The dialogue between the actors is what has always made this film one of my favorites.

What impressed me the most about The Thing was the timing the dialog. In one scene the primary actors are standing in a semicircle discussing the recent events in rapid fire dialogue. An amazing piece of work.

It's one of the best sci-fi horror movies of all kind. Minimal blood and gore, great storytelling.

Truly, one of the Top Ten, classic SciFi movies of all time!
One of my all-time favorites along with The Day the Earth Stood Still, Them!, and The War of The Worlds.

I always wanted to do a spoof of the final fight scene where the monster comes out of the shadows to reveal Marshal Dillon: "Howdy there folks! Sorry if I scared you. I'm just here to devour your souls while Festus feasts on your flesh."

Chris Nyby had been Hawk’s chief film editor. This was his 1st directorial assignment. The look, the pacing, the overlapping dialogue were all Howard Hawks’s doing. Ken Tobey told me Hawks didn’t want his name as far as director on a budgeted sci-fi feature so he let Nyby take the credit. Nyby went on to direct mostly TV. I also got to speak with James Arness who was kind of embarrassed playing the alien. He confirmed the movie was directed by Hawks. This was one of the few RKO features that Howard Hughes didn’t meddle with. Hughes had purchased the studio in 1948. Interestingly, he never had an office on the studio lot, but operated out of his headquarters in Hollywood at 7000 Romain Street. He liked screening RKO features in a large projection room at the Samuel Goldwyn Studio.

The Ground Control scene in Close Encounters is another great example. It was also used a few times in the original MASH film

A great film. One of the few of its kind where most of the characters make smart decisions given the information they had at the time. Most films like this have a lot of stupid characters who get killed (in albeit amusing ways at times) or get others killed. There is one curiosity that I observed only in recent years even though I had seen the film many times prior. The scene near the end where everyone is waiting for the creature to burst thru a barricaded door. If you watch closely, the creature DOESN'T burst thru the door. He just opens it since it swings towards him and then brushes away the 2x4's making the barricade useless. Don't know if the story tellers did this intentionally or overlooked that detail but it was a little amusing. People are a little surprised when I point out this detail as I was when I first noticed it. The tension of that part of the movie makes it difficult to notice.

My parents went to this movie taking 4-year-old me along. My mother got mad at my father because I couldn't sleep that night after seeing the movie. Until I get Alzheimers, i will remember her saying, "I told you he was old enough to understand the movie and get scared." I still classify it as one of the scariest movies I have ever seen, and I saw it many times on late night TV in the late 50's and early sixties.

Aired in 1959 as the "Movie of the Week". I was 4 years old. One of my earliest memories is playing after the movie and doing our version of the seeds in the opening hand scene. .
