  • This video is fully dedicated for detailed exploration of a dual glow plug design by Saito, which is implemented in Saito FA 120S DP (Dual Plug) engine version.
I'm going to find some answers - what are the advantages of this unusual dual glow plug design. Definitely, should tell you, that this video doesn't cover all questions and there still few of them, which are necessary to be answered in next videos, dedicated to Saito FA 120S DP.
So, what was quite interesting - with or without glow battery connected, lowest idle speed was around 1100-1200 RPM. Sure, that if I can achieve stable fuel supply (using fuel pump), avoiding fuel tank pressurizing from exhaust muffler, it could be possible to achieve more stable idle.
Additional way - is to establish better ignition in combustion chamber.
Here spark ignition could help - so next set of engine runs will be dedicated to spark ignition conversion. Dual plug design in spark ignition for sure should support more stable engine run.
So, stay tuned for updated video with Saito FA 120S DP from CrazyEngines.
Thank you for watching and have a nice day !

Try using 1 four stroke glow plug and 1 cold glow plug. Put the igniter on the cold plug and see if the four stroke plug lights from revving the engine up.
First verify that the engine will not run properly on the cold plug by using the dead plug in the other hole.

Thank you for your comment and for your advises ! definitely, would try in the next videos. Once cold glow plug will be found in my workshop or somewhere on Ebay.

The 120SDP is not the only Saito that had dual plugs. The 182T and 130T also had them. The manual for the 182T states that only the REAR plugs need to be energized for starting and operation. www.saito-mfg.com/english/Instructionmanual/English/4st-Engines/FA-182TD.pdf
This is also referenced in the Clarence Lee article here, sceptreflight.com/Model%20Engine%20Tests/Saito%20FA-182T.html
I fail to understand how evaluating the dual plug system operation at only IDLE gives any real relevant information. On an airplane, how often do you sit around idling? To me it seems that transition and max RPM should also be investigated seeing as airplanes do not fly only at idle. (It seems that most of your videos focus more on the absolute lowest idle obtainable and less on actual transition from idle to full RPM and peak RPM)

Dear Mr. McIntire, thank you a lot for you comment and for advices given ! Being owning Saito FA 182 T D version, but haven't time to look deeper into it's manual. Also, I've found, that Saito still produced FA 325R5D radial engine, which utilizing dual plug design. Additionally, thank you for reference of official Saito manual engine start recommendations ! It would really helps me in DP version design investigation. Also, agreed with you about your notes regarding what RPM range will be better to find the real advantages in DP design. There is two explanations - first, I'm very focused to find the receipts of lowest possible and stable idle speed. Secondary - I'm very limited on time of the video, so could not cover all aspects of this topic in one video. Exploration of DP design at higher speed are also planned in the nearest time.
Really appreciate you for your notes !

I almost wonder if this thing could be run as both a sparker and a glow engine if you got a 1/4x32 spark plug to put in the forward(and more awkward to connect a glow driver to) hole. Maybe idle it on spark and run glow at higher power, or make it flex fuel, something like that?
P.sure the plug would light up on its own with the engine running on spark.

Thank you for your comment ! Definitely, you're reading directly from my brain :-) . To be seriously, next test run with Saito FA 120S DP was planned with spark ignition (with two spark plugs 1/4x32, from twin cylinder engine - ignition fired each time with both plugs) or with glow plug / spark plug combo setup. Will need to solve some mounting problems, of course - do not want to drill engine case for Hall sensor placement. So, a lot of surprises (for sure) will wait us during the next test run. Stay tuned and have a nice day !

@@crazyengines88 use on board glow for a twin. it would be less trouble to install. besides, both plugs would have to fire at the same time. you would need a ignition module for an even fire twin, useing a single magnet trigger.

@@crazyengines88 I almost wonder if you could get it to tick over at something like 500RPM on spark, still transition nicely. If it was running CDI at low RPM and glow at high RPM you could optimize the timing for a super super super low idle that otherwise isn't attainable.

Thank you for your notes and ideas ! I'm really interested to check this kind of setup (combo glow plug plus spark ignition). There is a kind of limitation - how to check and to be sure, that glow plug also heated enough to provide additional ignition support ? I've only one idea - to measure it's resistance in cold and in hot working condition to get clear confirmation that glow plug is lightning. So, a lot of engineering would need for that test. Anyhow, I'll try to make such tests. Stay tuned !

@@harveynewman4333 Thank you for your advices ! I'll use dual spark ignition module for twin cylinder engines from Rcexl, as far as I know, it fires every time when magnet bypassed hall sensor. Quite interesting to know, how Saito FA 120S DP will perform with dual spark plug ignition, as well, as with hybrid ignition (one glow plug, one spark plug). So, stay tuned !
