Sonny Liston hit and hurt Cassius Clay (Ali) many times in this fight. Going into the seventh round one judge had Liston winning the fight, the other had Clay slightly ahead and the referee (third official judge) had the fight even. In Round 4 Liston hit Clay with two vicious punches to the face. Watch and listen to these punches here th-cam.com/video/W4IKMX-5JLk/w-d-xo.html . One of them appears to smash into Clay's open eye. It is at this point Clay experiences some difficulty with his vision. Liston connects to Clay's face several more times in this round. There is zero credible evidence that Liston had an illegal substance on his gloves. Clay's "vision difficulties" were a direct result of Liston's power punches to Clay's face. Folks forget that Cassius Clay was so hurt after Round 4 that he told his corner he no longer wanted to fight. He screamed at Angelo Dundee to "cut off my gloves" so he could quit. These statements were heard by many at ringside and admitted and confirmed by Dundee later. This is when they spinned the false story of an illegal substance on Liston's gloves. To Clay's credit and Dundee's refusal to stop the fight Cassius came out in Round 5. Liston dominated Clay in probable 10-8 fashion. Clay fought well in Round 6 with Liston landing the final punch of the fight. The official Miami Beach Boxing Commission physician Dr. Alexander Robbins later confirmed Liston had torn a tendon in his shoulder, rendering him a one-armed boxer.

@@ammarshah7997 I recognize Muhammad Ali was a beloved and celebrated figure beyond reproach in most folks' eyes. In many ways he lived up to his nickname, "The Greatest". You may have tried to dismiss my comment with a chuckle but a laugh is less than a weak argument. It's no argument at all. My comment was based on facts and evidence. Truth, facts and evidence are hard to swallow for obdurate believers in myth but at least I brought a smile to your face.

A badly beaten, humiliated and exhausted sonny Liston retires on his stool. Rematch, Liston retires on the canvas after being rocked by Ali’s counter right over listons lunging jab. Liston basically ran right into it.
No one blames Liston for not wanting to continue both matches. Ali works have murdered Liston. Especially the rematch.
