@@ronisbackyardchickens5305 I’m crying with you.. I know that pain well, so very sorry. One of the things I like about your channel is how much you love your birds.. it shows and they’re so lucky to have that and the wonderful life you give them. RIP sweet Silver ❤️ I’ll miss seeing her
Im sorry for your loss. Ive experienced this too with my hen. I now give thrm lugols iodine in their waterers every time i change and fill them. Great for keeping disease away. Along with first Saturday lime
@ronisbackyardchickens5305 that's great! You know what you are doing ❤️. I had a hen last year that was simply sitting around and would let me pick her up. I thought, wow, she's used to me. Days later I realized something was off and so I took her to the vet. Sure enough, she was egg bound. An egg was stuck inside her. The vet said it was too late and the egg had broke and began to rot and it was best we put her down. It was difficult but she went to sleep peacefully. The vet told me when they have too much fatty treats, that takes away from the calcium they need to create a hard shell egg. Now I know the signs of a sick hen unfortunately I learned the hard way. The other day I gave my hens some bacon bits that I had chopped up. Sure enough the next day, one of the girls laid a soft shell. I have to learn not to give into fatty treats. It's difficult when I sit with them. They want everything I snack on. We live in the Santa cruz mountains and they are spoiled ladies just like yours. 😄
@@thinkandgoaloe2432 that's sad. We learn fast don't we? We checked everything with Silver. We think the molt was to hard on her little body. She had her first full molt. She was my little cuddle bug and was fine that morning. I came home from work and she had been pecked by the others. I have 3 cameras and that day I was so busy at work I didn't check them as often. My husband works from home and he didn't go out at lunch. I now check no matter what and he goes out too. She wasn't a very hearty breed either.
@ronisbackyardchickens5305 your a great chicken mama and did everything you possibly could. Yes we learn fast that's for sure. I am a cat mom too but I was kidding with my husband telling him I love cats but I definitely love my hens just a little more 😄

I use first Saturday lime also and deep clean the run and coop. None of my others were sick so I'm not sure what happened.
