Hey! The second cuts better because the 3 band preamp and is more versatile, but the 77 is the classic iconic sound of MM. I prefer the 77 one, of course.
'The '77 slap sound kills.Always has and always will.I have a '77 sunburst which I treasure.Although I like the stability of the neck joint, the tummy cut and weight reduction I will stick with the older string through anyday.
I am currently obsessed with 'Rays after being a Jazz bass enthusiast since '01 haha. I have a 'O4 model on lay away. I bought it because of the pure potential and knowing I can make the thing do the things I like, sight unseen. I haven't gotten to play too many of the earlier models, but I agree that I absolutely love how the 77 comes up with slapping. Any tips for a JB guy making the transition and things to look out for, etc?
@@BARTFUNKBASS I kept the old jack and batter wiring in place, and just wired them appropriately. I needed to look at the EB and the East wiring diagrams to connect the right wired.
You're one of the best bass players on the Internet. After listening to your skills I'm insprired to practice more. To my ear, the '77 is more soulful and has a mellow, smooth tone. I love it!
Great playing!!! You can't go wrong with either one to my ears!!! I love my 2018 Stingray 5 H Special!!! One of my favorite things about the StingRay is no matter how the EQ is set, it still sounds like a StingRay!!! The 3-band offers more tonal versatility though. This bass was a GAME CHANGER!!!
I notice a couple of tonal differences, I acknowledge the '77 is the "original" tone (which many say has "more mojo"), but the modern tone is so great as well! I think the original has that more "woody" and a bit mellow tone. The modern one sounds tight, present and retains all the good of a Music Man tone, so in the end you can't go wrong with any.
There is no doubt that the 77 Stingray is a classic bass.but in terms of ease of ues, i still prefer 92 Stingray with intermediate frequency adjustment!!! nice video, thanks ANDY!
However, the 92 isn't simply the same preamp but with midrange adjustment. It's an entirely different preamp with different frequencies for the bass and treble as well.
Hmm... Great playing and nice recording quality! But why did you keep the mids boosted all the time on the '92? I think it was not a fair comparison like that. No wonder why the '92 sounded way more mid-heavy compared to the '77. But based on other comparisons, I guess I'd still prefer the '77's 2-band EQ because of its shelving bass (the 3-band doesn't boost the lowest bass) and the way the treble knob responds. However, having some control over the mids is a really great thing. I was actually interested if there what the differences between the pickups were. Do you know if they have the same specs (i. e. magnets, construction, resistance)? They changed a lot in the recent years, but I'm not sure when they started to change them.
There’s a luthier on the sunny coast that specializes in repairing pre eb stingrays. He makes necks and preamps also. He really knows stingrays backwards, you should look him up.
Hi Andy 👋 I own a Black Ernie ball Music Man stingray bass guitar and I love the way it plays and sounds all I need is a Ampang ba 210 bass combo amp ❤🎉 hi honey 🍯 😀 😊 😄
I have a 2EQ '89 and I think it's just a bit easier to fit in a mix, especially recorded. BUT I think the 3EQ cuts better live. Depends what you want, but personally I love the 2EQ best.
Awesome demo! I’m looking at trading for a 77 and trying to figure out if it’s worth 4K. Sick playing. I’ve played with this backing track a million times haha
Wow, congratulations!! One question; I would like to know if the Sting ray ernie ball made in San Diego that I bought in 1992 has a ceramic or anico pickup. A luthier ruined the pickup and I'm looking for a bass that has it. I live in Spain and it is not easy to find a 92 Sting Ray.
@@Fortimen I have a '92 fretless. The pickup was so bright and I was not sure I liked the tone. So after some research and contacting Ernie Ball I found out that 1992 was the first year they (for some reason) changed the PU type to Ceramic.
I have to say I prefer the sound of the 2EQ preamp. It's just that bit easier to sit in a mix, but if you want to jump out - especially live, then the 3EQ is NEVER GOING TO BE HIDDEN!!! Apart from that I think they're all good - fair play to Ernie Ball, they didn't lower the quality at all.
You are a great player, but your video comparison is not really working for me. Very much like your video on flats vs rounds you play too long on one bass or (set up) and its difficult to hear the differences rather than if you played short examples of similar riffs and tone settings switching back and forth from bass to bass.

Your playing on the demo after you talked was SO DAMN GOOD!!!!!! i nodded my head through it all brother

The earnie ball sounds amazing, a solid 8. The MusicMan is excelent, a perfect 10!
They both sound good.
I just installed the John East preamp in my '92 to try to get that old school mojo.
Hi! I'd like to do the same! Could you tell me what did you do with the old input jack? Do you have any pictures or audio before vs after?
There’s a 3 and a 4 knob version of the Musicman John east preamp so you should be fine.
I personally tried it on a 90s Musicman and was nice 👍

@@andysvintageguitars2335 Yeah, I got the 4-knob with the sweepable/defeat-able mid and I'm happy with it.

I have a 2 band 92, black with maple board. THE BEST.
Have the same but 91.
the difference is pretty huge to my ear 70's sounds way deeper
Cool! what strings on them?
Along with my Fenders I own a 3 eq Mm 2016 and it's superb. I like both but prefer the 92 it's more out there unmistakable MM sound
I own Sterlings. A Ray 35 and a Ray 34ca. I love the 34ca because the sound is more to the 77

Fair enough ❤❤❤

Both sound real nice but a nod goes to the 77' because it's the holy grail of Stingrays. Same goes for the radio knob basses from 76'.
The '77 by a mile

92 all day. Ive had a number of both of these. Btw, if you are gonna slap a 3 band you want the mid flat.
Nice video!! Do you think the Sterling Sting ray 34 has the same pickup and electronics as the Sting Ray 1992? I need a pickup for my 92.
Thanks for a great demo ! The 77 seems to have the warmer tone, finger picking style. That was some nice playing also !

The advantage of a three screw plate is that you can tilt the neck
I'm fuc..n' lucky ! I have a 1980 one with string thru and 4 bolts back plate ! Unfortunately I feel neck's profile slightly thinner than olders...

Lucky 77 😉👌
truss rod adjust is different as well
Yeah, that changed in 1989 👍

What is your all time favorite bass?
The Harley Benton MM84A has two pickups and is way cheaper but still sounds awesome.
ok
Lol
The newer one sounds better
