People think that asking a homeless drug addict the wrong questions can be "traumatic." I think thats more projection than anything. Living on skidrow this woman deals with more trauma inducing things on a daily basis, than being asked a few questions she agreed to inside of a studio. Things happen to homeless woman on a daily basis in downtown LA that you could not even imagine. Nothing about this interview needs to be changed.

Geno Grinberg F*****ck! Somebody finally gets it! Thank you Geno. All these commenters sitting on their couches passing judgement have no understanding of the reality of street life, especially for females on Skid Row. I’m certain I’m the most considerate male this woman has interacted with in all her years on Skid Row, even with my probing questions. I can guarantee that every day on Skid Row she gets treated in ways that would scar these commenters emotionally for years. FYI, Kimberly asked me recently when she she can come back and talk with me again.

L W how do you know they don’t wan to face their issues?...maybe they don’t know how to. Lots of people, especially females that have been raped or molested have kept it bottled up. Not because they don’t want to but because they don’t know how to or they’re scared of the consequences. He’s not forcing these people into getting interviewed. He’s giving them the opportunity to tell their stories. Emotions, trauma can’t be bottled up they need to be released. This can be their form of releasing it.

I imagine that's why many agree to the interviews in the first place, or at least one of the main reasons. They know that they could disappear tomorrow and might never be found...this way their lives have been documented and can be remembered at least. Depressing to think about, but that's reality.

(To Mark Laita/ the interviewer @Soft White Underbelly) Regarding asking the interviewees about sexual abuse - In order to not accidentally retraumatize interviewees with your questioning, some suggestions:
Avoid asking about sexual abuse in or near the beginning of the interview, as enough trust, safety, & comfort likely hasn't been established yet.
And, very importantly, *never ask for details or prompt them to discuss more than they offer willingly; This is super important when discussing trauma with survivors if you don't want to accidentally retraumatize.*
(edit) I respectfully offer these suggestions, as I know you are trying to do good, so assume you would want to mitigate potential harm in any way. Thanks so much for doing & sharing these interviews.

I read some of the negative comments about Mark. Here’s my two cents worth: These are quick and to the point interviews. Most of these people can’t tolerate more than 10 minutes of sitting still and point blank questions. He is literally finding them on the streets of skid row and offering them a few bucks to get their story out to us. He is not a social worker. He is up front honest with them. Soooo, how’s about putting your money where some of your critical mouths are and do what he is doing? He is creating short insights on why people do what they do in segments that most you tubers understand. Far more good comes out of these interviews than bad. Stop your bad talking him and appreciate what he is doing for others to wake TF up about addition, abuse, loneliness, physical & emotional mental illness! I, for one, am extremely grateful to Mark and the people who bravely “put it out there” for the world to see! Bravo to all these souls and the lesson each one gives to us!

Beeintelligent Thank you for the support, Bee. I’m developing a very thick skin. As I said in this comments section somewhere, I’m learning and improving as I do this. To condemn me for making a mistake from an early interview where I may have made a mistake is like chastising a child for misspelling a word six years ago. Does he still misspell that word? Have I improved since this interview from last year? Absolutely, I have and I’ll continue to improve. I’ll add that I believe a lot of this hate is actually just misdirected anger from the shame these videos cause in us. It’s embarrassing what we’ve allowed our country to turn into and when some viewers watch these talks they want to blame whoever is closest and easiest (me) rather than do the hard work required to fix these huge problems.

Beeintelligent - yeah, bee. But there is a right way & a wrong way to go about things. Regardless of whatever his Credentialings/background is. He decided to participate I’m in this platform. And given his role, the burden of responsibility is more on his end. Oven binged one > 10 of these videos tonight (for the 1st time). And now have subscribed. There are some moments, if he just pull back a little. Then re-visit the question in a more delicate way. Or a different way in how he’s asking. He keeps trying to just get his question out. As if he’s a parent talking to a child. Or an Educator talking to a student. These are sensitive situations. And he has to just be careful how he goes about what they’re doing. Otherwise, he’s adding another detrimental layer to the situation. And may not be getting the optimization of what COULD HAVE been in the response. Which defeats the intent of this platform.
But I applauded the effort in developing & publishing this channel. These stories will stay with me for a long time! I have already forwarded a bunch to people in my circle. I’m now thinking of what more community outreach reform can be done. To prevent, protect, & remedy the people that can be saved; that do want the help.

@@SoftWhiteUnderbelly you havent made any mistakes whatso ever. You are giving us what we want to see, visceral reactions to difficult questions. Its what some of us came here to see. Personally, I watch tons of your videos, and i find it very intriguing the way you ask to the point questions and observing reactions. Based on my experiances in life, its always people who are upset that are the most vocal and its always controversial people/content that gets the most views.
Please dont change the way you phrase questions because some snowflake thinks theyre gonna hurt a homeless drug addicts "feelings." Thats ridiculous. Thats called PROJECTION, these youtube keyboard warriors are projecting their own feelings onto this woman. They dont live on skidrow, they dont realize that the last thing thats going to traumatize this woman is being asked a few questions about her past in a Studio after agreeing to answer them. SHE LIVES ON THE STREET. Whatever happened to her in the last 24 hours before you picked her up and whatever happened to her in the 24 hours after the interview, was much more traumatizing than any type of question you did/could have asked her.

Lisa Kiely Yes, these talks drain me after a day of listening to people one on one. The upside of this is that my empathy for others has grown tremendously this year because of these talks. Granted, some of these people are so self destructive that it’s hard to relate sometimes, but I try to see that their childhood traumas were the cause in most cases. I appreciate my parents great love and support more than ever now and I’m very grateful for that. I tend to be an extremist and not particularly risk averse, so taking on this kind of project is right up my alley. The fact that it’s so difficult, emotionally draining and dangerous only motivates me to produce more powerful talks in the future. Thank you for noticing how hard what I’m doing is. I had a friend I’ve made who lives on Skid Row sit in on a couple talks and his response was, “I don’t know how you can do this!”. I love doing the impossible. I always have.

Whether the person you interview sees it or not, that backdrop without the distractions and ugliness of the streets.. you put them at ease and sound relaxed, respectful, and when appropriate also a bit of humor..u give them a chance to share their trauma that hopefully at some point help plant a tiny seed to recovery...reminded me of Dr Gabor Mate and his extensive research on child trauma and addiction...th-cam.com/video/ojq-U13726E/w-d-xo.html..

I agree. He seems really insensitive and pries into areas that he can tell are obviously triggering or traumatic to bring up. Sometimes it’s good to talk thru things like that, other times it’s best to not drag these memories out of people who have tried so hard to repress them. A fine line.. I think if he softened his demeanor some it wouldn’t seem so nosy/exploitative and if he stopped pushing people to share on hard subjects. It’s one thing to lend an ear to someone who wants to vent but another thing to pry for the views.

What an innocent soul she has. I did PCP in the 70's and 80's. The first 4 or 5 years really heavy. I weighed 99lbs in 1978 and am 6' 2". It really does make you believe that you are on a different plane from everyone else and have a super important purpose directed by the universe. Coming down was very, very hard. It kept you high for 24 plus hours and then the divebomb. That's how you get addicted, the only cure for the crash was to do more. That's how a lot of drugs are.
