the thing about Elliot’s boat scene is that you won’t even get that scene unless you’re already dating him and pursuing his ten heart event, so the assumption that you want to kiss your fictional boyfriend is kinda implied
Yes! But also after the trembling line and the option to say you’re uncomfortable can also put it in a different context, so I guess whatever option you pick can be interpreted in different ways.

Elliot straight up kisses you or whatever he did in a heartbeat without consent or a way to bail- there's a difference, sadly. :/
However, if you choose to say you're uncomfortable he immediately backs off and apologizes. I think he's just living with his head in the clouds- doing what he thinks is the most romantic in the moment. In real life obviously that's pretty toxic- but this is pretty clearly an idealized romance considering the whole "you're trembling" part. Your character doesn't need to have been written to do that in the first place 😂
It's definitely like an internal voice thing, I always read Elliott as sweet and caring, but just socially awkward when it comes to new people. But I see a lot of people think he's really a pretentious asshole. Also, about the boat thing, a lot of love interests do that. Harvey literally brings you up in a small airballoon thousands of feet in the air. Sebastian brings you to the middle of nowhere, Haley locks you in her room, Shane brings you to a city, you know nothing about. It's a weird thing to get mad about when Elliott is probably the kindest about the rejection.

THANK YOU!!!!! And besides everyone should be happy that Elliott is the only person we can express CONSENT to. Elliott is the only person we are allowed to say no to when they go for that first kiss. And again he takes it like a man and immediately backtracks. He doesn't get aggressive or anything like that. He truly is a gentleman.

I’ll admit it was a strange gameplay choice to only have that option for his event, it makes me wonder how Concerned Ape goes about writing them

Since this video is pretty much a why you dislike Elliott, here are my reasons for liking him:
1. I like the way he speaks.
2. He is very sweet, even before you marry him.
3. Follows his dream of being a writer even after you marry him.
4. He does become less of an asshole with others.
5. Has a bloody miniture crab in his pocket.
6. Cares for the enviroment.
7. Plays the piano.
8. He is pretty romantic.
9. Elliott is pretty much the typical love interest in a book and I've read a lot of books. He kinda reminds me of the book version of Howl from Howls Moving Castle.
And my favorite reason, he has long hair and long haired boys are extra cute fr

It blows my mind how people can be upset about Elliot kissing the farmer on a romantic date, after you've asked him to date you. 😭 Why are we assuming it's nonconsensual? If it is, you can tell him as much and he stops.
Literally some people have never been on a date or been spontaneously kissed and it shows. He’s not an alien facehugger, he’s a romantic date who’s kissing you and it even gives the option to reject him for it. I can’t with people.

I think it more of how fast and sudden it was compared to others with a slow kiss as well as the replies to can give him in that scene that just puts some off. Plus, different people move at different paces in their relationships. Also dude states he purposefully over exaggerates in this video to try to add to the commentary to make an entertaining video.
Reading all the comments hating on him for the way he talks or missing social cues confused me so much because I’m autistic and loved that about his character and it made him my immediate favourite.

Honestly, Elliot is the least problematic of the Stardew bachelors. Yeah he uses big words and is, honestly, socially inept, but once you marry him, he's pretty positive in general. There's no jealousy or codependency. He's low maintenance considering the only things you actually need to give him loved gifts is a crabpot and a pomegranate tree. As someone who reads a lot and also writes as a career, I find his dialogue pretty charming.

In all seriousness, I get the issues people have with Elliott, and this may be unpopular, but I never read him as pretentious when I played. Dramatic, yes, and a bit over-the-top, but I honestly took a lot of what he says as not quite knowing how to act socially, so his “gentleman act” is more a safety blanket. I compared the kiss on the boat Elliott does to the kiss the farmer does with Haley in her dark room - he just goes for kissing his partner on a romantic boat ride, which I (as the farmer) wanted for them lol.
He mentions later on that he’d been there for a year but didn’t really feel close to anyone and wanted a friend, and I got the impression it’s because people think he’s weird/probably too dramatic lol. As someone who got rebuffed for coming off as “too intense” or “weird” a lot growing up, I related.
I like that if you don’t like what he says or how he acts, he apologizes, and when you marry him, he’s an incredibly sweet husband. He compliments the farmer all the time on their talents/looks, expresses gratitude for what the farmer does, and helps out like the other spouses too.

