  • This might just be our favorite overland trial so far. The landscape changes so dramatically and the colors are incredible! So many water crossings that we lost count.

Always love Onion Creek! I've used it a couple of times to help wash off the thick, sticky mud that is on some of trails around Moab. And as you probably know, in the right season you can drive through to State Line - Gateway Rd and then either turn right to head back to Moab or go left and drive to Gateway, CO. Awesome country!

In 2020 I was wandering around in my 2010 AWD V6 RAV4 (stock but with Michelin Defender LTX M/S tires), and coming from the Bull Canyon (dinosaur) Overlook and just followed a dirt road (4005/Hideout Cyn) down from there. There's an AMAZING overlook there at 38.688635, -109.170695, and so I stopped there for a while for pics and then moved on. Later, the trail got tougher and tougher (for the RAV's limited capabilities), and while I had to stop a couple times and scout lines and REALLY just barely creep downhill, especially on that long, steep, downhill section, I made it. Coming down, the only part that was difficult was the uphill climb on the slippery (dry at the time) part right before (after for you guys) that gate at the top. Then the Onion Creek part was fun and with awesome views. So, after "softroading" in the RAV since I bought it new, I picked up a 2024 Colorado ZR2, and on 4/12/24 with 750mi on the ODO, headed to Moab for 3 days of offroading (solo, as always). Having done this route in 2020 in the RAV and now having a ZR2, I thought this was going to be the EASIEST (last) day. Boy was I wrong! I'm definitely a noob to having a vehicle with this kind of capability (and much larger size), and especially after the erosion of the last 4 years (leaving big rock steps exposed), it was a LOT more difficult going uphill. I ended up using the rear locker (stupidly forgetting and leaving it in 4 Auto instead of locking the center diff in 4-Hi) on the long climb and leaving it locked. But, as butt-clenchy as it was for me personally (no place to turn around, had to go for it), the ZR2 climbed it easily and made it over all the other stuff to the top. Thank God there was nobody else on the trail either day. Past that GPS point there were really deep ruts in the mud at the top, probably 8-10" deep. There's no way the RAV would have made it UP the trail this time, and with the erosion of the last 4 years probably wouldn't have made it down either. Nice vid, and it's good to relive that road again by video without whiteknuckling it in my new truck. I feel pretty good that, as such a noob driving alone, I made it with the only trail damage being to my skivvies! If you haven't done it, I suggest going all the way to the top past the (amazing) GPS point and then on to Bull Canyon. An added surprise for me was that as I got close to that Bull Canyon Overlook, there was a short-lived blizzard going on! So, I got to play in snowdrift. Ciao, and maybe I'll see you on the trail someday as I work to get more experience/capability.

I did it all the way to the top (38.688635, -109.170695) and on to the Bull Canyon Overlook (blizzarding!) and then back to 128. I'm a TOTAL noob and the trail up was butt-clenchy for me, but the ZR2 went thru it all like nothing. Spooky when you're new to it and have no idea what the capabilities of your new (1,100mi) vehicle are. But, now I kinda know.

Good 'ol Onion Creek! Up until two years ago I was scared to death of trying to take my Kia Sportage on this road. I figured I'd get stuck in the muck at the first wash crossing, but as I approached the Decision Point as to whether or not to proceed I had to wait for a stream of vehicles to pass as they left the area. So what kind of vehicles were included in this mob.... Well, there was a Hyundai Santa Fe and you guessed it.... a KIA SPORTAGE! Yeehaw! I figured if they could make it so could I... and I did! Looks like Mars!

Onion Creek is awesome, but I wouldn't go past the end into Hideout Canyon (past the gate) in a small SUV as it gets a lot more difficult if you try and make it further, especially if you try and make it to the top (38.688635, -109.170695). I made it DOWN from there in 2020 in my 2010 AWD V6 RAV4, but it wouldn't have made it UP, AND there are giant ruts in the mud past that GPS point towards the Bull Canyon Overlook. I made it fine 4/15/24 but then I was in a '24 Colorado ZR2. There has been a lot of erosion in 4 years exposing rocks/steps in what was a graded road.

@@imagereader_9 Actually, you should have gone until it flattened out in the valley, it was just as scenic only a different type/color of rocks. IT stays spectacular WAY past that bridge. Like I said, just don't go past that gate unless you're REALLY looking for adventure in the Sportage. :)
