It sucks you in and prevents you from dating and progression. - Avoid overspending! Make a budget! Dont use loans as spending money!!! I literally cannot stress this enough. I know college is for fun but you will regret those loans for the rest of your life if you take out too many so be responsible (this ties back to the first point in this comment as well). - Avoid being resistant to change. We’re taught in high school that basically everything has to be perfect for academics and social life and any little change will screw it all up. Learn to adapt and embrace any discomfort, thats what college is about. Dont overstress about a friend turning out fake or a guy bailing on you, its also ok for your college plans to change (my academic plan changed literally 4 times within the first, nothing super duper major but still important). Just go with the flow and accept that things wont be perfectly adhering to plans.
Ooh also! Here’s a DO: Explore campus and every little nook and cranny if you’re into that, especially if its a bigger university. You find so many hidden gems, from private studying spots that are great during exam week when everything is crowded, to cool backdrops for insta photos. You’re paying for college, you might as well know everything youre paying for 😂

I attend any early college high school and from my experience, I do so much better in community college classes than I would do working fast food restaurant. Just make sure you choose your classes asap and get the best professor you can.

I'll add something from my own experience. Do not join a hard-partying, extroverted sorority if you are a non-partying introvert. Granted if the sorority has 400 people in it, there will be a clique of people introverts can feel comfortable in, but at colleges with smaller sororities, it can be hard to find a core group of sisters who don't want to hang out at frat houses and get drunk every night. Choose a sorority based on how you fit in, not based on some arbitrary "ranking" on a certain crap website. Don't go through recruitment trying to be someone the so-called top sororities want. You will not be happy there.

I know everyone is saying NOT to take early classes, but I’ve been so used to waking up at 5:45 am all the time that my earliest class is at 8:05. If I regret it this comment is irrelevant but I personally feel like having an early morning start is essential (for me personally)
Honestly, I don't mind early classes either I like it because you get your classes out of the way faster I personally like having a 8 a.m. to 12-noon type class schedule but everyone is different and should do what they feel comfortable with

I watched this a few months before my first year of college. It helped me sooooo much. I remembered small bits from the video, but I could never remember where I heard it from. Now that I've found the video that has helped me out so much, I would like to say thank you.
I'd like to disagree with the "don't avoid parties/football games". Y'all don't have to do that if you don't like those things. There are other fun things and you literally won't miss anything and no one will hate you for it. There's clubs and other events that are just as fun. Especially if parties in football games affect your mental health! They are not more important than that! If you like football games and parties, that's great, but it's not for everyone and some people are 100% fine missing a party or a game.
Many classes may have participation as percentage of total grade. It's hard for introverts, but life is a participation sport so it helps to be prepared for it.
I'm screwed. I have a history class and math class that were only available at 830 once a week. And I wasn't late or anything, that's just the only time it is offered. At least it's only once a week
The unassigned assigned seat thing is something I don't have to worry about because I get preferential seating due to my legal blindness. I literally can't sit anywhere except the front row. Either that or my teachers have given me the presentation to watch up front.
Ok but I've always had my keys and Id around my neck. I've tried having them in my pocket for a while and I kept having a mini panic attack so I'll keep them on my neck.
I have a wallet sticky thing on the back of my phone that I keep my student I’d, credit card, and driver’s license in when on campus, and it is soo convenient! Just try not to stick more than 4 or 5 cards because it will eventually wear out and break, but as long as it’s only 2-3 cards, it will work out well. I used to keep my I’d in my lanyard in my pocket until this trick. If you don’t want to buy one of those sticky wallet things or a wallet phone case, stick it inside your phone case behind your phone, and that should work.
I'm not going to college until in a couple years, but I'm already super concerned about the 'walking alone around campus' and 'don't leave your drink' matter. I didn't know it would be such a major problem. I go to an all girls school and I generally walk to places by myself, so that worries me
walking during the day on campus isn't dangerous necessarily. I would definitely be careful at night on and especially off campus alone. a lot of girls in college carry pepper spray in case you need it! Also watching your drink unfortunately is something you should totally do, because sometimes unfortunate things happen :/

I prefer front 2-3 rows in the middle of the room!! Being in the front helps you pay attention more and hopefully stay more attentive and engaged with the professor and material!

another tip is to talk to as much people in your classes as possible! it makes it less awkward and when times are stressful they are there to help it also makes a class more fun!
When I was a freshman last year you shared a bathroom with your roommate and the people in the room next to you it was so nice to have a private bathroom that only shared with 3 people I didn’t have to shower with shoes and I knew first hand how clean that bathroom was
I take dual enrollment classes at my local community college, and for my BIO class, I rented my lab manual from Amazon. It came in with 73 PAGES MISSING! All the lab reports I needed. So Amazon isn't always good for textbooks.