Thank you for this interpretation! I’m one of those people who considers Elliot pretentious, and the scene with Gus always bothered me. Even if he doesn’t have many friends after a year, he goes to the bar every week; speaking to Gus that way when he’s already said that he’s busy, I just couldn’t bring myself to like this character (not even with the mindset that he’d improve his ways). But still, I always appreciate reading different perspectives on other characters to see if there’s something I was missing~ 😊

I don’t like Shane for similar reasons - it’s hard for me to get past how much of a jerk he is for so long, and even if you push through it, I had a hard time talking to him repeatedly when he very clearly tells you to leave him alone. 😂 like OKAY ILL RESPECT YOUR BOUNDARIES, GEEZ.
But true - not a good scene for Elliott. Trying to be chivalrous to the farmer, came off as insensitive and rude to Gus. Like Thor smashing the cup. ANOTHAAA.
Honestly, it feels like Elliott was written for all the girls who grew up wanting like a Mr. Darcy gentleman figure, and I totally fell for that lol.

I empathize with his struggles and would want to help him because he’s a human who deserves kindness and understanding, but I don’t vibe with the idea of romance with him. At least not without a long time where he works through his struggles while single.
Well, that’s just it, right? Elliot isn’t much different than a lot of male love interests in the romance genre. He’s literally designed to resemble Fabio, a well-known heartthrob character. I had a very warped sense of “romance” and how to “be romantic” growing up because of the way most media handles romance, especially the romance genre itself. Part of me wonders if that’s an interpretation with Elliot: maybe takes lessons from books a little too seriously without considering how those responses don’t always fly in reality. 🙂

I feel the same way. I'm quite pretentious myself. I've always had my head in the clouds and so I relate deeply with Elliot. He's got a good heart his friendship with willy is sweet. I don't think he's rich as much as he's poor but good at managing money. I mean his house is dusty as hell and small. He talks about crabs getting into his pockets and the like. He's like a Disney princess.
Elliot isn't my favorite but he is my first romance. Personally I'm a massive Harvey fan so my type is weird.

Agreed! The penalty for it isn't even that big. You can make it back in like, 2-3 conversations. I don't really like to marry Elliot, but you gotta give the man some credit where it's due, he understands words like "stop", is okay with them, acknowledges it if he goes too far and apologises immediately instead of making up excuses. 👌You gotta love a man who understands consent even though he's fictional.

He can take a no, doesn't take slights too much to heart, and is just a big ol' fuddy duddy once you look beyond how dramatic he can be. It takes a helluva lot of effort and love to keep being romantic with someone that consistently for that long as well. Especially after kids. It's why I chose him over Shane and don't regret it.

For some reason, when I first played, I instantly fell for him. He was so sweet, and I like the idea that he doesn't really know how to act more polite socially, because he grew up with an extremely posh family. I don't think him calling Gus "Bartender" was meant to be a "I'm better than you" thing or something, but it DID make me look sideways at him until I learned his full story lol.

Tbh I only just now learned that that was rude, I thought it was creepy to call workers by name if you aren't friends. Seeing as Elliott doesn't seem close to any of the other townspeople I assumed it would be seen as the normal title.
Honestly, to me he read as someone who is extremely bad at social cues due to coming from an upper class family and for spending most of his time on passions. Thus, the only real reference for normal interaction he had would be books and poetry, which aren't the best reference, I learned most my personality from movie and shows when I was younger and I came across similarly pretentious.

elliott's way of speech always seemed to me like someone who'd learned more from books than other people, truthfully. formal, flowery, unavoidably atypical, but not insincerely delivered. like, is it really pretense if it isn't an act? idk.

