poor Belaf had a pure heart. To pure really. Unable to cope with a harsh but necessary action to survive he went mad and lost himself ending up becoming something he himself would revile.
This. This is exactly it. Today I was rewatching and noticed taht the scene where he offered himself to Irumyuui followed after she was seen eating and absorbing the birds. Wazukyan says "looks like it's not enough for her"-- and that's when Belaf does his thing. Given that, he likely expected she would simply eat him. Instead, in an act Irumyuui must have thought was merciful, she gave him a form where he could live without guilt and act out his desires, so he essentially got an emotional lobotomy and lived the next 150 (or thousand+) year continuing to slurp children. And ironically Irumyuui probably did that because she cared about him. Their story and Vueko's with Irumyuui also, it's just heartbreaking.
@@lkkvins9071 I wouldn't call him a villain or anyone in the village villains either. They all desired to delve into the Abyss at whatever cost, to seek what they desired most at the cost of everything. However, nobody, not even Wazukyan exactly knew how much they would sacrifice for it and when it became obvious to what the cost was, they could only sit idly by and let it consume them. What Wazukyan and Ganja did was abhorrent, but it was the only thing they could do, and they all regretted the acts they did to Irimyuui. When they threw themselves into the barrier to transform, they thought it was a way to seek forgiveness by her, their supposed "goddess" and savior. They continued to worship her and thank her for her sacrifice, eventually shifting their worship to Faputa. Even as they live in the village, they all live as best they can, living by the laws of value that bind them together with Irimyuui. Belaf, even remaining as cold and distant for these 150 years after transforming still held onto his regrets and from the looks of it, his distaste for killing (as his greatest transaction was to find a food source that would not die given his cravings) stemming from the traumatic events of the past. Though it might be argued some are villainous in this arc, I can definitely say that everyone was a victim. Hopefully the coming episode Belaf and the rest of Ganja can have some closure with their past (be it with their deaths or another way).
@@13thEvilHamster i dont think she chose to give them other bodies and turn herself into a village, at the end she still hated them and didn't forgive anything, that said, i think it was the nature of the cradle that made her fulfill desires
Yeah, along it being implied in the memories he gave to Faputa, it curious how like Vueko (who gave names to the souls of Irumyuui’s children) he was also the other only villager who took care of the cute critters like his children.
So soothing. Just, perfection. I was falling to sleep when this video played next, I wish I could explain the way I felt but all I can say is, I want to experience it again, like the first time.
This scene gave me chills from the emotion and the setup. The mood of the song and the scene going from waking up from a dream to the significance of what's about to happen is extraordinarily natural and masterful. I feel like I've gotten used to MiA's storytelling, so it's spoiled me. But looking back (and looking forward at episode 10) has me genuinely impressed at how well they did the show. It's so fluid. It's honestly amazing.
Belaf is the most mystical thing I've ever seen in an anime. It doesn't need to be overexposed to convey all its majesty. The character design of Made in Abyss is out of this world and Kevin Penkin is totally indispensable to convey that feeling.
I can see all my life going in only two minutes thanks to this song. It was sadder than happy, but I still happy I exist to enjoy all those moments sad and happy ones.
SPOILER They transformed because Iryumiyuui had the power to mutate them. Belaf seeked forgiveness and offered up everything he had. Everyone thought they could be forgiven by Iryumiyuui, so they all followed suit and turned into hollows. Idk if that answers your question, but hope this helps

I love Belaf... The way he thinks, the way he talks, the way he acts....
And the fact he sacrifices himself twice: to Irumyuui and to Faputa...
belafs voice is so beautiful, makes me think he used to sing to iru...
i wonder if he's keep praying to irumyuui in pass 150 years......vueko might be right, if belaf saw faputa's broken arms he'll probably get mad
