    Pro tip: dollar tree and dont obsess over having everything in your color of your theme, while and black basics can work for the next year. Also some items just have to be replaced yearly so dont invest too much in them.

      @@dhenderson319 my dorm had a bathroom that shared bathroom for my roommate so usually all bathroom stuff needed replacing. Anything that u share and easy to break, also your style changes alot and you wont want same looking dorm or apartment every year so dont invest in decor too much and be ready to sell it. Here’s some tips that I think are helpful as well!
    1.) don’t over buy/pack when moving in to your first dorm! Just bring the necessities and some decor items and then once you’re settled you can see what you actually need day to day. Ordering online is easy and sometimes cheaper and can be delivered to ur package center on campus!
    2.) don’t feel the need to by a new wardrobe for college. Just take it easy and go through your closet at home as bring what you love. As you get use to college life you will find out what your style is. If anything get basics. (Jeans, sweats, thin sweaters, dresses) getting pieces that can go together and be multi functional will give you more space in ur tiny dorm clothes. Also splurge on a nice pair of sneakers, rain boots and a rain coat. (Trust me all will come in handy)
    3.) splurge on a nice and durable backpack. In college you carry a back pack 24/7 get something that’s tough and possibly waterproof. Even if that means not getting a cute one. Trust me I’ve wasted so much money on cute cheap bookbags
    3.) always check Facebook marketplace for other students selling textbooks. It’s cheaper than online resell sites and quicker to obtain since ur both on campus.
    4.) save money by stocking up on snacks you can take you class. That can add up so quickly
    5.) lastly, Dollar general and dollar tree are a college student best friend!
    School supplies, some food, kitchen and house supplies, and even some dorm decor like pillows and wall art! Some items can be cheap and not worth the money but there are tons of great items for less than $20! Cheaper than even Walmart and bonus when it comes to decor you won’t be likely to have the same theme as other people’s dorms!

    I would really love to see a video on organization hacks for dorms! I do have a few tips tho.
    My freshman year at a community college my roommate and I both wanted to try to divide our room to make our own separate spaces so we put our beds on opposite sides of the room facing each other, put our desks right next to our headboards and our dressers back to back at the footboards. Both of our rugs fit perfectly in our little areas, it freed up our closet space (the dressers were originally in the closets) and it gave us both privacy and a sense of coziness. Also find local or mom and pop grocery stores and coupon there! But if you’re like us and try not to drive too far or walk and there’s a dollar general nearby download the dollar general app for the coupons! It helped us a ton! Oh and my roommates bf would sneak food from the cafeteria into containers in his book bag and take it back to his dorm and put in his mini fridge. We all got free meals with all you can eat so we started doing that and we lost weight and saved money cause we weren’t having late night gas station runs for snacks or making ramen noodles so much!
    Best of luck to everyone starting college!!!

    Check what you are/aren't allowed to have in your room. It would be a waste to buy a microwave or something if you end up not being able to keep it in your room. We can have mircowaves, mini fridges, and coffee makers in my dorm. We cannot use toasters or hotplates in our rooms. You can have a toaster and keep it in your room, but you can only use it in the kitchen. (Each floor has a shared kitchen in my dorm).

      @MyDriftingDesk  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    When do you recommend is the best time to buy a new laptop? Now, right before school, tax free weekend?

    • @MyDriftingDesk
      @MyDriftingDesk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Me personally, I got a better deal closer to school, and maybe even into winter break for Christmas time. They offer good student discounts and usually throw in other things for students like headphones or something. Definitely do your research and see what their discount is at your store vs. what the price would be during tax weekend! Maybe it would be cheaper then!

      Yes!!! Gotta get that student discount!!!

    • @MyDriftingDesk
      @MyDriftingDesk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Definitely recommend trying Best Buy during the Summer time and using your student discount to get really any laptop cheaper! Also getting a year maybe 2 older than the newest version and getting the least amount of memory on it (if you're only using it for school, the least amount of memory is enough to write papers and get on the internet).