My thoughts exactly. The man is awkward, but let it not be said he was ever disingenuous. It seems to me that he must have led a charmed life before moving to the Valley. A rich family, very likely, but unsupportive of pursuing the arts professionally or at least, if it isn't lucrative. Wish CA expounded on his bg more. I truly think an air of mystique could have made him more likeable, even by a smidge. Or maybe the few lines that did describe his past *was* supposed to be that. Oof.
I always thought he had autism or a social disorder (lives alone in a shack, speaks to one person((maybe two counting willy)), has a strange way of speaking/missing cues, spends his days writing. Rather than communicating with people regularly he spends a lot of time writing and reading, you could assume that this has been a habit within his youth, thus he lacks the socialization skills that are important throughout the rest of your life)

Exactly! He's a lil out of touch with reality and social convention (a big awkward nerd after my own heart), but when you tell him directly what's up, Elliott doesn't hesitate to own up and improve. I feel like CA made him to be a very verbal, communicative, "say it like it is" guy, which is how I like 'em.
I like how during the ice fishing festival, he's like "yeah I'm taking part, though I know I'm not gonna win, it's just more fun the more people join". He's brave enough to compete, knowing he can't outfish the literal fisherman of the town just for the sake of having a fun competition for others to watch. It's not much of a competition of only 2 people fish.

The thing with Elliott is that while most of the other characters allow for more insight into who they are and thus let you grow to like him, Elliott doesn't change that much so if you don't like him from the start, you're not going to like him. People who don't like Elliott read him as very egotistical or classist whereas people who do read him as more poetic and socially awkward. The way that you read him will put biases in your head about his actions and intentions which is why he's considered controversial. Neither interpretation is given the chance to be proven wrong, and therefore it leads to people either finding him sweet and romantic or finding him rude and creepy.
If you dislike Elliott, there is never a change in him that will make you start liking him which explains why he's either adored or hated.

Very true, but I think he was talking about how it relates to all the other characters letting you enter their house. But seriously, Pelican Town needs to learn the art of safety, security, and boundaries. I can literally force feed Sebastian sashimi by breaking into his house, then his room while he's sleeping with no prior notice, and then walk up to his bed and bug him.
Elliott is literally my comfort character… i see him as autistic. His personality is very understandable. I struggle with socializing just like him

This is my exact same thoughts abt all of this, I feel like he's neurodivergent in some aspect, like getting immersed in his own interests as much as to give him a different speaking way, and how bad he is at getting social cues since he's always in his own world and basically only goes out to go to the library or buy groceries

The scene that gave me a negative impression of Elliot since 2016 is the bar scene with how he speaks to Gus. No matter how distant he feels with the town, he’s gone to the festivals for at least one year and is at the bar once a week. I refuse to believe he didn’t know Gus’s name; calling him “bartender” in some kind of grand gesture was an immediate turn-off.
With the boat scene, I think the big issue is that the graphics make the kids look sudden and unexpected. In Sebastian’s scene, I recall the line “you know what I’m saying, don’t you” after he confesses his feelings to the farmer. At which point, he slowly moves closer and the farmer moves to accept either a hug or kiss (depending on your interpretation). Seb doesn’t actually ask, but the visuals imply consent because of the farmer being okay to accept. With the Elliot scene, it’s quick and then the reaction from the farmer is either positive or “you’re making me uncomfortable.” Although, let’s be real: suddenly kissing the love interest without asking is a staple in the romance genre in all media. So, perhaps Elliot shouldn’t look to those kinds of books for relationship advice. 😂😂

