i always thought the monks couldn't alter the memory because they were memories Bill had created herself from looking at the pictures therefore they technically didn't exist
Thank you! So many people trash on this episode because "it was solved by love," even though that's not at all what it is. Bill fought fake memories with her own fake memories, and I think that's a really clever resolution to the story.
@@BlueSparxLPs yeah, although it would actually be a good thing if they were "defeated my love" since they wanted to rule by love and love is what defeated them.

@@TheAppeyes It was first leaked by The Sun after they attended a press screening and broke NDA, so I think the marketing team wanted to take control back by incorporating the reveal into the marketing. Whatever their reasoning, I still think it's terrible that it happened.
@@zh7334, It was a test. The Doctor & Nardole were testing Bill to see if she was not truly under the influence of the Monks. This scenario made the most sense to a companion such as Bill because it was only her first season with the Doctor. If this was a companion who had multiple seasons with the Doctor, such as a Sarah Jane Smith or a Clara Oswald (for example), it would not have worked out in the manner it played out because they would have known the Doctor better than that, and it would have been an insult of the viewers' intelligence.
@@TheTMoney35 yeah, as much as I love it for THOSE REASONS, Bill doesn't know about regeneration, so she'd probably only have the same reaction that Rose had
I think Shane's got a pretty valid point about Missy's potential regeneration actually, cause she is very much teetering on the edge and could go either way. There's also a theory that whenever a Time Lord dies and regenerates, their next personality is a reflection of that death, and is "designed" to be someone who wouldn't have died in that same way if they had been put in the same situation. If we assume that there's any kind of truth to that line of thinking, and Missy ended up sacrificing herself or dying while doing something heroic, then whatever subconscious instinct controls regeneration might kick in and think "Oh, I just died because I was being nice, and it made me vulnerable", and cause her next regeneration to be quite cold and prone to darkness by comparison. Basically, I just want Charles Dance to play the Master and this is all an elaborate headcanon to justify it.
Merry christmas to all early Patreons ! :) And great editing there, adding the "you should kill us all on sight !" moment ! I know this episode is not among the greatest favorite, but you gotta admit Capaldi's entire speech there is chilling and the resolution, even though rushed, is quite neat (though it took me some rewatches to fully appreciate it).
This is a decent finale to a decent arc imo , The ending however does feel rushed though. The confrontation scene between Bill and The Doctor was well done and the fake regeneration is such a great troll lol. Bill has been just ok for me but Pearl Mackie has done well in the role and this was her episode to shine !!.
I gotta agree with you here. Pearl Mackie is great, I just felt like the writing didn’t give her much of a chance to show her talent throughout the season. Idk, her character never felt fully fleshed out to me despite having an interesting end to her story.
It actually happened because Moffat's mother died and he was too affected to edit this story (which is why the last episode was good but kinda shoddy). So it's really just shit luck
I think I saw something at 1:11 and I was quite scared but now I do not remember what and when I look back at it I seem to forget again. Also I have some weird black lines on my arm.
Honestly, I think this conclusion to the Monks storyline could have worked fine if they just made it all seem a bit more challenging or consequential. The actual method of beating them is fine, but the whole thing just boils down to a not-particularly-difficult infiltration of their pyramid, where only like 2 of them were guarding, and then they just kinda go "Aight, boutta head out" once Bill does her thingy. I'm honestly not sure they even needed all those resistance fighters, probably could've found a way past the monks even on their own. Also I feel like they needed to do a better job explaining why they had no other option except for Bill to plug herself into the Monk mainframe. I mean, they could have at least tried, like, shooting the central Monk sending out all the signals? Or like the crew said, just try taking Bill off-world or into the past with the TARDIS or something
Agreed. This series is where I think things started to go off the rails. I think the writers started running out of good ideas. I like Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, but they kept taking him in weird directions. The modern revival of Dr. Who made a point of making the companions important. The Doctor Donna, The Impossible Girl, and nevermind the Bad Wolf (Rose Tyler). But for some reason this attempt to make Bill important felt cheap. Maybe it was too soon after losing probably the longest running and most important companion (with the possible exception of Rose), Clara, to throw someone into the mix that is also crucial to saving the world? In my estimation, the point of the Doctor is that he makes you better than you were until, at some point, you are so great that his interest in you was justified. Maybe Bill could get there someday, but having it be her first big outing feels a little like cheating. She still feels like she is still getting her legs. This might have been better in a second series with Bill, after she is wiser. But alas, we never got that.
Wish they'd shown their reaction to "What are the Monks going to do? " "What oppressors always do when they realize who's really in power. They run." That line makes it worth any low points of an otherwise good arc. IMHO.
Notice how the people's overalls in the world ruled by the Watchers is strikingly similar to those worn by lower Party members in the movie "1984". Creepy reference.
plus Bill was the lynchpin, if that transmitting monk had killed her then the monks would have lost anyway, only thing the monk could have done was overpower her until backup for the monks had arrived, though the show was never clear how many monks were about, they definitely seemed few in numbers
After all that build up and the fascinating, interesting, somewhat original concepts with the Monks in the previous two episodes… this was a major letdown for me. It’s just a generic “Aliens have conquered earth” situation and the resolution is both pat and yet another “love conquers all” thing. It’s trite and disappointing after the excellent last two episodes. I'm glad there are people who enjoyed this and I wish I was the same, but this was a shear disappointment.
The solution wasn't love. The solution was Bill using fake memories to fight the Monk's fake narrative. Bill's memories of her mom aren't real, so the Monks couldn't change them. This has absolutely nothing to do with the idea of love and it's not even directly related to Bill's mother. Theoretically, any set of fake memories a person is attached to would have worked. Personally, I think it was really clever.
Nah, the Valeyard was a stupid idea, I always thought. The Doctor regenerates and just suddenly becomes evil? One of those few things back in Classic Who where they didn't really think about how the idea would actually work, they just thought it would be a twist nobody would suspect.
Probably the most out of character the Doctor has ever been. "Bill, you tried to kill me in cold blood with next to no provocation or hesitation. I am so proud of you"
I love capaldi’s doctor but I found this set of episodes just old and tired. It’s all variations of what we’d seen before. Lather rinse repeat. I was bored with most of this season (though I loved, despite its flaws, the upcoming Christmas special). The rest just seemed tired
