Alan Entwistle pups are great. These seem to have a tonal character of their own that mimic Tele, Strat, and Red inspired tones. I'm digging it. As for how it sets while sitting, it is meant to be on your left leg to be in "proper" playing position.
Alan Entwistle is probably the most interesting guitar designers working today. His body shapes great, his pickups are the best and his willingness to play with combinations of classic and modern is second to none. And he does it all at reasonable prices!
HI Andy. I'm really liking this design from Vintage/Wilkinson - it's good to know there are companies doing things differently from the mainstream... In regards to the playing position, I always tell my students to use a strap, whether sitting or standing, then the guitar is in the optimal position every time (one less thing to faff about with) 🙂
@@southernpanda33 you are correct that the company have plenty of left handed models, however none of the new models such as the one being reviewed here, are available left handed as of yet.
Love my V6, this seems like a good spot to land for someone who can't decide on a Tele or an offset for their next acquisition. I'm very tempted to sell a couple dust collectors.
The springs in the back were a real surprise to me! Nice to see this kind of stuff on affordable guitars. This looks and sounds really cool! This guitar with P90s would be an absolute rock-n-roll machine.
Actually, it would probably be GIbson since they recently acquired the right to make the Brian May signature guitar. Though I'm hoping its set to where you can still get the one sold by Brian May Guitars website. Those are somewhat obtainable at $900 USD. After what Andy said in his Week in Gear video yesterday about the pricing of the Johnny Cash guitar, I have a feeling the Brian May signature will also be made of the same unobtainium.
@@dbmabe I didn't know Gibson had acquired the rights to the Brian May guitar. Bad news. Guild had a go at producing a version of the Red Special many years ago. It wasn't available for very long.

good to see Vintage doing cool guitars again , they used to do some awesome metal V's and crazy shapes that played great for sensible money. (I think it was metal axxe series??)
First, @theguitargeek, thank you for making these videos. I love them. Secondly, while I'm sure the brands that send you gear to review have data, an anecdote can't possibly hurt. I'm a noob guitar player and am learning on an acoustic. I've been trying to decide what should be my first electric guitar, and I loved the sound of this guitar in this video so much, that I contacted the only store in my area that is a Vintage dealer. Did you know there is at least a 4-month backorder for the orange version? I loved it so much that I ordered it ($450 US). So now I have at least 4 months to get good enough to actually use my first electric guitar when it shows up. I am probably making a mistake buying something without trying it, but...I couldn't help it. Again, thank you! And, #vintageguitars, it worked. You sold at least one guitar because of this review.
Truthfully I love it! But then again I've always liked guitars that were "different". The vision, ie "one vision"? None the less I think it's amazing, sounds great, and I am truthfully interested in what the motorcycle springs bring to the overall sound of the instrument. I think it's an absolute win! Downside for me, not too many Vintage dealers here in the USA... but if I happen to see one, I will have to sneak it into the house with the rest of the "too many" guitars I already own! LOL Thank you for the video Andy, and for all that you do!
Vintage are some of the best affordable workhorses on the market. I sold my Gibson LP and SG and replaced them with their Vintage counterparts. Maybe I'll hit up their "custom" shop some day 😎 This looks quite cool, I'm just not sure about the 3 pickups - I have to make a conscious effort to change my picking style/position on any guitar with a middle pickup...
The guitar shop I teach at is a Vintage dealer and, as you pointed out, they all tend to have a larger neck radius. That's been my reason for not getting one. They are great guitars howeverr. We had a Tele style Vintage that had a relic job on it that I almost pulled the trigger on.
Those round, warm clean tones make me think of Harmony and Burns guitars that we sold when I was a teen. To my ear, it sounds best clean, and isn’t really a rock guitar at all.
Man, that thing sounds great! As you said, sort of a fat Tele, but it’s got clarity as well. I’m not crazy about the shape, but I’ve seen a lot worse, and since I always use a strap, and I wear the guitar a little higher than you do, that short-waisted body shape wouldn’t be a problem for me. I just think it’s kind of squatty. I’ve downloaded Vintage’s Revo catalog, and I’ll have to see if they offer a different shape with those pickups. But I could play that one just fine, and I like the orange with tortoiseshell. I’ve got a G&L ASAT Z-3 in that color scheme, and I’ve seen it on early Gretsch 6120s as well. Very cool guitar-I hope Vintage has US distribution.
The In-between settings sound very like a Strat to me, which is not my thing at all so I would modify it so those settings were in series not parallel. Nice guitar though and good to see something a bit different.