Honestly I really wish they’d just change Elliot’s storyline so he says “Gus” instead of bartender and I wish the scene where he kisses you just has a bit of dialogue that goes “(farmer’s name)… can I kiss you?” And you have options for like “yes”, “no”, or “ew, no!”, and if you say yes then you’ll have the dark screen then the kiss, if you say no then he’ll just continue with your normal boat ride and lose no friendship, and if you say ew no then you lose friendship with him and the cutscene ends immediately lol
I honestly thought he´s just trying to be cool or something when he said "bartender", and make it sound more serious like yes we´re having some kind of date, not getting drunk af in a bar in the middle of the day
@@missliv.404 - I agree with your interpretation, but it doesn’t really change how it bothers me since Gus is clearly busy and his expression doesn’t reflect him being okay with being called “bartender.” Whatever Elliot’s intentions were, he was being rude and disrespectful of Gus’s time and of Gus himself.
Okay, so I feel the issues with him kissing you on the boat don't really hold up that well just because he said you two have been friends for a while. Hell, one of Shane's post-marriage dialogues is him asking what exactly you two are together, plus right after that scene you can ask him to marry you, he'll say yes, so it's definitely implied that you two have dated for a long time, long enough for him to not have to ask consent to kiss you. I feel like the main issue with that scene is the fact that one of the response options is that you're uncomfortable, and you tremble, and I feel like if it was handled differently and it didn't feel very implied that your farmer was uncomfortable, he wouldn't be nearly as disliked as he is.
Also, with the Gus scene, the man lives in a shack and hardly ever spends time in the town, do you know how many books and movies will refer to the bartender as 'bartender' if they're not an important character? A lot. My man just got that from his books and thinks he's being polite.
I get people not liking him, since, yeah, he can be really dramatic and over-the-top, but he's literally WRITTEN to be all poetic and over-the-top, you actively said that he's written to fit the starving artist trope, but are characters of that trope not dramatic as hell? Plus, he compliments you constantly post-marriage.
i totally agree with you on the implied uncomfortable-ness point. if that response option was added into other scenes where the farmer is kissed kind of out of nowhere--for example, sebastian's and harvey's--those characters would probably be getting questioned as well. elliot's cutscene should've just ended with the kiss, tbh.
@@laila9043 After I wrote this comment, I saw another commenter say how there was also the factor that Elliot's kiss was shown to be sudden, including the screen flashing when he kisses you, which no other bachelors or bachelorettes do, so it also makes it seem like he does it out of nowhere, but also kisses out of nowhere is a common trope in romance books and he's literally the starving artist trope so- I mean I'm not saying that if that was their first kiss and Elliot and the farmer WEREN'T dating for a long time that would be ok, but come on.
i disagree on the gus part he visits the saloon pretty often with leah, unless he learned how to speak to gus through Pam (and decided to forego his name) rather than literally anyone else he should probably know

It might be a cultural thing but where I live it rude and creepy to call someone their first name when you aren't friends especially when you only know them from their work like Elliott only knows Gus from going there they aren't friends or close at all.

I liked Elliot in the beginning because I imprinted on him- I was socially awkward, a bit dumb, ginger and an aspiring writer. I still am okay with him now, (I don't seem him as pretentious just asocial and ambitious), but I won't deny that he was the most boring romance interest I've ever pursued. Yeah once married he was sweet and loved dishing compliments, but there wasn't much story to him. I think he deserves a bit of a remake, and maybe then he'll be better.

Elliot was the first character that caught my attention, and I ended up marrying him. I absolutely dont get why there's any controversy at all, nothing he does or says seems weird to me. He's super cute and I love that he doesnt give up on writing after marriage. The kiss on the boat was not creepy, but a logical consequence. He's by far my favorite character in the game.

