      Fecal particles should bother you. Pretty much everything you do in a bathroom means you are clean when you leave. Wasing hands, bathing, scrubbing your teeth... all cleansing. You probably inhaled more fecal material whilst shitting (proximity, convection of matter from the plopping of the pooping, your face over the main venting gap on the toilet seat. Your hand scooping out clouds of fecal rich air as you clean your arse. Your nose and tongue are chemical analysers. They are not psychic. They don't use radio waves. The chemical, your fecal matter, needs to make contact with them to register. Any time you smell shit, even a fart, you are consuming shit. And mostly it's harmless. So worrying about 'the plume' when you flush is pointless.
      Just was your hands.

    • @TheLittlestViking

      I once lived in a house, and one of the disclosures that they had to make to us when it was purchased was that there were two bodies in the yard but that "it was okay, because they'd been investigated and it had been determined that the burials were at least a century ago."
      And I had a friend who was gifted a real human skull (legally - it had certification paperwork and a registration and stuff, apparently that's a thing) for her 50th birthday. She went on a three month trip about a year later, and was worried that if someone broke into her place, they might steal the skull, so a couple of our other friends 'babysat' it for her while she was on the trip.
      Life and death are both weird.

  • @evilwelshman
    @evilwelshman ปีที่แล้ว +67

    10:15 To Answer Simon's question about whether you need to report to the police if you find a skull in your garden, the answer is very much a *_YES_* . From what I can find, it can take as little as a few weeks for a body to skeletonise (depending on environmental conditions). Even if older, it is entirely possible that it could be from a cold case. There have been instances where new occupants at a property discover human remains (typically, human bones) that help uncover / solve old murders that had been committed by the previous occupant(s).

    20:08 "Caesarian" derives from the Latin word for "cut". As I recall, Julius Caesar inherited his surname from an ancestor who was delivered by the method (rather than the procedure being named for him). Ultimately his surname went on to become the title of Rome's emperors and transferred into other languages as "Kaiser" and "Tzar" among others.

    I grew up in a house that had a barn used as a hospital during the Civil War. We had an acre sized garden and would find teeth, pieces of bone, coins, minnie balls (bullets), etc tilling. Even a knee that had obviously been amputated. Just a few weeks ago a crew digging footers found an old skeleton. It was determined to be "at least a century old" and work continued after the remains were moved to a nearby cemetery.

    • @robo5013
      @robo5013 ปีที่แล้ว

      First construction site I worked at, in the early 80's, was an old plantation in York County, VA. When clearing the land a skeleton was discovered near the creek that surrounded the property. Work stopped and the police were called, who called historians from Yorktown Battlefield and it was later discovered to have been an African American male in his mid to late twenties from the 1800's. Several weeks later when cutting in the road to the property a large carved stone with faded writing was found. Had to stop and repeat the process as it was thought to be a head stone. The historians determined it was an old boundary marker that had probably been in the middle of what became the main highway that the property bordered and was probably just chucked to the side by workers when they were constructing the road.

    In the UK you are legally required to report any human remains you may discover. Even if they're found at the bottom of a grave in a former graveyard. We had this happen in 2012 when our neighbours wanted to do some digging on our boundary to check on the integrity of their underground car park. They were told that the ground around the church is a former graveyard, and this was a risk. The very first hole they dug opened the grave of a child. Even though the skeleton was at the bottom of a brick burial vault capped with a slate slab, we still had to call out the police and have them verify that there was nothing suspicious going on. Not coincidentally this was also the last hole the neighbours dug.
    On a related note, if a body is found part way down in a grave, that's a really bad thing. I knew a Vicar who had a case where a planned funeral was disrupted when the double grave was re-opened and they found a skeleton wrapped in black plastic bin bags three feet down. Needless to say the body was very much not supposed to be there.

    5:50 Maybe wash the sponge on the top rack of the dishwasher, so the high temperature wash sterilizes the sponge. And, when you rinse and then squeeze the excess water from your sponge after each use, and then let it dry thoroughly, it kills all of the microorganisms that were in it. This is because even those little critters need water to live. So, drying the sponge in between uses keeps contamination to a minimum. And when you give your kitchen sponge the heat treatment once a week, you'll have nothing to fear...as long as you don't use the sponge elsewhere.

    I have 20 sponges and not one smells. The newest one is espresso machine grouphead only, the next steam wand only the next outside of the machine only, the next is only good enough for kitchen counter, the next is kitchen sink and dishwasher seal, then comes dining room table and gerenal surface sponge, kitchen floor sponge (and mop) and only then comes bathroom sink sponge, tub sponge, seperate defoliating sponge because I'm cheap, then I bathroom floor mop, then and only then comes the toilet sink sponge, toilet seat and cover sponge and finally at the very bottom the oldest and grosest, the toilet sponge for the inside. Each sponge begins at the coffee machine and progresses through it's life down to toilet sponge.
    Except for the last one which I haven't smelt haha they all smell nice. Because each one is always dried fully between uses. If your sponge stinks it didn't dry properly and is full of bacteria, billions, an entire ecosystem lives in a smelly sponge. How anyone would even touch a smelly sponge is beyond me. Remember kids, a dry sponge, is a happy sponge.

    The nightmare death thing, I'm quite surprised there was no definitive cause of death found. The victims were sleep deprived which can already screw with lots of your physical systems including heart rate and blood pressure. I think it's pretty obvious that a severe shock after being in that state probably caused either a heart attack or brain hemorrhage.

    About 50 years ago they were laying new water pipes through a corner of my great-grandfather's field. While the excavator was digging, they noticed a skull. When they dug a little more carefully, they found the entire skeleton of a Turk with a flintlock pistol and a scimitar buried in a sitting position. Great-grandfather found a wooden box at home, packed all the bones, weapons and rings in it, and buried it under a tree next to our family cemetery. They didn't call the police because the Turks were expelled from our region 150 years earlier.

    ChatGPT got a question I asked it straight-up wrong the other day. I was chatting with a mate in media class about people who have achieved 'EGOT' status. An EGOT being an acronym for someone who has won all 4 major media awards. An Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. I asked ChatGPT to tell me who had won it and it said nobody ever had, followed by a list of around 6-7 people who had won 3, but were missing one.
    I knew this to be incorrect, so upon looking for the answer the conventional way I found out that in fact 18 people had won it. That included every single person on the 'almost' list that ChatGPT gave me. It surprised me that it could get the answer not just wrong, but SO wrong that it literally specified by name a whole list of people that had won it and said they hadn't.
    Not that interesting I know sorry, but it kinda shook my faith in the AI a bit that it could get something so easily verifiable wrong.
    (and it had nothing to do with the 2021 knowledge cut-off point either, I checked)

    So, arguably fun fact: there are two types of mange a dog can get. One is the contagious sarcoptic mange (aka scabies), caused by the parasitic mite Sarcoptes scabiei. The other is demodectic mange, non-contagious, caused by Demodex canis -- a cousin to the 'eyelash spiders'. I heard an anecdote once about a veterinary course on parasites and diseases, the prof was going over the types of mites, and pulled an eyelash to see if they could find a demodex mite under the microscope. Biology is wild.

    Some added horror about Demodex (follicle mites):
    A clogged sebum gland will absolutely let them breed out of control. Should that happen, you may start to notice an unusual amount of particularly opaque "eye floaters" in your vision. That would be the little bastards accidentally getting into your eye, and getting stuck, due to the surface tension. Regular "eye floaters" are sometimes the molted exoskeletons of your little friends. That crusty stuff in your eyes when you wake up is partially made of their poop.
    So, yeah, now you know that...