I had never heard of the Vintage co. but I bought one of their double cut Jr. style guitars for right about $300 as I recall and I like it very much. The P-90 sounds "fatter" than my Gibson Re-Issue Jr. Good quality guitar at a great price, I'm going to have to give one of these a spin if I come across one on the U.S. West Coast. I got the Jr. in Ohio and it's the only Vintage I've ever seen until now.
Really interesting guitar! Sounds great, and looks cool and very coherent. Only if you know a couple of guitar designs, you can see _many_ influences. There's some Red Special, some Tele, some Strat, some Les Paul Special, even some Yamaha Revstar.
It looks nice and sounds nice, but I'm a bit dumbfounded by the spring cavity and its role. It might have been interesting doing a with/without sound comparison.
Vintage guitars are decent, I've got the Thomas Blug "Monterey Hendrix Paintjob" S-Type. Granted I bought it used, so it needed a good setup and some sorting, but I flippin' love it now! The Wilkinson hardware is good, so much so that I have no intention of replacing the pickups. Maybe the tuners tho...
Its weird buy I didn’t notice the tele control bar at all until you mentiond its tele-ness. I think that speaks to how originally it all hangs together as a package. It looks like a fully realized guitar. Like one thatcould have become a standard if it came out of fullerton in the 50s.
Even the headstock doesn’t look like an awkward work-around of the Fender design. It just has a nice pleasing angle/curve. I think if I had any money at all, I’d seriously consider one of these. and maybe that color too.
Usually not a fan of such unique vintage guitars but for the price this thing looks like some character I could get used to playing without thinking of how light my wallet feels now.
Wow, I’ve never really liked the look of the Brian May guitar that much, but this one looks original enough that I like it. But what I came here to say was that EVERY tone you got out of of it elicited the response in me “Yeah, I’ll have that one.”
I am pretty sure that these are based on the Burns type of pickups like the Red Special. I have GFS Brighton Rock pickups and they are GFS version of a Burns. So they are a but beefier than a Strat pickup, so less of a glassy tone like Strat pickups have.
Love the neck. The tele styled bits are cool, too. Pickups sound great. But the body proportion is too small. Seems like something a bit closer to 339-sized, rather than LP-sized, would be cooler.
Very much appreciate the demo. Alas, I tend to scrape and flub with middle pickups. Yep, sure, that's my bad technique, but my technique none the less.
Reminds me of the Fender Cyclone as that had Jaguar pickups, but then again that also had a Strat tremolo. (There is a Squier version but that has Strat pickups instead)
I am not surprised that you went with Orange, haha It sounds badass. But I don't like those tuners. I am surprised by the pickups. For this price point, it sounds amazingly clear.
I had a vintage sg. It was without any doubt the nicest guitar I've ever owned, the action was incredibly low without a single buzz anywhere. Sold it like an idiot
My initial thoughts on this guitar is that it looks like a Brian may guitar. Nothing wrong with that as I like his guitars. I like orange and I like binding on a guitar. and the price is right I'm not a Fender Stratocaster guy and one cosmetic reason is no binding, I much prefer the Telecaster, especially if it had a tremolo. As far as tuning goes, with new strings, I give each one a few pulls and then I tune it up. I'm guessing you already know this trick.
A little bummed they don't offer this in red, but it's definitely a unique guitar. The original Tri-Sonic pickups were made in a pretty interesting way, so I wonder how close Alan Entwhistle came to that construction for this guitar. Although at roughly half the price of a BMG Red Special, it's hard to complain about much.

I’d call that headstock a cross between Strat and Peavy. Don’t like how it sits on the lap. Needs a strap all the time. Basic tone pickups. Good sound but nothing special on clean. Nice bit of attitude from the pickups. Better with the compressor on. Yup needs that touch of reverb. Shows the difference between a cheap amp and an excellent one. For those who want to purchase a guitar and amp my recommendation is a lower cost guitar, new nut if plastic, new strings if cheap junk, and importantly A SETUP. For you kids starting guitar a setup to make it very playable is VERY IMPORTANT. Most kids who give up on their guitars do so because they are hard to play. Get the best amp you can afford at the time not a bundle amp. Even a cheaper guitar can sound great through a good amp. The Boss Katana has been a good go to amp for beginners and lately there are several that compare favorably. Remember you can get a cheaper guitar for under $200 get a setup and change to quality pots and pickups to upgrade your sound at a later date as you expand your skills.