To give Elliot the benefit of the doubt, there are some interactions and hints that people give that has a hard time being portrayed in pixel art. Also idk why people think Elliot watching the farmer is creepy. Lots of spouses do that. Or he was gently wated farmer up which again is hard to be portrayed in pixel art.

i think he has a lot to offer and to make him stand out a bit, but everyone's entitled to their own opinions

i think the real issue with his 10 heart is there was one, no sign he was going to kiss you, which all of the other marriage candidates display, and 2 no way for the farmer to leave the situation. let’s take harvey’s 10 heart event which would be a similar circumstance (isolated place, no way to leave) harvey confesses but allows the farmer to decide whether to kiss him or not. with elliott’s that option doesn’t exist, you can merely tell him you’re uncomfortable. i don’t hate elliott necessarily, to me he’s just a boring character who’s mad pretentious, but his 10 heart scene is just uncomfortable.

He's literally the only romance option I've married that doesn't get angry at me or gives me the cold shoulder for telling him off.

When people get mad about his ten heart cutscene they always forget that you have to ask him to be your boyfriend to have access to that cutscene. You have to actively pursue interest in him. And that Harvey has the *exact* same situation, but with him you don't have an option to say 'no thank you', as if that's somehow better. Like, going by that logic Harvey is more "creepy" than Elliott. Sebastin also drives you out to the middle of nowhere on his motorcycle and kisses you. The only reason those two don't get called creepy for the exact same situation is that the fandom at large likes them, while a majoity fo the fandom dislikes Elliott for being unlikable or boring in their opinion.
The only reason people find it "creepy" when Elliott does it is because they already dislike him as a character, which is fine! You don't have to like him, he's an acquired taste, I'm sure! However, some people don't realize that you don't have to invent a reason for a character to be "problematic" as some sort of weird justfication to not like them. You don't need that, I promise. You can just be like "you know what I think he's annoying/we don't vibe well" and that can be that. I don't like Sebastin as a charcter but I don't call what he did creepy because the same logic of having to actively pursue him that I applied to Elliott applies to him as well. It doesn't just magically disappear when I don't like him.
Sorry for the rant guys! It's really fine to not like a character, I promise. It's just that this particular bit of "critiscim" always annoys me because it's so obviously hypocritcal, in my opinion. It also annoys me because it's sad that the fandom has made people think they need justifiable reasons to dislike fictional characters. I find it really confusing when people cite his 10-heart scene as why they dislike him because as far as I’m aware, Haley and Alex are the only two datable characters who *don’t* kiss you without asking. I could be wrong because I haven’t romanced most of the bachelorettes but it’s still a majority of them.
Saying the farmer has “no escape” from the boat implies that their boyfriend suddenly kissing them during what he thinks is a romantic moment is some totally shocking act, except he backs off if you say you don’t like what he’s doing. The only way I could see things the way people say they are is if the farmer had previously set boundaries saying they didn’t want to be either kissed or touched without being explicitly asked, except that’s not an in-game event or option. Could it be uncomfortable? Absolutely, but the farmer hasn’t said or implied to him they want to be asked first before being kissed and therefore he wouldn’t know that’s a boundary they have.
I've always thought this. It's easy to just say "I don't like this character" and that's it, there's no need to invent a criminal history. 😂
Personally I think he's not the most fun to romance out of them all just based off of cutscenes and stuff, but he's the best to be married to because he has some of the nicest dialogue and, in my opinion, the best 14 heart event

Elliot likes Ink, and then rainbow shells you can get right off the oceans, he does like most of the gems, the amethyst and the earth crystal i believe too. They probably take a longer to get his hearts up but it works

