I (a wife) am the one who started researching REI, have managed to get us completely free rent (utilities, Netflix, etc included) in LA while staying in very nice homes, got our current rental property on an extremely good deal and am renting it out to excellent tenants who never want to leave. We're only $20k (2 months) away from being done w/his student loans that were $65k getting dragged out to 2036 before we met and I helped with a plan to KILL that debt, and we're only $27k away from paying off the rental property (which means lots of money to borrow for the next property). My husband would 100% prefer for me to do the bidding... I'm probably the most frugal person he's ever met, but somehow with expensive/nice taste. Personally tiled our massive bathroom for $300 and even professionals are impressed by it--it was previously carpeted and of course the sub-floor was water damaged. We both bring a lot to the relationship. Be smart enough to date/marry someone who appreciates your value and is smart enough not let gender tropes get in the way.

Realestate is the most corrupt business ever!!!! Probably straw buyers. This reminds me of the time during the height of the housing boom I got into a bidding war. I tried to purchase a beautiful condo that was owned by a realtor. We kept getting outbid, but somehow she kept giving us a second chance to once again, come with the "best and highest offer." After 2 times getting "outbid", I told my realtor that I would only bid again if I saw the other signed competing offer. The seller got all offended and I told them to shove it and sell it to the other buyers. We are moving on. Guess what? The property was back on the market in a week. Housing bust happened and I checked on that property and found the owner/realtor was never able to sell it. Within a year it was foreclosed on. Oh that felt good.
For a house like this, I wouldn’t go over 235k. There are way better homes out there for a cheaper price. U got to put your emotions aside in real estate and play smart, even if it means you’ll lose a stupid little auction...

She barked up the wrong tree :D That house easily needs $120k , just the new windows are 20 grand minimum, 20k on the kitchen, 5-8k on each bathroom, 5k in paint, 10k in flooring, 3k in landscaping, 4k to cut down that tree if you can even get the permit. It goes on and on. Sometimes the best deals you make are the ones you don't take.