Then maybe good will or I'll head to Walmart. Having a grad party was the best thing I could’ve done. I had a registry through Target and I was able to get things purchased through that. It’s an easy way for people who can’t come to the party to still get you something without sending you money. But also having a registry reminds people that you’re gonna need things going into college. I didn’t have that many people buy off the registry but I did get money/checks because people realized that I would need it to buy all the things in the registry. Also I’m going out of state so for some money was a more practical option. Hope this helps someone. Make sure the registry has the more expensive things as well as some cheaper options that way people can get you something no matter their income.
    Now onto my question 😂
    What’s the diversity like in sororities? Im African American and diversity is somewhat important when it comes to sorority choosing.
    Also is there a lot of commingling between fraternities and sororities?

    my mom wanted me to have my own things. she did not want me to share a thing with anyone (which I appreciated) me and my freshmen roommate had two fridges and my roommate wanted to share but im like.. "my mom doesn't want me to share" (she probably thought I was spoiled and selfish) which I wasn't because I was down to share (if I had to) my mom was like I don't want yall to fight and now you cant use her stuff soooooo. First: What's do you think about dormify? Do you think it's a good deal? PS might be roomify now I don't know if they change their name
    Second: What technically is Rush?, Was there any hazing in your sorority?, How much do you pay to be in a sorority and is it worth it to live in the sorority house or not?

    • @MyDriftingDesk
      @MyDriftingDesk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      So I have never ordered from Dormify so I cannot speak on quality or anything BUT when I’ve searched there for me personally and my financial situation I would never get anything. It was WAY too pricey for me and I knew I could get the same thing somewhere else for cheaper. But that’s me. So depending on what’s considered expensive for you or not, may help in deciding. But I can assure you that you can find anything on that website somewhere else for cheaper or even DIY most of it. I hope that helps!!

What should people be looking for in a chapter? Should GreekRank be trusted? What are some things I should know that the people rushing me aren't going to tell me? Are recommendations important? • @LaverlyLove
      @LaverlyLove 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You'll literally go out to study. I recommend NOT studying in your room. Designate your room to be a chill and relax space away from school stuff. Study at the library, go to a coffee shop off campus and get a punch card to get free drinks, go to a public library, park, etc.

    • @MyDriftingDesk
      @MyDriftingDesk  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly just staying in the dorms and hanging out with your friends/roommates is enough!! I always hang out with my friends, thats usually free. Studying with partners or friends make it more fun and free! Walking around campus/by the park is always a nice relaxing thing! Netflix is always the move with some popcorn is cheap! Gym sessions with friends are usually "free" because you may have already paid for gym access with your tuition and fees! We love to explore Columbus and the area around it because it's free (unless you actually DO something) but window shopping is free and just walking around our Short North area or taking a city bus somewhere else is always a fun adventure! I hope I gave you some fun ideas!!

    I've always heard that being in a sorority is expensive. Is it more expensive than living in a dorm or apartment? What is the average cost of being in a sorority?

    Actually most dorms have Twin XL my dorm has a full size bed. So recommend students to look at there universitys/community college dorms/apartments to make sure about the size of bed

      Good idea!!!! I haven’t heard of a college providing full sized beds!!

      Yeah, my college used to have full sized beds in the single rooms so when I moved to a single room I had to buy new sheets. Then the next year they changed all the rooms to double rooms with regular twin beds (so all the rooms except RA rooms are set up for 2 people, and even if you don't have a roomie you still have two of everthing) and I had to get new sheets again.

    What amount of GB storage is your macbook air? I don’t want to spend a lot of money but my HP isn’t working and I have no idea what amount of GB would be enough for a college student.

    • @MyDriftingDesk
      @MyDriftingDesk  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I bought mine I got the last version ( because the newest version just came out and that one was expensive, so I got the one right before it because it was cheaper because of the new one ) and then I got the lowest amount of storage because I only use it for taking notes and writing papers. Not too much else, so I don’t need a ton of storage. That was my way of saving money!

    I would highly discourage anyone from buying a mini-fridge. They use an abhorrent amount of electricity and are so expensive. I know my school has kitchenettes on nearly every floor and usually a full kitchen on the first floor, so it's so much better for the environment to just use that and label your food.

    • @MyDriftingDesk
      @MyDriftingDesk  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most dorms will come with their own, and if they don't I agree, most dorms have kitchens/kitchenette's so it isn't a necessity.

    Question for the sorority vid: All the girls I've seen on youtube that are in sororities are really involved and have lots of responsibilities for them. Is it possible to be in a sorority and not be that committed?

    Can you still bring your own mattress even if they include them in the dorms?

    • @MyDriftingDesk
      @MyDriftingDesk  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sometimes, however then you’ll have two. You would have to stack them or store your other mattress somewhere else in your room. Typically they won’t remove them from the rooms if you bring your own because they provide them for you.