I didn't really see the 10 heart scene as being all that creepy or weird. Elliott knows what the bouquet means, it doesn't seem strange that he would want to kiss the person he's dating. He didn't seem like a pretentious jerk to me, but rather an artist who is so far gone in the world inside their brain that everyday functions are difficult. I found him easy to relate to, because I spend so much time in my thoughts that I've been labeled as cold and antisocial. I feel like he calls Gus "bartender" because he might not know Gus's name. Although he's been in town for a year, he deliberately isolates himself in an attempt to cure his writer's block. It's like he's trying to do things other writers have done to generate similar results, but he's finding that the approach other people take isn't working for him. He says he doesn't just want to be a lonely old hermit living by the sea, but he has trouble seeing that this is the narrative he's forcing on himself until you come along and force him to socialize lol. Your character also has him go outside of his box and do more things, making him remember how to actually talk to people. After a while he starts to drop the mask of an eccentric writer framing everything in dramatic prose and becomes more sociable and caring towards the town, loosening up while still remaining focused on his dream. He achieves that dream after adopting a way of life that suits him best, and gets that book tour! He's definitely more interesting when you spend more time interacting with him.

You don't understand Elliott at all. He won't let you into his house. Why?Would you let a wild stranger in just like that? It's not a bad thing, it's a precaution. Second, the way he talks to Gus is not condescending at all, Gus has a job as a bartender and how do you call him by his first name anyway? It's up to Gus to take offense or not. Thirdly, the fact that he has a writer's crisis is completely understandable. I don't understand what's wrong with Elliott just staring at the ocean all day. Fourth, what you find condescending about Elliott is not at all what it seems. He doesn't talk to you like that because he thinks you're a poor peasant, but because that's the way he talks. Ee has an attitude and pride, he tries to look good, he wears elegant clothes, the fact that he is sensitive to his hair is another matter. Everyone has their quirks. Fifth, he is at least talented in something other than writing, because he can play the piano. So even if his writing career didn't work out, he could still be a pianist. Sixth, what else would you talk about other than your book once you have a sense of success? At least he shares his joy with you, not sulking in the corner like the emo kid Sebby, because no one understands him. Elliott does not play the martyr that he has world pains, he stands on his heels and does fulfill his dreams. Seventh, he doesn't talk to you like someone he pulled out of his ass, he respects you and everyone else in town. For example, Leah and Elliott get together so often because they are both artists and understand each other's suffering. Eighth, the boat scene is really romantic, it's only scary for you that Elliott takes you to the middle of the ocean and confesses his feelings to you there. At least he has it in him to fix the boat....JUST FOR YOU!!! because he loves you, but you just whine that: "this is a psychopath who brought me here because I can't escape from here". Ninth time, even after marriage, he still cares about you, even if he has to go on his tour. He asks directly if it will be okay if he leaves? If you say no, he won't go on the tour, it all depends on you. Why? Because he loves you and doesn't want to leave you alone. He writes you a letter every day. Now I ask who the hell would still write to you EVERY BLESSED DAY to know what's with you and to let you know how he is doing. What is this if not fucking romance at the highest level???? Yes, romance is an important factor for us "elder"girls, but for you young people today, it doesn't mean anything anymore, this word doesn't exist for you and that's very sad. And lastly, Elliott at least helps around the house, feeds the animals, gives water to the dog or cat, fixes the fence and makes you coffee. Elliott is the MOST ROMANTIC CHARACTER in the entire game and you just call him a pompous asshole. This somewhere describes you, and this is your - "proof of poverty" as we say - that you think this way, it shows that you are still a child and cannot appreciate true love and romance. Alright so, about the kiss being uncomfortable I think its valid, sure, other bachelors also kiss you without asking first (And thats kinda ok even with Elliot since at that point they're your boyfriends), but Elliot's is the only one where the farmer starts trembling and has the option to be "uncomfortable", I don't think "being happy" makes you start shaking like that.
I believe if such thing hasn't happened, it wouldnt be so bad, but it happened and I dont think I like it lmao
I trembled out of excitement to my first kiss so it's completely plausible to be a thing. It was also a very sudden thing to happen but I still had excited jitters so the scene read completely natural to me personally as someone who experienced something extremely similar.

I did the rommance with Elliot, but the game doesn't translate well into my French, so he spoke normally, perhaps a little more sustained than the others, but as a writer, I thought it was normal for him to express himself "better".
