- Hello everyone! In this tutorial I thought I’d share this technique with you. It think it’s one of the best technical tips I can give you. If you manage to master this technique you will be able to fly over the fingerboard with fluidity and feeling solid. This technique will seem invisible when done properly, and I think it will become one of your best tools to get your playing to the next level!

I've learned it two weeks ago on the violin! 😁 it's an advanced shifting technique.
It's important and necessary to practice it very slowly at first.
Esta técnica es la opuesta a la "extensión". Yo le llamo "retracción" de la mano o de los dedos. Además si se combina con la técnica de los "impulsos" o "articulación" (lo cual significa elevar un poco más el dedo que va a tocar la nueva nota, antes de que caiga, es realmente fenomenal). Esto se aplica también al violín. Se combinan la flexibilidad y el gran rango de movimiento del meñique (que es considerado un dedo débil, pero de este modo se torna uno de los dedos más extraordinarios). Hermosa ejemplificación Pablo. Eres un extraordinario-super-mega chelista. Aunque soy violinista, me encantan tus videos. Sigue adelante compartiendo todo lo bueno. Hola Pablo te escribo desde México, Wow es una tecnica muy interesante se podria decir que llegas al revés, como una vuelta hacia atras, además de menguar el camino, le generas potencia al dedo más débil y se escucha increíble, esta asombroza gracias por conpartir tus tips, Yo soy arreglista y siempre les dejo a mis alumnos ver tu super canal, también toco el cello, felicidades nos has acercado al mundo de concierto mas cerca.

Thank you so much for explain it so clearly. I have been demonstrate this tip for my students , but the way you articulate is so much easier to understand. Very valuable five mins video. May I ask what's your left hand index finger shape when you play minor 3rd double stop with 3rd finger on thumb position ? For example, double stop B flat and G on thumb position.

I´m just wondering how your thumb can force against, without pain. It´s audible that fingers can beat the strings on fretboard.
I coldn´t press the strings too long because my thumb will give up and I have to stop playing or my fingers become too slow.
Do you have tricks for that?
I really want to improve my shifting accuracy and this technique seems to be the way...how would I start working on this technique...any particular etudes, scales or method books to recommend?

Hola, si muy buen consejo, pero veo que mantener la afinación del dedo uno se hace compleja o solo soy yo.

i will dare to do a suggestion to you. Have you saw that chinese violin called erhu (is not a chinese cello =v ) that does not have a tastiera?
well, it's my example for my students of how is not necessary to get the finger ON the tastiera. if you do the harmonic 1st position 3rd finger (4th on the cello i believe) and gradually start adding pressure, the sound will go from harmonics, to trashy, to clean. and if you did it gradually enough, you'll realize a clean tone appearse before your finger gets the tastiera.
if you continue with the pressure you'll realize that sound does not becomes cleaner, and if you go on pressing harder and harder till it hurts, hearing that sound does not gets cleaner with pain, you'll realize how pointless waste of energy that is.
So, if you are used to do a little bit of that waste and you play a beautiful mozart sonata but you get tired by the cadenza of the tchaikovsky, and you're exhausted by 3rd mov. Check this cause i'm sure that your arpeggios are just fine.
Now, sure cello it's diferent and for sure there is no trouble with Dvorak or Elgar, you nailed it, but man.. your fingering is as loud as your notes. And all bodies are different and our stamina is not the same, but i bet my violin that with age you'll have to rethink your technique
