    The greatest illustrator of all time. As italian I love his works about the "Divine Comedy" and the "Orlando Furioso" but I like very much the illustrations about "Paradise Lost", "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and "the Raven" too. A true visionary genius.

    I am working on a research from university about this excellent artist and I found your video very useful. I've seen it several times not only because the content is complete, also because your pronuntiation is clear and I understood every thing you said, and this fact helps me a lot because I'm studying english as well. Thank you very much!

    Love this vlog, Dan. Excellent.Not sure of the exact year(s), but I imagine on some level, Dore's interface with the prickly art critics possibly foreshadowed Le Salon des Refuses, or conceivably helped pave a path, maybe minimally inspiring independent new art movements. Poor Dad, an engineer, having to put up with his son's artistic malarkey, lol.

    the german writer Walther Moers (who is just awesome btw) wrote a book called "a wild journey through the night" which i highly recommend to anyone, he took 12 illustrations of Gustave Dore and wrote a story that kind of combines them or lets say he wrote around those pictures and the result is genius! its designed for younger readers but any adult will love it too, i read it within 6 or 7 hours without pause, he named the protagonist Gustave :)

    Where has this channel been all my life? I enjoyed your lecture very much. How do you choose your material?

    • @BookwormHistory
      @BookwormHistory  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Benny Palma Thanks very much, I'm glad you liked it! I choose topics in any number of ways. Sometimes it's a work whose story I'm already a little familiar with, sometimes (like this Doré episode) it's topics that I have a little interest in and as I learn more I put together an episode, sometimes ("Kubla Khan") it's viewer requests. I keep a list of potential topics which I add to as much as I can and when it looks like I have enough info to make a video about it I'll really focus on that subject.

    What process does he use for the Dante series (black and white illustrations)?

    • @BookwormHistory
      @BookwormHistory  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +NME10E Hello! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Doré used wood engraving on his "Inferno" series. He produced the drawings himself, then handed them off to an engraver, who would engrave the design onto a woodblock, which would be used in the printing. Doré was notoriously picky of which engravers he worked with, as the engraver has significant input into the final piece and Doré was very protective of his work. For "Inferno", as well as "Don Quixote", Doré used engraver Héliodore Pisan. It is Pisan's signature (as "H.Pisan") that can be seen in the "Inferno" prints, along with Doré's (in most cases in one of the lower corners of the pictures).
      Hope that helps! Later in his career Doré did used metal plates, rather than wood, as the metal lasts longer.
