As ancient Transylvania struggles into modern times, old myths and superstitions blur with reality. Two American students, Michelle and Lillian, join their Romanian friend Mara in the Carpathian Mountains to study the legends of vampires. While the three innocents explore the mysterious village culture and rituals, a suppressed evil rises again and casts its shadow upon the land. Unknowingly snared in a centuries-old family feud, the girls fall into the clutches of Radu: a diabolical vampire prince whose madness and bloodlust know no bounds. To claim his birthright -- the ancient Bloodstone -- Radu kills his father and hunts his noble half brother Stefan. Dangerous passions erupt into violence as the vampire brothers each become obsessed with Michelle and begin to battle for her immortal soul. Stefan's forbidden love for Michelle endangers her friends, as the jealous Radu plots to make them his undead consorts. With Stefan's help, the girls fight for their lives against Radu and his minions -- the Subspecies -- an army of

Anybody who likes this should watch gothic movies from about 1968-1973, from Cry Of The Banshee to The Rites Of Frankenstein to The Bloody Judge to Blood From The Mummy's Tomb to I, Monster to dozens of others. It did a great job of continuing in that grand tradition rather than going, This is the '90s so I guess I better screw up such-and-such about the tradition.

I own all 4 films. Just rewatched Part 1. It still stands up even today. I feel each film gets better and better. Where is Part 5?. Hope they one day will make it!

Subspecies 4 was the end of Radu and Michelle carried on with the blood stone. I always included The Vampire Journals as part of the Subspecies saga.

I can't believe the trailer did not even mention actor Anders Hove as the vampire Radu because this film series now has a Cult appreciation. Anders Hove is known for his evil villain role on the soap opera General Hospital and h was in the Critters movie where they are on an
abandoned space station with the critters running wild, good B movie too.

I'm happier when I can see a whole series of movies in context and I love horror movies. Vampire movies are interesting but I haven't seen many and I'm really appreciative there's a cult following for movies like this but I could see myself watching this and the others only if I was with other people. But wow I don't want to do it alone. It's so scary.

i wish someone would explain to me why stefan was just wrote out n never returned to and why the original michelle never came back something ill never get I mean i like the michelle used in the other films up to a certain point just wish the original would have did more
