I totally agree! Nice painting. I attempted it this evening - bit ham fisted, but I've only started just before Christmas 😁 I think I'll do this again until I'm happier. Greetings from Portrush btw Marty!
Hi Peter, good to hear from you, and thanks - it normally takes a few attempts to get your head around a new painting - I’m writing this while listening to the winds howling outside - is it bad up the coast? I’m in the process of making more tutorials that’ll be right up your street - hopefully in the next few days I’ll have something new up
Hey Marty, wind wasn't just as bad the other night as it was on Sunday Matter of interest what paper size is that? 12 x 8? I painted this on A5 which is much smaller but definitely a different length / height ratio
A really good sea scape with the added attraction of you explaining what you are doing. I especially enjoyed watching you use that brush. I believe you called it a hake. I’ve never used that type of brush before but I like what you can do with it. Thank you for this video.
Thank you Robert for taking the time to leave a comment - the Hake should be pronounced Ha-kay but when I started using them back in the 90s everyone this end of the pond was pronouncing them Hake (like a cake) 😂 they are Japanese and were used as far back as 900 AD to paint lacquer on bow and arrows and bowls etc they don’t cost much and they come in various sizes - I use anything from a 1” 2” and a 3” in size - they are great for laying down washes, especially gradient washes.
Hi Marty. Many thanks for Art lesson. Well, I think your finished painting has much more character than the photo you showed at the beginning. Lovely artwirk, pal. 73
Thanks Pete, I never let a bad photo keep me from seeing the potential of what it could be in a painting “Artistic Licence” - I just renewed it this year 😂
Marty, I’m really enjoying your channel ! Lot’s of fun and I like your artwork and process. I’ve also been wondering about your paint palette?? What brand is it? I like the wells and amount of mixing space it has. Keep up the good work, I always enjoy when you post!🎨🖌️🌎✌️
Hi Daniel, good to hear from you - I have over a dozen paint palettes and half of them were made for me, but the one you’re referring to was one of several palettes I made myself - I did this about 10 years ago during a summer break, when I made about 4 of them - I love this particular one as it fits all my commonly used paints and the wells suit how I go about preparing for washes. It’s made entirely of brass which I braze welded using a chefs blow torch - I wish I had recorded the process - the most time consuming and expensive part was painting it, something I still don’t think I fully got to grips with. If I knew someone who could paint them professionally for me I would have done that for sure. I think I could have spent close to £200 (250 US) experimenting on the paint alone. The problem is getting the paint to adhere to the brass. I’m thinking of making another one next year if I get the time and will certainly think about recording the whole process. Normally to have any of the best makers in the UK make you one, you could be waiting for a year and they would probably cost near £400 (500+ US) - If it’s of any use to folk I could make a short video showing several of these brass pallets, which might give an idea of how useful they really are so that if you make one or are thinking of buying one from a maker, at least you’ll know what to go for. (Sorry if this was a longer explanation than what you were wanting :) And thanks for getting in touch Daniel
@@StormLampStudios Thank you for the reply! And I appreciate your in depth explanation 😀. That is very interesting! I have been interested in your palette every time I watch your videos. Great job making it! It looks like it would work and function very well. I would definitely be interested in seeing more of your palettes (but I’m kind of a palette nerd😉)… A video of you making one would be very interesting but I’m sure that would be a time consuming process. I really enjoy your artwork and I would also be interested to see and hear about your art gear and paints. Your doing a great job with interesting content and I look forward to your posts!! 🎨🖌️🌎✌️
Hi Daniel, I must confess, I’m also a bit of a palette nerd, I think on a subconscious level it’s my way of dealing with painters block, because when I’m painting and in the flow, palettes are the last think on my mind - then it’s paint and brushes 😂
I enjoyed this so much! My analytics told me my viewers were watching this video so that's how I found you : ) Your art is beautiful - what was that white pencil you used in the foreground?
Hi Rachel, really good to hear from you, the little white pencil thing I was using in the foreground was a Golf Ball tee Holder - it was all I could quickly find at the time :)
Brilliant. Please -I realize you must pencil in very lightly- but could you do this for us because it doesn’t show on screen Could you use a softer ? Maybe -an 8? It might not work for a painting but would possibly help us emmencely! Thanks for your consideration!
Hi Jini, I was just discussing that very issue with some folk today about using a stronger outline so that it can be seen on screens for people following along - I’ve a few wee videos to put up then I’ll start doing that on future ones - I normally use a very soft pencil - 4b or 6b and sketch lightly so that the paint devolves most of it, but I realise that doesn’t help folk who cannot see what I’m drawing - I might also use a higher resolution in future videos for those using a smaller screen.
That’s very kind of you An - hopefully in the new year I’ll have something sorted along with more videos to keep y’all going - Happy new year to you also An, and may it be a gooden :) x
Great demo; the Donegal accent just an added bonus!
That’s great Helen :)
It's very helpful to watch you work and explain as you go. Love this landscape. And your accent. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Thank you for taking the time to leave an encouraging comment:)
Marvellous Treat……just got up 7.00am so have the whole day to have a go. Thank you.
Thanks Janet, enjoy your painting session :)
This really was a treat to see another of your fabulous video pop into my subscription over the holidays. Thanks again!
Thank you kindly - I thought a wee art video would give you something to work on during the holidays in case you get bored eating turkey 😂
This is so great! I think I'll try it this weekend, please do more painting tutorials, they are so helpful and you are easy to understand and follow!!
Hi Annie, good to hear from you - there’ll be more on the way

Hello I like that painting .The first color you are using to give that brightness is it raw sienna ? Thanks from France
Bonjour Jack, la couleur que j'utilise habituellement pour cela est soit la terre de Sienne brute, soit l'ocre jaune
