 I recall seeing promos for the show on TH-cam back in 2021. Finally got around to watching it last year and it was not as advertised. Seasons 1 and 2 are the only ones with anything resembling a coherent storyline. Season 3 was a burning pile of shit and completely lost the plot to what was already a mediocre show. And Eve is a whore.
so did the showrunners think "Lets put all the budget on the mammoth, screw everything else!"?
@@MothyGoober but just the model itself looks better than the others. It looks somewhat real whilst the rest look like ps2 graphics.
@@OliverSierraWThe Spinosaurus and woolly rhino also look good. Its either a budget thing OR they struggled blending in the CGI models in certain locations.
Notice how sometimes it looks like the animals are kinda floating on the ground? Like they glide over things as if they have no weight or traction. Its because they didn’t add them properly to the background. The mammoth looks like its there but the sabertooths, bear, and wolves don’t
@@MothyGoober The costs would go in making sure the model's parts are animated correctly, like the hair for example, which would affect render time. Considering these days you can animate each and every individual hair on a given person in a model that's a lot of polygons to render.
@@OliverSierraW what kind of mega ps2 did you own? The worst models look like ps4 graphics.
They should have made the mammoth mostly hairless; then it'd be a good columbian mammoth.

@@SleepySloth2705 Lmao even the Spinosaurus (which looked amazing) had literally the colors of the JP3 Spino... They seemed to have blew all their budget on the epic spino battle and not that stupid bulletproof ripoff JP1 Rex scene.
not to mention the guy killing a prehistoric bear with a pocketknife to the back XD
I love how she goes, there’s something in the water, and the next edit is her screaming, getting eaten😂😂😂😂my stomach hurts
both the rex and raptors looks like they rip straight out from Jurassic park.
They are so lazy
nah, they look like they rip straight out of a jurassic park ps2 game made to cash in on the movie's popularity by a small indie game studio that was too ambitious for what it could do
@@OliverSierraW good point.
Yeah, at that point I thought why did they even bother making their own Spinosaurus.
@@The_PokeSaurus that's the best point
They cooked with the Wooly Mammoth and Rhino. But man, idk why they struggled with almost all the carnivores except Spinosaurus

I was thinking the cgi looked fairly convincing. Then the megalania (?) showed up. I don’t think the animators looked hard enough at how actual monitor lizards move.
Oh yeah everything goes downhill with the Mesozoic animals.
The birds (Terathorns) also look terrible
The dire wolf was bad. Along w a few more
Um not gonna mention the Rex? That animation was terrible
what about the wolves. They look goofy like disney wolves. I bet the overall plot of the show is silly
Of course they had to take the same T-rex, velociraptor, and pteranodons designs Jurassic Park used
And Spino somehow look actually different from usual depictions
What rapors? There are none show afaik(not counting the vultures)
Okay at least the pterosaurs got some pycnofibers and more accurately proportioned wings
That mammoth was beautifully modelled and animated
Others is ugly
This movie is like a fever dream. It’s so damn weird. Just a bunch of inaccurate animals running around screaming at everything.
@Valerain is right, this is TV show not movie
Ikr I’ve always hated it when they have predatory animals roaring at the top of their lungs especially when it supposed to be a ambush predator
I like how animals and obviously dinosaurs never mistakes vehicles as another animal. For instance you could’ve thought if a T. rex looked at a giant plane flying at their direction, it could’ve thought of it as a unusually large pterasaur and ran away instead of knowing that it’s always scrawny little humans inside of it
I like how some of the Animals in this Show....Act like Actual Animals, Like the Megalania and Pterosaur Retreating after getting Speared
That megalania didnt behave like what it probably should, like other monitors. It even roared and has a very inaccurate gait.
Dude doesn't know anything about animals
Yeah, I felt my iq drop after watching 30 something soldiers pour 5.56 into a t-rex and it acted like they were pea shooters. One burst from a single gun and it's leaving, and the amount of shot they put into it would have killed it two seconds after it entered the compound
Spino got bored of trex so he decide to fight himself

Those wooly rhino too. I’m no rhino expert, but every rhino I’ve ever seen was pretty quiet.
Man this show got crazy.
And stupid
I never even would’ve thought that Mesozoic creatures would be in the show since basically all the other creatures are from the Cenozoic era
My theory: Had the series continued, they will also include Paleozoic creatures and even creatures from the distant future (possibly from a post-apocalyptic timeline after humans left the Earth or become extinct).
So, you’re theory is basically the plot of Primeval.
For the first time ever, the spinosaurus is the most accurate dinosaur ☠️💀

