My issue with this film is that it’s hardly a biopic. It skips over 80% of Bernstein’s biography, which in my view are the most interesting parts, the music and his politics.
Rather it focus most of its energy on the relationship he has with Felicia. Which is fine, but I didn’t find it particularly compelling. We’ve seen this film before.

In my humble opinion, I thought Bradley Cooper‘s performance was borderline parodical, sometimes hard to watch, in contrast I found Carey Mulligan to be very convincing and moving. On all other aspects, like the cinematography, I agree, and yes the Snoopy scene was great!

Carey Mulligan and Bradley Cooper give exceptional performances but I left the film feeling empty. We didn't learn anything about Leonard Bernstein. I think the material would have suited a limited series better rather than a film because I came away with nothing.

Great review, Dan, and I agree wholeheartedly. One thing I loved about the movie is how it takes on the “age” of the characters it’s conveying: “young” (energetic, imaginative, and a little scattershot) when the characters are young, and “old” (thoughtful, introspective, and slower) when the characters are old.

I’m a huge fan of Bernstein’s work. Many of my favorite recordings were conducted by him, from Copland and Gershwin to Mahler and Sibelius. Not to mention his compositions. I’ve always appreciated how his education of music wasn’t simply in regards to practical matters of composition such as might be taught in school but how he also delved into composer’s intent. He had a keen intellect that conveyed emotion through his work, which is extraordinarily difficult.
I’m very much looking forward to watching this.

I’m 72 years old with his writing and I remember watching Leonard Bernstein on the Young People’s Concerts when I was growing up. This film is a wonderful homage to him.
I’ve experienced this film twice in movie theaters recently.

Two film into Bradley Cooper's directorial career, and I've pinpointed his biggest issue: pacing!!! Both this and A Star is Born are films I was loving during their first 45 minutes to an hour, only for them to become unbearably heavy in their second hours, and I think part of it is that he deals with a level of melodrama that becomes suffocating when he employs that prestige movie pacing. I would say I liked Maestro better than A Star is Born (mostly because it gets much more creative with the shots, and also because Carey Mulligan is a bigger pro for a sparring partner and gives one of my favorite performances of hers), but it's interesting that I found both films had the same issue.

Excellent review. I couldn’t agree more with everything you said. And you have a great name, Dan! I also appreciated that Bradley Cooper is another multi-talented artist who plays one. It couldn’t be more perfect. The way he captured every Lenny mannerism is astounding. We really think it’s him. I’m sure you noticed there’s almost no scene where he doesn’t have a cigarette in his hand. I’ve heard people complain that not enough of the movie focused on his music and genius. I couldn’t disagree more. As a professional musician, I know as much about the career and works of Bernstein as I do about Beethoven. We don’t need that. This movie opens the door to his private life in a way we have never seen before and what emerges is a fragile man who had his own demons to deal with. Ultimately, this god-like figure is just another human being inside. I was fortunate to live a few blocks from him when I was a student at Juilliard. I once had to stop while he backed his car out of the Dakota building. Next to him in the convertible was an attractive young man. I literally had to stop because he was blocking the sidewalk. Felicia was gone by that time. This movie makes us think more deeply about the man, and we still appreciate his genius, despite his human failings. This is an important film for everyone, not just musicians. His children were interviewed on a video on YT, and they approved of the movie and worked with Bradley Cooper to make sure it was as authentic as possible. It doesn’t get better than having his own kids’ endorsement.

Yeah! I enjoyed it. It’s multilayered and I think I’d like to watch it again. Certainly had many of my favourite scores. There would have to be an Oscar there somewhere.

I am watching it for the first time and I have never been so sick of watching people smoke cigarettes as I am now. Could they have shot at least once scene without them!? Holy shit!

Snoppy loomed large above the characters in this film.

The prosthetic nose is incredibly unnecessary and probably minstrel-esque. It adds nothing to the film.

    4 stars.
The focus of this movie is very important. Some of the negative reviews seem to have been written by critics who have never seen a sloppy biopic with no point of view.

Great acting disjointed plot, Carey Mulligan made me cry, here characters fight against cancer and how she dealt with it, most realistic ever.

This movie will go down in History as the movie where everybody is always smoking in every scene. I'm sure the tobacco industry loves this movie and probably threw some bucks to it's production budget. Oh, and maybe it should have been called «The maestro's wife».

The acting was fine, the movie was meh. It felt like it was trying to hit a home run and only hit a single.

So, a few thoughts on Maestro. If you are a Bradley Cooper fan but don’t know much - or anything - about Leonard Bernstein, perhaps you either don’t even watch this movie OR you just watch it for Bradley Cooper - not really interested in learning anything about Leonard Bernstein. If the latter is the case, I’m not sure you’ll get much from this experience. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the film. I very much enjoyed it as well was the acting by both Cooper and Carey Mulligan. I think Cooper’s direction was very generous to her and her performance was very genuine and marvelous. I equally enjoyed the use of the music throughout. I think the B&W-to-color transition was predictable, though, and might not have been necessary. For me, the aesthetic quality of today’s movies that are presented in B&W is just too good and it comes off as just a gimmick. I look forward to watching and listening to this movie again as I felt some of the dialogue in the beginning was very fast - maybe just me. In the end, a great effort by Mr. Cooper and Ms. Mulligan. One or both of them will surely be recognized at the Oscars in some way.

It was better when it was in black and white it felt like i was watching a story, once it got to colour it felt like re constructed scenes out of a documentary or something, we were just listening in to conversations, there was no point to some of it and no plot. Carey was brilliant though

Bradley is trying to get his Oscar and his performance suffers because of it. You can tell he's trying too hard and it's cringe inducing at times. Oscar bait at its finest

One of the few times I disagree strongly with Dan. I found "Maestro" to be dull, sexless and pointless. No passion, and I have no idea what Cooper was trying to say. I didn't learn anything about life, love or Bernstein that couldn't have been learned by reading about his life.
Glad Dan got so much out of it, but to me it was one of the biggest disappointments of the year, since I loved A Star Is Born so much.