HAHAHA I reply to every comment :) ❤️ OSU specifically does a lottery system now. when I was there it went by class, but now that they require 1st and 2nd years to live on campus, they do it in a lottery system! once your number has been chosen you get to go into the system and pick from the remainder dorms and room options!
I was the freshman with the neck lanyard, but I also worked for the university and had my ID card there so I could access locked doors etc. It's definitely dorky though 😭
hahahha, you'll get used to it!! I would recommend going to office hours and going to recitations and utilizing those times to ask questions and to make sure you understand. It's hard to do that in a big class setting.

Love the video! I’m going into my freshman year and taking 17 credits. Went to boarding school so I felt like I could at least bulk up when classes are a bit easier. My days as also begin by 11 or 12 but on days I have drawing they end around 5. Do you think that was a mistake, taking 17 credits and having some days end a bit late? I thought it be fine because drawing is a bit more fun. :)

Marissa. Story time. I was parked on West campus parking. I drove a white car, and there was 2 inches (or more) of snow. I couldn't find my car. I walked around for 2 hours. I found a gas station, and had them call campus police. The person at the gas station offered me free coffee (but as a Mormon I couldn't accept it, I should have asked if he had hot chocolate). Anyhow campus police came and drove me around, and we found my car eventually. This was pre-cell phone era (1998?) I would have been better off in that situation with a cell-phone.

The unassigned assigned seat thing is something I don't have to worry about because I get preferential seating due to my legal blindness. I literally can't sit anywhere except the front row. Either that or my teachers have given me the presentation to watch up front.

Ok but I've always had my keys and Id around my neck. I've tried having them in my pocket for a while and I kept having a mini panic attack so I'll keep them on my neck.
I have a wallet sticky thing on the back of my phone that I keep my student I’d, credit card, and driver’s license in when on campus, and it is soo convenient! Just try not to stick more than 4 or 5 cards because it will eventually wear out and break, but as long as it’s only 2-3 cards, it will work out well. I used to keep my I’d in my lanyard in my pocket until this trick. If you don’t want to buy one of those sticky wallet things or a wallet phone case, stick it inside your phone case behind your phone, and that should work.
So many people use those!! They’re so handy!!!

I didn't know it would be such a major problem. I go to an all girls school and I generally walk to places by myself, so that worries me
walking during the day on campus isn't dangerous necessarily. I would definitely be careful at night on and especially off campus alone. a lot of girls in college carry pepper spray in case you need it! Also watching your drink unfortunately is something you should totally do, because sometimes unfortunate things happen :/

What is a good unassigned assigned seat to pick the first day? In high school I was always a second row kind of girl or first when my friends were with me, but idk if that's the best idea
I prefer front 2-3 rows in the middle of the room!! Being in the front helps you pay attention more and hopefully stay more attentive and engaged with the professor and material!

When I was a freshman last year you shared a bathroom with your roommate and the people in the room next to you it was so nice to have a private bathroom that only shared with 3 people I didn’t have to shower with shoes and I knew first hand how clean that bathroom was

I take dual enrollment classes at my local community college, and for my BIO class, I rented my lab manual from Amazon. It came in with 73 PAGES MISSING! All the lab reports I needed. So Amazon isn't always good for textbooks.

During the day and during daylight hours is always safer, but avoid walking around at night alone. thats the main thing.

Do higher classes like juniors/seniors get better dorms? Or is it all lottery? And how specifically can you choose your room? These videos are fun to watch but I still have so many questions. OSU specifically does a lottery system now. when I was there it went by class, but now that they require 1st and 2nd years to live on campus, they do it in a lottery system! once your number has been chosen you get to go into the system and pick from the remainder dorms and room options!

hahahha, you'll get used to it!! I would recommend going to office hours and going to recitations and utilizing those times to ask questions and to make sure you understand. It's hard to do that in a big class setting.

Love the video! I’m going into my freshman year and taking 17 credits. Went to boarding school so I felt like I could at least bulk up when classes are a bit easier. My days as also begin by 11 or 12 but on days I have drawing they end around 5. Do you think that was a mistake, taking 17 credits and having some days end a bit late? I thought it be fine because drawing is a bit more fun. :)

Yeah!! you can definitely try rushing at your school!! every school has a different greek life atmosphere! so I always say try it if you really want it! I rushed as a junior, so it is doable!!
Join some kind of club or organization as a freshman. It's easier than you think to find yourself with no friends.

Marissa. Story time. I was parked on West campus parking. I drove a white car, and there was 2 inches (or more) of snow. I couldn't find my car. I walked around for 2 hours. I found a gas station, and had them call campus police. The person at the gas station offered me free coffee (but as a Mormon I couldn't accept it, I should have asked if he had hot chocolate). Anyhow campus police came and drove me around, and we found my car eventually. This was pre-cell phone era (1998?) I would have been better off in that situation with a cell-phone.
