  • John Kennedy Jr. was American royalty and a cultural icon. His promise of living out his political legacy bequeathed to him on the day of his father’s assassination, was cut short over the Atlantic Ocean one July night. Kennedy’s death and that of his wife and sister-in-law, were the result of a series of bad decisions Kennedy had made during his last day. A day plagued by stress when his life depended on his ability to think clearly. Final 24 examines the string of errors that led to his tragic demise.

As someone with ADHD, I’ve learned, in order to avoid failure, to check and double-check every detail about the planning and actual execution of every endeavor. In hindsight, it’s pretty obvious JFK Jr. also had ADHD. His relentless curiosity, his impulsivity and creativity - it’s all very familiar for anyone with ADHD.
A big symptom of ADHD is chronic lateness (definitely speaking from experience). And rushing to be on time is when we tend to make mistakes, unless we’re hyper-vigilant. This is when John Jr., already running very late when they reached the airport, made his fatal mistakes: he declined a co-pilot; didn’t file a flight plan, didn’t alert his family on Martha’s Vineyard about how late they were running, and finally, chose to fly a (minimally) faster route over the water, which was infinitely more dangerous due to the weather/fog.
If only he’d slowed his roll, and taken a moment to breathe, he might have made different choices. Slowing our thoughts waaaay down is the only way for those of us with ADHD to fully evaluate the risks and rewards of our choices (our impulsivity can be a blessing and/or a curse).
My dad was well acquainted with John Jr due to NY business ventures. He told me he was one of the most humble, down-to-earth people he’d ever met, in business or otherwise. He was impressed by John Jr’s grace and humility in the face of so much public scrutiny.
Such a tragic ending for the Kennedys, as well as Lauren and Carolyn’s parents and John’s sister, Caroline.
    Truly heartbreaking.

I was thinking that John had adhd because my grandson has it. But when he married, it seemed like too striking a difference between the two. He needed an outgoing person like himself. Her brooding over reporters in public gave me a negative feeling about their marriage. But my heart broke when all three died in the crash. Now, we have only memories of John and wonder what all he could have accomplished. I was in 11th grade when President Kennedy died. So much tragedy in all the Kennedy’s lives. Take care.

He skipped so many warnings. Huge thing is to check weather and refusing a co pilot when he already knew he was going to be late he should have ensured he had an experienced pilot on hand and rung him back. Sadly his arrogance and belief in his own limited ability when he had a damaged ankle, painkillers, busy stressful day, darkness, light haze when he left, all added up to a bad decision that cost him not on,y his life but the life of two others.

Second, he did not take the direct ocean route, he followed the lights of the Connecticut coastline. Pilots have said that what happened to John, spatial disorientation, could happen to any pilot. WHEN YOU READ THE WORD "BETTER", IT MAY APPEAR TO YOU AS "BEETER". I think the brain signals between what you read and what you think you saw are not in sync. There's something that gets scrambled in the path of transmission between the eyes and the brain. JFK Jr. took the bar exam for an attorney's license 3 TIMES before he passed it. Dyslexia had to be why this happened. It was hazy at twilight when they took off, and not enough daylight to fly w/o having to resort to reading instruments on his plane's console panel. I remember that Saturday morning. I woke up, grateful I didn't have work that weekend, when the oddest thought jumped into my head. It was that a young, dark haired, celebrity was missing.... I remember laying in bed and rolling my eyes at such a dopey thing to think of. I finally got up, put on tv and saw "JFK Jr plane missing". My stomach sank. To this day I cannot explain it. Also, the night of 9/11/03, I had a weird dream that a sandy haired, blue eyed man was standing on a stage laughing, when all of a sudden he grabbed his chest and fell off a stage. I woke up on 9/12/03 to the news that John Ritter died.

I am both an RN and have taken pain meds many times. There are absolutely no circumstances that one should drive or fly while taking pain meds. Period.
I grieve for the girls' parents whom lost two daughters, as well as the entire Kennedy family. Maybe someone seeing this video coverage will cause them to remember not to fly when not instrument trained or while taking pain meds. ❤

You did not know John, none of us here knew him, his circumstances or how or why he acted so out of character on that fateful day. This video was meant to shine some light on this.
His mother had always tried to talk him out of flying. We might guess this is why his friends, the airport staff and all those who knew him, all shared the observation that he was scrupulous about safety and assessing his aircraft beforehand, and during flying. He also usually had another pilot flying with him, long after he was required to. This indicates he was erring on the side of safety or behaving with an abundance of caution. Neither of these actions reflect the behavior of a "hot head".
This overview of his last 24hrs layed out the many high stressors he was dealing with at this very moment in time. He was facing the very real possibility that he was losing his wife and losing his business.
He lived his life under both a microscope, and the high expectations of his immediate and extended family to follow in their footsteps to politics, as well as the entire world being infatuated with him, to the point the paparazzi was always a few yards away. We can only imagine the pressure he lived his life under, and especially on this particular day. It is made clear that he acted out of character on this late afternoon. This is the very reason for the overview.
To paint him as a hot head whom flew by the seat of his pants, and even insinuating he "had it coming" is both irresponsible, unkind and insensitive.