Ladies and gentlemen the mammoth
I have to say, the Spinosaurus model looks great
The CGI was wildly inconsistent, some parts look syfy quality and other times it looks real good. I guess its pretty easy to see which shots they cared to put budget in😂
Didn't know this show existed until now!
I have to watch this series, it looks very interesting.
11:59 no way they pulled a JP3
The Wooly Rhinos are pretty cool looking
I like how the spino was thought has strong and robust instead of skinny
The movement is so smooth
No, the movement of the creatures was even worse than their models
Idc
Some of these shots are very "made for TV" others are amazing
Spinosaurus had the most budget
I think they pasted Jp3 spinos skin
10:14 What the actual f u ck
yeah that was hilarious
If they could feather the pteranodon in this series, then why the fuck did they make the raptor look like the ones from Jurassic park?
Because they were lazy.
because thats what sells
@@msbte49 how does that sell? Thanks to documentaries like prehistoric planet and films such as Jurassic world dominion (not to mention paleo media in general) feathered dinosaurs and general scientific accuracy have become more popular among the general public than ever before. I mean for fucks sake look at how hard 65 failed at the box office, it literally failed because the audience couldn't stand how inaccurate the dinosaurs were.
These big companies behind modern cinema/television need to get their heads out their assess and start looking at what the audience actually wants instead of relying on regurgitated bullshit by lying idiots who spread such bullshit as a means of brown-nosing.
@@msbte49 although that's the case for Jurassic park and carnivores, it is nowhere near the case for everything else. Feathered dinosaurs have become more popular than ever among the general audience. Thanks to JW dominion, prehistoric planet and the paleontological community itself, more people are aware of scientific accuracy than ever before; so much so, they've begun turning on dinosaur films with inaccurate designs, hence the box office failure of the film 65.
We need a survival series on Rancho La Brea with accurate animals acting like A N I M A L S and not as bloodthirsty monsters. That can work really good, in fact, that would increase the wild atmosphere.
Thanks for this. I didn't have time to watch it. Shocking that this is all they had in 3 entire seasons.
I can't believe I've never heard of this show.
Honestly, the pliescene animals are passable, aside from the dire wolves being too wolf like since they weren't actually wolves, but closely related canids, wooly rhino looking a bit too big (though it might be elasmotherium) and the short face bear looking like and sounding like a grizzly despite being more closely related to speckical bears. But the dinosaurs feel like they came out of early 2000s.
14:18 This whole scene is hilariously ridiculous. The ineffective gunfire which should have at least left a mark and the fact that the Trex seemly forgeting how bite. I don't know the age rating on this show, but with this whole scene, it looks like they were trying to keep it pg.
Major Primeval vibes, I love it
I could already tell this was a cheesy show but the bullet proof T-rex really sold it
10:42 Dinosaurs too? Awesome 😎!
Wow... I can't believe I've never heard about this gem of a show.
And now I know why.
fucking dinosaurs?
Dinosaurs and mammals.
They aren’t on earth anymore so all prehistoric animals still exist.
It’s a plot thing the dinosaurs aren’t there naturally
You know I really wished that we got some more interactions between the dinosaurs and the other non-Dinosaur animals, like wooly Rhino facing off against triceratops or mammoth fighting a T-Rex or something like that.
OK, I did check to see when this was made, before I began criticising. After all, it made it to three seasons before being ditched, which is good going for an average SF show.
It's a pity it didn't keep consistent with its dinosaur models, because whilst the Spinosaurs were good and pretty much accurate according to current reconstruction, the same cannot be said for it's T Rex. It's almost as if the show makers got this far along and said, "Meh, we're not getting a season four, might as well throw any old tat on the screen." The T Rex couldn't have been more outdated, being an example of shrink wrapping, and with the palms of its hands facing down rather than inward. After all the decent CGI work this show had, this Rex was an utter letdown!
00:02 why am i hearing King Ghidorah.

Guy did not just kill a cave bear by stabbing it in the back with a small knife
Sure he did. You forget. This is Hollyweird we're talking about. That's the place that can create a hybrid of a T. rex, Triceratops, AND a stegosaurus.
😂😂😂😂
I love how they try to make a very accurate depiction of each species and then goal seems to be to kill one or multiple of each ...
Imagine in a different timeline they are in the Monsterverse and that hole is the hole that Godzilla made in Hong Kong and some hollow earth creatures come out of that hole
Ah yes the "The dinosaurs are indestructable slasher movie villains" approach.
Haven't seen that one before.

Like how they straight up took their dinosaurs from Jurassic Park LMAO
All of the prehistoric mammals : kinda scientifically accurate
All of the other creatures: straight out of Jurassic Parc
Spino from arbs + real life + jp3 is good spino
The spinosaurus’ looked sick!
Looks like a fun watch, really reminds me of Primeval. CG ain’t the best but for a TV show I think it’s a little expected. Do wish the raptors and Rex were given tweaks to not just be copy-pastes of the JP designs, but it’s fine because those 90s dinos hold a special place in my heart. Favorite design might go to the Spinosaurus though, great mix of the 2001 JP3 Spino and the more recent one!
Initially i thought this was just a primeval spin off series or something as i have only heard of it from your channel. Nonetheless im also surprised that according to some people in the comments that this show was released in 2024!
That’s the latest season. Shows been out for a few years now.

Interesting. I read your comment that it's not very good, which is a shame since it's giving me major Primeval-vibes. Hopefully we'll get another good show with this sort of premise someday, especially if they mix in future creatures like they did in Primeval - definitely some of the more ominous episodes.
Wait, wait. Dinosaurs in the la Brea area. Thought this was prehistoric, but in the Pleistocene period.

By the way the creatures are honestly cool, I know they're not completely accurate but I'm happy that I've seen some live action spinos alongside some male pteranodons after f*cking 23 years, the trex was also awesome.
