This was my favorite show back in the 70s. I was in high school and loved every episode. Hell, I still love every episode. Anytime I come across a show I have to stop what I'm doing and watch. They just don't make 'em like they used to.

WKRP was so far ahead of its time. I have recently been rewatching the series, and I cannot think of any other 70s sitcom whose humor has aged as well as WKRP.
I also love how the show tackled serious issues so brilliantly without losing its comedic edge

  • @redgreen43

One of the most brilliant pieces of satire ever was the episode with Rev. "Little Ed" Pembrook offering things like Dead Sea Scroll Steak Knives and The World Is Coming to an End Lawn Furniture in exchange for your donation. I worked at a Christian radio station for a while and was both amazed and disgusted at how men who were supposed to be ministers of the Gospel were in effect nothing more than glorified pitchmen begging for money and getting it from poor widows who really couldn't afford those "donations". Little Ed captured their spirit perfectly.

I was an entertainer at Mammoth Mountain, California working at the Ski Lodge as the Pub Guitarist and Singer. One night Frank Bonner walked in and sat down, and when i took my break I went over to talk to him, not knowing it was actually HERB from WKRP...so I opened with, "You won't believe this, but you look just like Herb Tarlick of WKRP in Cincinnati!", and very much like Herb, he looked up and said. "...that might be because I AM Herb Tarlick!" There was no mistaking that voice.
We became fast friends and went out skiing the next day. Because I was living there and Frank was new to the Mountain, I explained to him that if we took the tram to the peak, and if we got into a racers stance going down the slope, we could actually get enough speed to go up to the top of the next run without having to take the tram. Frank agreed.
We had just gotten into the racing stance flying down the run when I looked over and Frank had bailed out. I already had too much speed to just bail, so I kept the course. When my skis suddenly angled up, and I realized that I was unintentionally doing an airborne back-flip. All the trees were upside down, up was down, and I had just enough time to realize there had been an avalanche and a big chunk of the run was just missing. With arms and legs going in every direction, I dropped about 30 feet and landed on my head. I just laid there for a minute when I heard Frank laughing!! He held out his hands to help me up...which was good...I was sure i was dead.
So we skied several more runs before I realized my neck was pulling to one side....Turns out my neck was broken. Not good. Frank was very cool about spending some more time with me to make sure i was alright. If you can picture this...Herb Tarlick was in the room, and I was playing guitar and singing with a neck brace, in front of a room full of skiers that had come up for the week end and a good time. Not a good picture. I was told by the Manager that they loved what I was doing but the whole neck brace thing wasn't a good look for the first time skiers. Good point. There is more t the story with Frank, but this already looks like a small book...if you want the rest of it...drop me an email and I will send it to you. I like what you are doing...sorry for the length of this. The rest involves his most embarrassing moment ever...and I would rather talk with him first, before I repeat it...it's a very funny story.

I'm a radio personality and was for a few years a Program Director of KSKQ 89.5fm and 94.1fm in Southern Oregon - Community Radio. This show and the New WKRP- is very accurate to the wild experiences and challenges in radio... and each personality is quirky as ever. Yes- tis true. As a kid (born in 73), I watched these episodes (likely re-runs) and never thought one day I'd be on the airwaves and in Radio. Alas, here I am, and it is a joy and pleasure every Friday morning to be on air. Save and preserve Community Radio!! Keep it alive- it is an invaluable resource. A treasure to be kept in the world. WKRP is a great show. I was able to get my hands on a dvd collection which contains most, if not all, the original rock gems they used in the course of the show. All the characters were well acted and the writing was so funny. Best episode features "Scum of the Earth", the up and coming band with a penchant for chaos and destruction.

    • @Paul876
      @Paul876 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@larrylamphear8473 That's true, particularly for the first several years in which WKRP was released as video cassettes and later dvds. A company named Shout painstakingly got as much of the rights to the original music from WKRP as they could. I have rewatched many episodes on my set and so far, have not noticed any glaring examples of generic session studio music replacing the original songs. Music rights are very expensive for most published music. I have a friend, who with his wife, has done a lot of karaoke over the years and it's a somewhat similar situation. There are a few musical artists who won't allow the rights to their entire song catalogs to be released to karaoke music companies, or in some cases the rights are way too expensive to purchase. The three biggest examples he gave me were The Eagles, The Stones and The Beatles.

It was handled with class and respect. I saw the Who shortly after in Toronto and the organizers were spraying water hoses at the crowd to get them back from the stage and threatening to shut down if they didn't. The show addressed a multitude of social issues without being critical or accusing. From gangs to drugs, Mr Carlson "having a monkey on his foot" was hilarious.

My dad was a rock DJ in Detroit, WRIF, in the 70s and early 80s. Me and my sister grew up in radio stations. This show was on the air at tha time, and we always watched it with my did. He was a single parent. The show was pretty accurate. To an extent. A compressed and more dramatic account so to speak. My dad had a big rock and roll afro, and his shirt buttoned down with a gold Scorpio emblem on a necklace. This was the disco era. So he was into motown, rock, but went to discos and cool parties. It always felt cool when we'd be out shopping and radio listeners would recognize him from live broadcasts and promotional events, and want to meet him. Sometimes he'd put me and my sister in commercials if it called for children's voices. Once we were cruising in his 1970 Cadillac, and our commercial came on the air. We felt really proud and like a brief moment of fame. Dad taught me how to cue up records and start commercials on tape. Sometimes if he had a stretch of music, what you heard on the radio was little boy me who picked Kiss, Boston, Fleetwood Mac, RamJam, etc.
Great times. I miss the 70s and 80s.

We watched them all. The episode where Les Nessman caught the ball in the outfield was poignant.

My most memorable scene other than the reoccurring turkeys away every Thanksgiving was when Venus flytrap educates a troubled teen on the human cell

Having worked at a 1000 watt am station (WGSW) in the 50s, it is so easy to identify with all the characters. Our station had all of them...just different names. WKRP remains a classic that epitomizes that era of radio. Thanks for the memories.

I was a radio DJ for 20 years. About half way through I got a new job but had to change my name. I had always liked the name Christopher so I decided on Chris as a first name. It was almost time to go to work but I still hadn’t come up with a last name. I was watching WKRP in the episode where Bailey was supposed to go on a date with Johnny but got stood up.
I thought “hmm. Bailey”. From that day until I retired my on air name was Chris Bailey thanks to Jan Smithers.
It’s true that the WKRP characters were realistic. I have known each one from the cute receptionist to the whacky news director. Never all at the same station. I always fancied myself as more of an Andy Travis. Such nice memories 🤓

The Consultant was great. For as cold as Momma Carlson seemed, she had a lot of feelings and respect for Jennifer and Bailey, so when he attacked the two of them as bimbos, it was like he had attacked her.

I was a kid in the 70s and tuned in every week to watch WKRP. My favorite episode was one where Johnny Fever's apartment was being fumigated for Lizards. I haven't seen it as an adult yet, but I remember that as being the funniest episode. Turkeys was my #2.
